Hey, I've just been buzzing with ideas in my mind since I got Starbound on Steam a few days ago, and I just want to share one of my bigger ones with everyone right now and maybe eventually see it possibly become something in game. (As it completely fits the game in my opinion :p)

Something I'd enjoy seeing personally, would be an added computer console, or something similar to the cockpit, somewhere right in front of your pilot seat seems appropriate. What you can use this for is to personally add notes, and gather your own data, and keep them on record on this console.

Let's say.. I drop down to a planet in Alpha superion 7985 (made up) As it is right now, with lack of a favourites/bookmarked planet option this would be helpful as well. Let's say, as I land down on one of these planets I find that it is overabundant in certain ores. I mine some ore, I explore a little and discover an entire settlement of people, but during my exploration, I come to find that this planet has very little to offer in lumber/trees. Finished my journey, I beam back up to my ship, open my Ship console and begin to type in a new log of my discoveries, the star coordinates, I can detail for myself what this planet lacks, what it has plenty of, and can record any interesting finds I may have found while planetside. I then save that log, and begin flight to another planet with this new found information recorded, and ready to be read again whenever I decide I wish to return to the planet of ores and people, or just to read up on my past adventures.

It could have plenty of uses really. People can record their journey recording helpful information they can look back on if need be, and it could even please an RP crowd of people who'd like to keep some sort of Space diary :p

What does everyone else thing of something like this being implemented?

(Not sure if this belongs in mechanics, but it sort of sounds like a gameplay mechanic to me so apologies if I'm wrong,)

    +1

    This is yes.

Great idea, even though coordinate bookmarks are planned I'd still love to see this.

Yeah, I know they are planned, I just figured If this were a thing already this would be an easy alternative to pseudo bookmarking your planets by just leaving yourself a note on your console about a planets coordinates. :p

Even with bookmarking your favourite planets being a planned feature, I still very much see the fun and benefit to being able to write yourself your own personal notes about ...whatever you want really, with the more practical reason being for recording notes based on your explorations :p

    Just bumping.

I'd like to see what more people think of this idea :)

    Sure, why not?

IF you wanted, you could record notes like that :p That's what my one point about pleasing RPers a bit was about, some people could use it to record useful notes, and those who want to can use it to record their adventures and keep a sort of captain's log lol

I'm not done hearing people's thoughts, but these boards move fast so bumping once again :)

Yes I would love this. I've spawned on so many planets with certain creatures I want to capture, or facilities I want to claim, or creepy oddities like a group of stranded campers gone savage. I would love to mark that planet in an organized journal, then be able to write my own summary of the planet.

Maybe if this gets enough attention it could be something we'll see :D

I would like to see this built into the current navigational console

Yeah either built into it, or positioned right in front of it were what I was mostly thinking for it. I think it's something that belongs in the cockpit either way :p

I would like it if you could make notes on the starmap(even renaming planets). Sort of like how you could in old fantasy games, but done in a more sci-fantasy sort of way. Kind of like a special bookmark that you can leave notes and comments on it. There's a whole lot more functionality they could add just to the nav console, especially since space on the ship is already limited.

On a similar subject, I think it would be really cool to scan planets you visit in the later stages of the game. (% mineral readouts, foliage, liquids, and other resource reports) But I should probably expand more on that later.

This is a good idea, i posted an idea about being able to place custom markers on your map, and also a suggestion about being able to backtrack to past planets. But this idea has a lot of more "spirit" to it. Id really like to see this ingame.

Captain's log. Planet Alpha Superion 7985. Beamed down to planet surface and got attacked by some Po monster in a sewer. Do not wish to repeat the experience.

I'd love to see this type of thing connected server-side. So the star map becomes a wiki propagated with notes by everyone on the server. Maybe have a separate section with notes on the planet that you want to keep to yourself though, in case you like making secret bases and whatnot. Potentially open the wiki to the web so everyone can share certain info regardless of what server they play on, reducing the need for the dedicated coordinate sites that have been cropping up. In that case it might be good to include an icon by each planet noting what type of info is available
    ex:
    Info from web,
Info from server/whether or not someone on your server beat you there,
Personal info/whether or not YOU have been there.

You don't feel that that sort of defeats the point of exploration and recording your own discoveries on the planets you visit?

I personally think if it were like that it would cut into an individuals personal sense of discovery when exploring planets and recording their own notes, if someone has already been there :p

Completely agree. Would add so much roleplaying, and exploration value to this game.
Planets would no longer be random orbs I walked on 10 minutes ago and forgot about when I moved on. Would make the universe feel a bit more real and memorable.
