OK I was wondering. In the FAQ is says they are trying to get it to where old computers can use Starbound. I was wondering; How old can the computer be? I have an old Windows 2000 Dell that was recently upgraded to Windows XP professional and only has 512MB of memory and can run DirectX 7 without problem. Would this be too old or just at the Bar? It is 12 years old by the way and has a RAM capacity of 512MBs
Well the old computer they were referring to was a macbook, 4GB's of ram... I only have 0.99GB But to be honest I don't know fuck all about computers... So I'd say your either fucked or you're just about right...
It's probably playable IF they support DirectX 7, but I doubt it'll be enjoyable. I'd suggest upgrading; today's smart phones are faster than that.
This game apparently has been optimized to run on a single core processor, with 1 GB of RAM. Not too sure about the video card, it shouldn't be much since lighting will be handled by the game in itself. Anyway, I think it will "run". But I doubt you will get more than 20 FPS. Not sure if that will be a problem, but as stated above, I would recommend upgrading.
I think you should upgrade. Pretty much anything relatively new will run the game well, even with integrated graphics.
Thanks! I have been told either to get a new Motherboard or just upgrade. and as of Direct X it runs 8 and 9 but the textures are just weird. Thanks for all the help!
I bet you can run it..but err..well the ...windows 2000..im not sure bro But well when you take how much of textures are loaded at once, and chunks, its not really next gen crysis 7 hardcore burnoff,The game is beauty, with lot of possibilites,i dont think it will take lot of system, since it has even better system then terraria...
Afaik we can't talk about what the game is optimized for because as of now (or as of the time when they talked about system reqs) it isn't/wasn't optimized at all. While it's very light I wouldn't rely on anything running on Windows 2000, just because it's so old and unsupported.
The devs have managed to get the game to work with old computers... I wouldn't worry. It's not like you're playing Crysis. (And you can't get that to work on the lowest settings ;..; )
We require Windows XP SP3 or better, and OpenGL 2.0, when we do DirectX support (which is soonish) I think we're going to target 9c. Your graphics card might not be able to handle GL 2.0 or DX9c, double check. I haven't really had a chance to test SB in memory limited situations, generally, if you're running a server, you keep the areas around you in memory, as much as your computer can handle up to a point. I have 16GB of RAM and memory usage for the process reads at 2.6% with a world loaded. Which is 426MB. I'll have to scrounge up an older computer and see how it handles 512MB and 256MB of memory at some point before release to see if the engine handles low memory situations. Beyond that, the game uses lots of threading, it sounds like you have a single core processor. We're actively working to bring performance to an acceptable level for single core boxes, but there's only so much that can be done, right? Because to remove loooooooong planet generating load times we load the planet dynamically as you run through it. Dunno, we test every so often to make sure it works with Tiy's Macbook Air. But I don't personally have access to a low spec computer right now. It might be useful for me to pick one up at a pawn shop as soon as I get some extra cash, but I'm certain that once the beta launches we'll get lots and lots of reports regarding older hardware, so it's not a pressing concern. Make it work, then make it fast.
Thanks! My Graphics card can handle Directx 9c (The computer i talked about has something wrong with it's driver) As for Open GL i am pretty Sure it is 2.0. I Think it is astounding that you can get it down to 426Mb because most games are not playable or enjoyable with low Memory like that (Even in the low GB range). Again Thanks for the feed back!
