[Suggestion] Allow conversion of wood to charcoal

As a thought - given the number of people who are raging now that wood doesn't fuel starships any more, how about putting in an item like a charcoal burner that allows you to convert unrefined wood > charcoal (at a rate of say, 3:1).

Allow players to fuel starships with either coal at 1:2 or charcoal at 1:1.

Well I agree, use up a lot of wood to make charcoal. balanced yet still a renewable source of fuel.

 

I don't really see why it's such a big deal that you can't use wood any more. Coal isn't all that hard to find at all, and it's much more efficient. Wood was never really that good of a source in the first place.

 

Wood is a renewable source however - Or it will be as soon as trees grow.

 

Even lazy recolouring would work

I don't mind that wood is no longer a fuel now, I never had to use it, I had so much coal it was not even funny. But I guess for people that want to use wood as a fuel source it's a possibility.

 

Adding in the option of crafting an item like a charcoal burner also provides a different startup choice for new characters.

Yeah... Most topics are about complaints rather than constructive feedback or ideas...

It's the nature of "general discussion". You have other forums that might as well be labeled "constructive and useful posts" and then you have general discussion which tends to collect all the rubbish that doesn't belong anywhere.

 

I have cross-posted this to the suggestions forum; was yours the post about smelting wood into coal?

 

Yup. Oddly enough, the wood flashes in the smelter if you try to use it, unlike most items which do nothing. Makes you wonder if they had that feature planned already and it's just partially disabled or somthing.

 

I also tried smelting wood and of course got no result.

I think the conversion rate needs to be such that actually using coal is better, but you can use wood if you're unlucky and not finding a lot of coal.

I'm also assuming that there are fuels later on that negate the need for coal entirely (fuel blocks or whatever).

 

I like it. Wood is too efficient the old way but this allows you to fractionize it to weaken its efficiency.
