Strategies for fighting the Penguin ship

Does anyone have any good strategies for defeating this first major boss with the distress beacon? I've died 3 times and I have to craft the beacon each time, so maybe there's a better way?

Activate him in a town or other structure. He will kill the civs and guards and you can take shots at him and hit him if your close enough.

Make sure to make armor and get a good weapon.

If you don't mind being cheap about it, make an iron bow, and dig a shaft downward until you're protected by a dozen or so tiles of dirt/etc. Then pop back up to the surface, spawn him, and shoot straight upward. He'll die fairly quickly. Perhaps make a pocket of open space near the bottom, as well, to dodge the small UFO's slow energy attacks, and his big energy attack. Good luck!

If you can find a gun merchant and buy a sniper rifle, that will do a lot to improve your odds

I got myself one with 9 DPS and it killed the UFO pretty quickly

I just made an Iron bow, kept walking to the left, and just spammed it at him.

The ship's attack itself is easily dodged, the only worry seems to be the AI that spawns with it.

Are you wearing iron armor yet? With Iron Armor and an Iron Bow, he should be relatively easy.

I don't even bother with the adds, just take down the boss, then clean up any adds.

You can make iron armor? I fought him using copper and could not find the option for iron.

Make a bunch of small pillars of dirt you can jump over (so the adds can't hit you) and have an iron bow. Plug away at it, dodging it's attacks. Could win that way, even if nekkid.

Iron armor is your racial T1 armor.

Iron won't be called "Iron". It is unique for each race. (Apex is called Defector Armor, for example.) It should be the lowest items in the list at the anvil.

Race armor basically just takes the copper armor and adds iron to it.

So essentially it's iron armor without being labeled as such. For example, the first tier of glitch armor is Knaves Armor.

Make a Fort. I make T-shaped structures. The shaft will be in the background but the plateu of the T will be made of the strongest material I have. It will shield you from a lot, prevent the boss from squishing you, and provide a platform for you to jump onto and melee him. I've beat him twice now with melee weapons by just creating several T-structures. Works with the other two bosses as well.

Dig straight down until you get obsidian, mine some obsidian and return to the top and build a small obsidian fort with a thick ceiling. The obsidian survives a couple of smashes from the UFO before it crumbles entirely.

Have doors on either side of your fort so that you can defend against horizontal shots from stuff on the ground.

There isn't really a need for strategy on this boss. Just make yourself full 'Snow Infantry' armor, and an Iron Bow. He goes down relatively quick, despite being a boss.
Note : The penguins he spawns can get quite irritating, as they cancel your drawback. If the fight is prolonged, you might want to take care of them quickly.

Edit : Snow Infantry armor is made at a Yarn Spinner for a total of 33 leather.

Snow infantry over copper? Since the patch it seems like copper is better than snow infantry now. Not at a comp with the game, so can't double check, but that was my feeling.

I made a tall background structure with platforms to fight the IFP (Identified Flying Penguin). Kept moving up and down, and it helped having Pulse Jump for whenever I did not land on a platform. While doing so, I kept whacking him with my melee whenever he got close, and I shot him with my Sniper/Bow whenever he got far away.

Im on a server with 3 friends and we didnt know what would happened when we placed the beacon so we all did it together at the same time on 1 planet and 3 ships came at the same time with 3 times the numbers of Ai as well so if was pretty difficult considerign we had normal bows and no armour haha.

I killed it yesterday with an iron bow in about 4 shots, but I'm not sure if it was just a bug, or if it's been nerfed into the ground. 4 shots to kill a boss? Bosses should be challenging! Just like they were before the patch. Yeah, you couldn't kill them with the starter equipment, but you have to explore to find ores and new weapons like in any other game with progression, that's what the game's meant to be about; exploration!

I know it's a beta and that the bosses are all place-holders, but at least make it fun to test the game, it's boring being able to kill stuff so easily... I liked the difficulty before the patch, it was just armour that needed fixing. If I have the highest tier armour, level 20s shouldn't be able to 1 hit me when the maximum level is 40. Only level 40s should do that.

Sounds like that was the bow before the latest patch. I killed him in the latest build with the iron bow, but took me a couple dozen shots.

Weapon damage was broken last version, it was completely possible to kill a boss in 4 shots with an iron bow.
It's still stupidly easy to kill it with an iron bow, but slightly less so
