I don't quite understand this to be honest, will we still be able to tame the random monsters? I had also assumed that when they were trained they would fight for you. Will we be able to have the original starter pet AND the tamed one with us at the same time? Or maybe the tamed pets don't follow you? I am completely confused. I can't even vote because I don't know how this new (apparently non-combat) pet will affect the monster taming, or if the monster taming thing is still going to be implemented. What had really attracted me from the get go was the monster taming. I imagined you would see a random awesome monster you liked, tame it somehow with the game's mechanics, and once it's tamed have it follow you around and help you fight. Someone PLEASE help me out on this because I am totally confused and I really don't want to read 70 pages of comments. If anything please just make it optional because I don't like the idea of a useless cute thing just following me around for no reason.

it won't do anything to the taming system, it's still in.

Edit: this would just let you start with a pet.

  4. There is little info in Such thing. It will be Possible YES, and it should be expanded to Pets with some Tech, INSTEAD of add a whole new system only for vanity pets, what makes no sense right now. =/

    That's why I voted NO.

No need to be that way about it. Plenty of us who have been checking out the game since the site went up have voted yes because we like the idea. Not because we're ill-informed or less knowledgeable, but because we like the plan.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. Starting pets should NOT have a function like this. If you start off with something that can find ore for you, or light up an area or lead you to a chest, than it totally breaks early game progression. What's the point in having a flashlight if your pet can do the lighting for you? What's the point of exploring every nook and cranny if something you start with just points the way to all the valuables? Especially in a game about exploration and discovery, no less!

If the pets can obtain these abilities later on, that's fine, but otherwise you're giving the player way too much power from the get-go which skews early-game progression. Also, if pets are optional, then you're effectively giving the player who decides they don't want to use the pet a disadvantage over the one who does.

Mind you, it's only an opinion, but I've been trying to consider the ramifications that something like this has on gameplay. Abilities sound cool in theory, but if implemented incorrectly, you could cheapen other elements of the game. I think it's safest to either NOT have pets as a starting asset (something you can perhaps discover later on), or they need to remain function-less early-game in order to preserve the progression of the early stages of exploration.

  7. Okay, then you want a System, over another System, just because something is cute and you want it? Right, still it will make a lot of sense when they add Monster Capture and Taming and if we want to Equip a Pet we need to use another System for Vanity Things as Kitties and Dogs.

    Sigh. :(

I voted for "nah", becouse I just don't want them(except some fish aquarium). I wish for some elevator/lift system in game.

Pets yes. If you've ever played Secret of Evermore... the main character's pet dog could/would sniff out alchemical ingredients. I support a companion pet that just follows you around... but it would also be neat if they have a noncombative perk (like sniffing things out). and of course only if it doesn't delay beta/release.

it might be as easy as adding a little tab and giving it tamed ai, set the ai not to attack and done.

I'd like to start with a pet from the get-go, yeah. Because Mr. Fluffles, Last of the Noble Race of Bunnies is awesome. That you don't get your jollies by having these things is fine, you can ignore the starter pet and go about your business collecting other species for use in combat (and there's nothing wrong with that). Personally, I see a value in the stretch goal (and there is nothing wrong with this either).

I think Ariexe didn't understood this poll was about starter pets (that are just vanity)

I'd say Mollygos really crapped that poll by not explaining what we were voting for

  14. Not quite talking about that. I'm talking about we be able to Capture and Tame Monsters, but if we want that same monster as a Pet we can't because people want a whole new system with Kitties and Doggies on it to be the Pet System. :(

hm? i thought this was just going to add a set of harmless AI to the current pet builds and add some sprites. and we don't really know what the devs have in already. some things we suggest might already be in there.

I can definitely see why people be opposed to having a pet that was just a useless thing that follows you around everywhere you go. Personally, I think it would be rather annoying to be fighting hordes of hideous inhabitants of a tentacle planet, and have a yappy little dog following me around, doing nothing but cluttering up the screen. This would be more the place that I would want the monster that I had tamed and weaponized to be able to suck the life out of my enemies :metroid: to be at my side.

I think that having a non-combat pet that you would keep around on your home world, or your space-ship, or other non-hostile areas might be a nice addition to the game, provided you could interact with the pet in various ways and it wasn't just another trophy item to leave at your house and forget. However, seeing as the developers have planned even to give furniture like chairs a functional purpose, I wouldn't be too worried about this.

if the pet gives some benefits it would be really bad for some us that dont want them.make it cosmetic or something else as a goal would be better i guess.
i think starter pet + tamed monsters are too much stuff following you especially in co-op

Dear Molly, (I hope you read it)

I know this probably fits better in the suggestion section, but let me post here anyway.

Pets would be a great addition to Starbound, but I'm more worried about other features regarding pets. It would stuck to simply have an entity following you with zero further interaction. Example:

    1) Pet "Storage". I imagine we can only go out with one pet at a time. I hope you can add a space where we can leave other pets to sleep.
    2) Behavior. It would be great if pets can behave according to our actions. Examples:
    - If you have a dog and give him meat, he will be happy.
    - If you forget to feed your pet he will quickly be sick, move slower, make sad faces, etc.
    - If you 'accidentely' harm it by a miss fire or bad sword swing, etc, he will lose happiness quickly and will not follow so closely.
    - When pets are happy they follow you very closely, they purr, bark, make all sorts of cute alien noises; they wave their tales, make little jumps and even back-flips just to show you how joyful they are, etc
    - The more time they spend with you, the happier they get.
    - If they are unhappy they may randomly bite and hurt you lightly as well as constantly make angry noises.
    3) Interaction with other objects and entities
    - Pets can pick up distant valuable items for you if they are happy such as money or precious gems. They will go to the object and come back to you. The object will then be automatically added to your inventory.
    - They do not engage in combat. But some may give some power ups, etc. For example: the dog's bark may reduce the enemy defense by 10% because it got scared.
    - Pets may have special abilities that support you like to able to spot nearby enemies, or buried treasures, pick up apples and food from trees, etc.

  19. I hope so. They can't do as some games and MIX everything up, and at the end people will complain it's everything complex and the game needs some core changes to smooth and merge some systems because some wrongfully taken suggestions (that happens a lot).

I Honestly Say this: A Vanity Pet system with some cute things running after us, is not worthy for the Goal Starbound is about to reach.

I like the idea of starter pets, but I wouldn't mind waiting for a bit to tame my own. I think there should be non-combat pets that you can "tame" based on what your character is. If you're on a planet, there could be some creatures that would be drawn to certain races, certain armor types, some that flee from combat, etc. So that if one follows your character long enough, it can imprint on you and accompany you later.

Also, I love the idea of some sort of space combat, but that's just me.
