This has probably been said before but i don't really like the idea of "unlocking" pets. it seems like a fake experience.
i would love to see animals that when you first meet them they are neutral or even HOSTILE but once you have given them say... a bone (there would be more specific things) they would follow you around.the more you satisfy them the more loyal they become (eg. 1 bone = follow, 2 bones = fight for you and so on) , you could give them a collar, and maybe even equipment..
    please leave your opinion

Cool idea, perhaps it could be measured in trust? Like it might have a trust bar, and for different animals or monsters it would need different amounts of trust. For example deer would be rather easy to tame as they are perhaps more docile but for let's say a dragon(just an idea, not in the game as far as I know) would be a lot harder.
    Once again cool idea :)

As far as I know there hasn't been any mention of unlocking pets. They're going to use some kind of capture system like you suggested, although whether it will just be weakening the enemy and using an item on them, or feeding them items is still unknown. I imagine it's more likely the be the former seeing as it would be kind of hard to feed items to hostile enemies. Either way you will have to go out and find the enemy to use them as a pet, they won't just appear at your base as you upgrade the ship or anything.

Perhaps we could have to beat them up THEN feed them?
