This is my hat for the Hat Contest. It is more of a helmet, and the story helps explain the HUD for Starbound. This helmet was used about 20 years before the events of Starbound. Used by the Intergalactic Law Enforcement, SWAT teams used this helmet as standard issue armor. It came in 3 colors. Blue, for Blue squad members, Green, for Green squad members, and Red, for squad Captains. The on-screen HUD shown on the visor told the user many things, from vital signs and auxiliary power, to equipped items, more on that later. The spikes on the top were not just for looks. A popular tactic during close quarters combat was to headbutt your enemy, stabbing them with all 4 blades, causing sever damage. Some SWAT members sometimes dropped the helmet inside of a small hole to create a spike pit trap. However, 6 years later, Laser eye surgery took over, allowing on-screen HUDS to be burned directly onto a person's eye, making external monitoring screens obsolete. FULL BACK-STORY: Yay I finally got off my lazy @$$ and finished the back story . YEAR 2140 Intergalactic terrorist attacks are at an all time high as normal citizens struggle to cope with the devastation. 26 successful bombing attacks have put the galaxy on high alert as the government struggles to find a solution. > [PRIVATE MESSAGE] > [ENCRYPTION VER 1.33_02 SET] > Time 0930 3/22/2140 Military Calendar > From: Cpt. We have been approved for increased funding but we > need new armor ASAP. Our men are dropping like flies and if we don't hurry our asses up...well, > we are already behind, and I don't need to tell you what is going to happen if THEY win. > > Make it happen. > > [END MESSAGE] > Archived under TEMP.12.0.3.7_3 [Message will be removed after 7 days if not moved to permanent archive] After two years of development, the T.A.V ver 1.0 was created by the engineers. All their hard work and testing paid off as their new invention was brought to the field, and it showed. After just 8 months from the first deployment of the helmet, Command Base ordered an upgrade. Another 7 months later came the T.A.V ver 2.0 The new T.A.V came with thermal emitters inside the helmet, making the blades red hot at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. It was impressive, at least, until a defect caused the actual whole helmet to heat up and leave burn marks on the user's head. So 2.0 was recalled, and they went back to 1.6_02, which was the latest before 2.0. Update Log (From Document tavLOG.txt): 1.0 -Initial release, sporting three blades. 1.1 -Added the "hook" design around the side of the user, allowing 360 degree protection. 1.2 -Added a single layer shield emitter to protect the glass from shattering, make the HUD and overall vision distorted. 1.2_01 -Fixed material detection bug that was causing the bottom portion of the helmet to not be shielded. 1.3 -Added a 4th spike. -Shield now recharges. 1.4 -Spikes were lengthened by 2 inches. -Better paint job so it does not fade as much. 1.5 -Add 5th spike to the back. 1.6 -Removed 5th spike on back due to weight. 1.6_01 -In compliance with military ordinance 88.5, a hole has opened up in the back to allow female soldiers to hang their hair loose if they pleased. 1.6 02 -Final Release -HUD icons updated to look more "polished" -Minor fixes in appearance and size to comply with newly ordered military ordinances. OTHER NOTES: Old versions are to be destroyed as to prevent equipment theft in the hands of enemy forces. Now rare, people hold onto it as collector's items, a piece of history, they are worth a LOT if you get your hands on one. Version 1.6_02 is the only one they can find, due to old versions (including the defective 2.0 version) being destroyed and forgotten. The onscreen HUD - It is what your character sees! The HUD you see in the dev Footage is what the user sees themselves in the corresponding locations. Vitals and Auxiliary - (I'll use my custom one as an example) On the top right, this little animated image allows you to see your vitals and auxiliary power at a glance. Vitals are red, amount of auxiliary power is green. The helmet, being universal, can monitor any kind of battery or energy storage unit. Quickbar - The quickbar you have seen in all the footage and livestream. This helmet connects to the user's storage device, being universal, it can connect to almost any kind of storage, allowing lightning fast swapping of items between hands. The toggle-able inventory display also allows you to shuffle through the contents of your pack that are NOT currently equipped. Pixels - Since Pixels were a very common use for currency throughout the entire universe, and since SWAT members enjoyed looting their enemies cash stashes, on the top right is how many pixels are currently stored in the user's storage unit. Well, that is the story. Hope you like the pixel art, I did my best. I am open to constructive criticism and suggestions, so type away! Again, good look to everyone who is entering and may the best hat win! EDIT: Here is a 1:1 scale model: EDIT 2: No, you CAN NOT headbutt people with this helmet. That was just part of the story, NOT a feature. Just to clear up some confusion. EDIT 3: Here is your complementary cookie . Thank you for shopping at Scam Co. Supermarket. We hope to see you again!
I need some opinions on the back story. After a little while looking it at it, it seems.....rushed. I don't know Is there enough detail? Because I have a little OCD about this stuff and my consciousness is killing me.
