Dear Chucklefish, Have you ever played or heard about the game Waking Mars? It was a cool concept, but was way too short to be satisfying. I was hoping we might be able to see something implemented post-release where we could have farming and agriculture on land like we do here on earth, but also have some kind of farming in subterranean vents, or even on hostile planets. We should also have geothermal vent farming on ocean floors, especially on planets with higher-than-average vulcanism. Moreover, you could tie the value of the farming products to the threat-level of the planet-type required to grow and harvest them. I.e. Plants grown on inhospitable worlds would require a higher level of tech, and would therefore be worth more and would presumably have a greater variety of uses in potions, recipes, and other craftables. It is my opinion that this suggestion would add a HIGH degree of interactivity with the environment. And it would also be deeply gratifying to crafters.

There was this one book I read, Pendragon or somesuch. There were giant floating cities that had underwater farms underneath them that produced a fruit they used for practically everything from their food to the plastics. (correct me if I'm wrong my memory isn't the best)
woudlnt this just be like an underground house with a farm inside? or do you mean like planting subterrean plants in the sea and harvesting them via diving in and harvesting?
Yes, I should elaborate I suppose. What I mean is an entirely different set of plants that would only grow in subterranean environments. And then another set that would only grow in aquatic environments. Perhaps "sushi" is an in-game recipe...where would the nori (seaweed) come from to wrap it? From the nifty-spifty Hylotl Galactic Dominion Kelp Farm (TM), of course! I don't know what plants to have grown. I would be happy to come up with some, but I don't want to put a ton of effort into coming up with in-depth ideas for harvestable crops until I'm certain it's something most of the gaming community would enjoy and use. There could also be crops that only grow on lava planets, for example...making them therefore a royal pain in the butt to grow and harvest due to the heightened threat-level. As such, the ingredients from these plants would be used in high-powered consumables like end-game potions, stat-boosting food items, etc.
love the idea, should definately be included, i was thinking maybe on a gas giant you could even have floating plants, which you would have to tie to a platform or house or something like balloons
Floating plants work in the aquatic idea too since there are actual seaweeds that do this (they have specialized tissue that forms an air-tight pocket and then the plant pumps some of it's metabolic by-products into the pocket, filling it with gas that is more buoyant than water, resulting in flotation). But yes, definitely it would be nifty to see plants floating in mid-air. I like the cut of your jib, sir.
The Hylotl Galactic Command thanks you for your contribution to our economic utopia, and in light of your efforts, bagpipe music will be incorporated into our repertoire at the soonest possible availability.
Yea, it was Pendragon, to be specific, Pendragon, City of Faar (or was it Farr?) I loved that book, and would love to see things from it implemented.
Ok, so here are some different plants that could be grown aquatically: 1.) kelp 2.) nori 3.) dulse 4.) lilly pads (purely decorative for their flowers...we need some beauty in this game, not just stuff that functions...although you could use lilly pads as an ingredient for a rockin' lilly pad hat...it would look faaaaaaaaaaabulous on Florans...though they kinda already look fab with the flowers and all that Miles Davis jazz...) 5.) an armored plant...a plant with a particularly thick, leathery husk that could be used to offer a baseline of protection for Salaman-made structures 6.) some form of noxious plants that could be used to craft poisons (if there is such a system in the game) 7.) maybe a type of carnivorous plant that could do some minor (or major damage if it is really developed) to enemies. I'm just thinking at some point in the game it's going to be extremely obnoxious not to be able to have a safe haven in the game. If every doggone blood moon I'm going to have zombies kicking my door in, I'm going to build something that is going to deal with them so I don't have to put up with that noise! Anyone have other ideas for aquatic plants? I'm not the best at coming up with the details of new ideas, but I think I get general ideas pretty well.
