TB recorded some Starbound

Soo there has been a discussion about if famous youtubers will get Starbound sooner now I don't know if Total Biscuit is the only one but at least he received Starbound sooner. But hey, it's like 2 - 3 days before the Beta release so it's not a big deal is it?
It's going to be some sillyness with Jesse Cox if I'd have to guess.

It's pretty standard protocol for press to get things like betas to make first impression type videos. Not a big deal to me.

 

TBH I don't need press telling me what is good and what isn't. I'll play the beta myself in 2 days and form my own opinion. I'm keeping expectations low, this is a very limited beta and is going to be very buggy.

This is great for the people that aren't aware of the game/haven't preordered yet though. Assuming he likes it.

I'm curious as to what problems they're running into. The streams last night ran flawlessly, save for one unexplained crash.

 

Well I'd be interested too actually. Who knows, it's always different when dev is playing the game and when anyone else is playing. "just the usual regular beta stuff" doesn't tell us so much

 

Agreed. I watched a good chunk of that and it seemed fairly solid.

 

I hope he and Jesse call the series Deep Space Mine.

 

When dev's are making something, it's usually pretty much ONLY optimized for the dev's computer. That's why public beta tests are so important.

Oh poor server stability! This beta will be painful for server owners xD

 

Part of the problem is that since it's so open-ended, you can make any part of the game last...well, forever. So although Leth and King spend many hours playing, this is only the very earliest portion of the game. Once they reached Beta Sector last time, there were TONS of unfinished items, weapons, etc.

Also, the release is timed by Steam - and wouldn't you know it, they're just about to wrap up a big sale... Which is a good choice, as Starbound would get a lot less love if it came to Steam while the front page was filled with $50 games discounted to five bucks.

 

Hopefully, with the early testers' help, the devs can get some server/crashing bugs sorted out within a week, if not before Wednesday.

 

Of course, on Friday, they'll probably add about a dozen other bugs which can crash the server, but that's part of the fun of Beta testing!

 

There'll also probably be people that are mod-fixing bugs too. Think unofficial Skyrim patch-style.

 

Bah! You can keep your bug-fixing mods! I have to get to work in Paint.net drawing (and painstakingly animating) pixellated wangs onto all of the character sprites!

But more seriously, I actually wonder if there might be problems caused in bug reporting by the ease of mod-ability. For example, the FIRST thing I do (maybe even before I run the game) will be to enable random monsters to damage and destroy player-created blocks. I wonder if this interaction will create new bugs not seen in other games? But honestly, I can also see this being part of the plan - if you want mod support to be one of your priorities, you're going to have to make sure that modding can't just break the game willy-nilly.

And if we need anything on the level of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch (or more accurately Patches, since there were 3 when I stopped modding Skyrim), shoot me now!

 

Most likely, yes, seeing as how this is early Beta.... Editing stuff probably will break stuff. I mean, is there even a mechanic for monsters destroying blocks? If not, there will have to be a mod made for it, and that mod will probably break during EVERY update, so it might not be even worth it to try and mod the game this early in...

Absolutely! Tiy discussed it at length. It was dummied out because some people really hated it, but he even commented on how extraordinarily easy it would be to add back in!

Honestly, having looked at the config files in Tiy's earlier videos, it looks like it'll simply be a matter of adding the "can damage blocks" flag to the various monster attacks - if it's even gone and not merely commented out.
