    I'M AGAINST THIS!
Combat or non-combat, starter pets are a good idea but if there's already a way to catch monsters with or without starter I got a much better idea!

For the love of everything that is holy, extend the pet system if you already got one! Not with starter pets! With pets being upgradable!
Without starter pets people aren't forced to take a pet with them and can still catch monsters if they find a monster they feel is catch-worthy.
Add to the pet system the feature to be able to upgrade pets through evolution forms, upgradable stats, changable attributes or being able to add ailments(like making a pet get poisonous on touch) or make it possible to fusion monsters(into stronger or simply different ones) or being able to breed for monsters that fit the players ideal.

There are so many wonderful ways to make the catching, training and growth of a pet exciting for the players.

    Look at this:
You caught both these and they're both considered Rank 1 Monster by the system
    [IMG] +[IMG]
Now you fusion or breed two rank 1 monster and the generator spits this out
    = [IMG]
While the looks remain the way you want them, generated out of elements from both monsters that you chose,
this is now a rank 2 monster and has therefore one random stat increased by 1. You would then need another rank 2 monster to be able to make one of rank 3.
Players could now catch and combine monsters to their heart's content up to a max. rank of 10 or 20 for a total of 10 or 20 extra stats and still combine their pet to get the perfect look for it.

Just imagine how much time people would spend to hunt and breed/fusion for the perfect monsters they want.

and if I was there to vote, I would have said nay to pets, too cliche unless they are diverse. Aren't there pets of some type already in the game?

this is why this thread exists. The devs want to see if people want this as a stretch goal. and so far majority is winning

I figured as much, but if he can't articulate his points he shouldn't argue.

I would like to see something new. Like the fossils - which adds something unique to the gameplay - and of course it should not delay shipment because of abnormal need to of programming .
I def. NOT want to see a new race, new kind of pets, new monsters or something else.

For example: i would like to see in late game being able to create stargates (after teching up so far, and for example finding very rare ancient blueprints of stargates parts) between planets.
Should be not too much work of programming, and gives you travel comfort in late-end game, which people normally like to have ;)

Not extremely enthusiastic, but I like it. I just request that you add both cute and creepy pets. I don't like pink, and not a huge fan of dogs, although don't dislike them, I like animals in general.

The ability to chose what colors your pet will have would be great. If you made a colorful parrot pet, we'd be able to alter its colors and make it look like a crow or seagull.
Also, NPC's selling pets would be awesome, making it a collectible quest. And please make the pets we gather be possible to keep on the ship or in colonies as NPC's themselves when not follow you around. Whenever I play a game with a pet system, and swap one pet for another, I always imagine the other pet being locked away some place, which is why I never swap pets if I can avoid it.

But by voting no you are false signalling that you don't want pets in the game. They may decide not to put them in at all because of your petty gripe with it being a goal and not just something they put in on their own.

Honestly the poll is already distorted because most people look at it as "do you want pets or do you want nothing" and that's not what it is. We need a poll with 2 options for it to be truly accurate. Also Just reading through this thread last night (I've read at least 50+ pages) there are so many people who want the pets that didn't know about the tamable monsters already in the game that overlap with most of the pros they posted for a pet system.

OH MY [CENSORED] GOD THIS IS BRILLIANT
This makes the randomization in the game even greater! The ability to breed other species together and make another one! you would need like a cryo tube and some machine that would fuse the two together and BAM
    I like that

If we do get pets they need to be more than just an entity that follows you around. There should be furniture such as dog houses, scratching posts, food bowls, etc. We should be able to choose whether or not we want our pet following us around, or just sitting at home in its bed (because I for one would not bring my dog to a planet with acid rain and 50 feet tall monsters). Perhaps drop in a mechanic in which pets get sick (nothing deadly, it just might make them sluggish temporarily), and you can help them with either tech or some kind of herbal medicine. I suppose what I'm getting at is that if we're going to have pets, they should be more like pets from the Sims and less like non-combat pets from WoW.

EDIT: Another kind of goofy idea: Pet's can go to the bathroom. Imagine coming back from a long day excavating a cave, only to be greeted with a little present on your bed. Then allow the really committed pet owners to house train their pets.

Even if I disagree with your main point, I certainly agree that the devs could have organised or laid this out better.

  16. UNDERSTAND please: There is already monster Capture/Taming confirmed for Starbound, what sense does it make Vanity Pets over that? ^^

This is not true, and thinking like this is why a good chunk of people did/will vote Yay. This is a system that can be refined and added post launch, tons of good suggestions on how to improve on it in this thread and we already know they have a massive amount of post launch features they will implement.

Problem with noncombat followers? ;D Most of the things I expected to be in starbound were in the update thread already. So, noncombat pets are a good thing! (RP value and all for me). Hence my earlier suggestion about them being a choice during the character setup / background stuff.

The stretch goals are things to be added for release aren't they? Why not have the stretch goal be adding Combat Pets for release, instead of having it added as post-release update? Then you could have an option of having "Vanity" pets and allow the player to select a premade "Vanity" pet when they select their character.

I was never much into collectible pets. I'd rather have a rare mini-biome, or space zombies, or rare asteroid that has some esoteric purpose. i guess what i'd prefer is a unique encounter that is repeatable but few and far between. but that might be too much code work. I dunno i'm no programmer.
