Study vs. Starbound

    Hey everyone,

I am currently rushing my studies in IT Network Engineering so that I can put some more time into the Starbound beta stage 1.
Luckily I had already finished almost everything for the year before the beta release date was announced. I still need to study
for my CCNA certification, but that is manageable as I have a few months before my scheduled exam.

So my question to everyone is:
Are any of you in a similar situation to me?
Have you rushed your studies to prepare for the Starbound beta?
Are you a good student and plan to put off Starbound to focus on your studies?
    Or are you planning
to put off your studies as Starbound seems too good to pass up?

A secondary question for those who do not study:
Are you planning to take time off work to play the Starbound beta stage 1 as soon as it is released?

Don't rush/half ass your school work over a game. When it comes to school you have 1 chance to get it right otherwise that's it.

Starbound isn't going anywhere any time soon, it will be there when you leave to study and will still be there when you come back to play it.

And when it comes to IT work, missing anything can be pretty detrimental in the long run.

  3. Study is sort a less evil.

Now have the work all day, and get time to it, taking care of 2 old persons + 2 hyperactive dogs + noisy neighbors and get to play it :cautious:

I'm not able to focus on the game if I know I've skipped out on work and projects to play. This goes double for college, so I usually get all that junk done before any releases I'm looking forward. No point in screwing myself out of classes I'm paying for, heh.

Considering i have finals the week of beta.. I'm just going to have to do my homework prepare and then ill just play a little bit of starbound at night to relax.. then repeat for the next day.. 2 more weeks of school! then starbound 24/7!!

    - You can always try again with school, at least in Australia.

    - As for rushing study, I always get top marks on my work. I am just doing all the work NOW instead of over the next 2 weeks.

    - Most of the networking concepts that I have been studying require a foundation knowledge to build upon. I agree that if you miss
certain topics or do not fully understand them you will have a hard time learning the more advanced topics. Luckily I am very determined
to succeed as I have a rather expensive wife :giggle:

Glad to hear you are managing it well :)

Why would anyone sacrifice a game over something so important?

I think that I'll probably spend a good amount of time studying and reinforcing my knowledge.

Sure, I've been waiting for Starbound for quite a while, but my grades are still very important to me.

If you are asking this question seriously, you honestly do not have your priorities in order, STUDY THEN PLAY.

Games can be played at anytime, RL>GAME.

I don't have college just a job. As itstands this job has me on call 24/7 so I can't really "take time off" so to speak. My schedule shifts are on the weekend, so I should get a day or two in Starbound before I have to go to work which is nice. :) With it being winter I'll be called n more frequently though, so we'll see. I can't afford to tak time off of work right now, as I'm covering a friend who's on hard times.

University ended a few weeks ago for me, so I'm on holidays until next year. I don't have any studies at the moment, and no employment either (though I might volunteer somewhere to keep myself occupied).

Your academic success, and therefore your real-life success, should never be in question or bargained with due to some video game, no matter how "amazing" it is. I feel school should always be the priority, as it produces real-life results unlike entertainment generally does.

Well, I'm not studying for it, but I suppose I'm technically a network engineer...when I was studying though I didn't put it off for anything...then again I was never really in a situation where I wanted to do something so bad that I had to organize my time. I guess I'm not much help.

I agree completely hence why I am getting all my study done now instead of when there is a distraction :)

So are you implying that my priorities are not in order?
Did I write somewhere that I was skipping my study or putting it off?
I apologize if this sounds defensive, but frankly it is.

This is a simple question that implies nothing about myself. It is a way for me to find out how other
people in a similar situation to myself are handling it. I am fortunate enough to already be a few weeks
ahead in my studies. I am putting in the hard work now before beta is released so I can reward myself
    with some personal gaming time.

Not sure, but I know it happens.
Perhaps some people just find it all to much and need a break.

You won't benefit in a game from not studying but you will benefit in studying by putting off a game. I'm coming to the end of my semester is grad school. I have 3 big tests over 6 days not long after the 4th. I'm gonna try itnout but honestly I won't be able to spend much time on it until agter the semester is commpletely over. And on top of it the game is missing a lot of stuff. Youre better off studying and putting more time in once more features are available.

Edit: typos from using my cellphone with fat fingers

No. The game will always be there, and as excited as I am to be able to play it, it would be foolish to put something that can be done at anytime, and doesn't offer anything but temporary enjoyment, ahead of something that needs to be done and actually matters even after you're done with it.

A good game is good, but it's also still a game.

Starbound releases right in the middle of dead week... so it's the worst timing for me. But I'll probably log in once or twice for breaks because I definitely can't study the entire time.

That's usually what happens. I don't know how my best friends can study and work so long/hard throughout the semester but I get burnt out a lot around midterms/finals and I just need a break. It's better to give in and take a step back from studying than to burn through after burning out.
