Tech Chest.

I have scourged the galaxy looking for tech. I've been to around 5 co-ords today that had tech chests, and everytime I opened them, I got a Pulse jump. This is the 5th time I'm going through this and the odds (if that's how tech works) Of this horrible event are astronomical.

    So,

Can someone tell me what in the world is going on?

World with a lab containing a tech. I've gotten the bubble one and so has a friend so try this one out. Report back to me if you find anything. Travel left btw and the chest MIGHT be around the underground lab, not inside it.

RNG my friend. Each world may be same but may not have the same items.

So I think the real question here is this: When does the game set the contents of a chest? At world gen? When in range? On first opening?
I'll be honest after five failed attempts I'd hit ctrl-alt-del like it owed me money to get another shot at better loot.

When you travel the planet it starts the generation of the planet.

It's not so much the random generation, it's if it's truly random how did I get 5 pulse jump chips when I randomly went to and from different tech chests?
The odds if it's truely random are absolutely stupidly against getting 5 of the same tech in a row.

So I guess what in the game decides it's going to put X chip in the chest instead of Y or any of the others. Let alone whats the mechanic that allows the game to choose 5 of the same chip in a row.

I didn't say that each chest would be different. I merely stated that the planet you went to, even if its the same one from someone posting the coord, it has a chance of having a different item in it. And that each planet that would have a tech chess has the same chance to have said item. Sadly.

Where are you looking? Known coordinates, random dungeons?

See, here's the thing. True randomness has no pattern. We humans reaaaaally like to see patterns whenever possible. As such, it's hard for us to comprehend something that is truly random.

Take for example an ideal coin flip, where there are even 50/50 odds. It would seem suspicious and unfair to us if the coin came up tails 5 times in a row, since that only has a ~3.125% chance of happening. However, every result after 5 coin flips has that same probability of having occurred (if you count H T H T H differently than H H H T T).

In other words, just because it seems suspicious and unfair that you got that same result to the point of severe unlikelihood, that doesn't mean that the formula isn't actually random (or effectively random as the case may be, since computers can never be truly random)

What is this called again, the gambler's fallacy? Would have to look it up to check.

Exactly. The Gambler's Fallacy as applied to the coin toss would be "The coin has come up tails 5 times in a row, it has to come up heads this next time!" even though that next coin flip still has the same 50/50 odds. As applied to the situation here "I've gotten the same tech four times in a row! it can't possibly come up a fifth time!"

lol Only five, before the wipe I went opening over 20 tech chest. I either got the pulse jump or random crap.

although some of the above info is correct, some is not. this situation , viewed through the laws of probability, seem very unlikely. first this is not a coin flip, there are far more possible outcomes than heads and tails, (yes i get it was used as a reference, and i am doing so to further my point) there are multiple possible outcomes for a tech chest, as there are multiple techs available, i know of at least 4-5 myself, and im sure there are a couple i haven't seen yet. so getting 5 of the same item from 5 straight chests breaks the laws of probability, and is somewhere along the lines of 1 in billions, chance of happening, which leads to the concept that the rng is either weighted towards certain items, or simply and more likely broken at this time. i myself have gotten 3 of the dash techs in a row, leading me to believe as does the OP that something is wrong with the rng on these tech chests. trying to state the fallacies, and saying"oh its just bad luck" is not the right approach here, something needs to be looked at, something needs to be changed, so that it works properly. unless of course it IS working properly, and it is NOT random as to whats in a tech chest. which would be the case , if the rng rolls were weighted to give a greater likelihood of certain items dropping more often than others.(which is how it appears to be atm.),

Exactly...There was a bug if you literally opened 5 tech chests and every one had a pulse jump. The odds of that are astronomical.

Tech chests dont even neccesarily have to have a tech in them... so take the chance that a tech chest contains a pulse jump then raise that to the 5th power. Thats the chance it would happen 5 times in a row.

So wait, is the RNG biased towards Pulse Jump since the OP got it 5 times in a row, or Dash since you got it 3 times in a row?

Or is it possible that the RNG is fine and both of you got unlucky in your own ways?

  16. Bertshet

    Bertshet Pangalactic Porcupine

I would say that luck is not with either of them in the case.

They are saying there was probably a bug... not that the RNG is weighted towards a certain item or another. Is it that hard to understand?

OK then, so is the bug "Pulse Jump is showing up more often than it's supposed to." or is it "Dash is showing up more often than it's supposed to"?
