For those of you who just started playing the nightlies, there was formerly a readout on the HUD stating what the planet's sub-biome is. (And yes, I did check to make sure it actually had a sub-biome.) So... What's the deal here? Is it a bug? Temporarily disabled for tweaking? Scratched completely?

It seems this is the new behavior of the starmap. Perhaps telling you the sub-biome ahead of time takes some of the fun out of exploring planets. :)

I could be mistaken on this, but I seem to recall that the starter Forest planets didn't have a significant sub-biome. Does the starmap show a sub-biome for any planet in a random system?

The garden starter planets, far as I know, have no sub-biomes; Forests do, usually either "spring" or (as I saw on the surface of the featured planet) Mushroom. Also, I've checked several planets of every type; no sub-biomes displayed on any of them.

I'm going to go ahead and close this out as an intentional change. The starmap now looks like this (no more biome/sub-biome listings):
