Only played for a couple days now.. And I already have storage issues.. And it's only going to get worse.. way worse..I'd love bigger storage options of some kind.. What about you? Aren't your places/ships/areas just one big ugly container mess?

YES! I completely agree. I ran out of room on my spaceship with chests stuck in every open place possible. I ended up finding a planet to build my base on and spending hours trying to move all of my stuff down from my spaceship into my base.

I think chest size should be doubled. I always end up filling up 2+ chests with decorative items from ONE npc base

Storage at the current time is completely unorganized because of the limited space in each chest/barrel etc

Don't forget that you have a rather significant ship locker. It holds 65 (I think?) items, in addition to any chests you can plop down on your ship.

still not enough, i have a massive base with lots and lots crates, chests, fridges, wardrobes the whole lot and im still struggling to store all my loot from planets. my ship is also a mess now -__-

I have 30+ hours in the game already, haven't deleted anything, and I can store everything INCLUDING all crafting machines on my ship alone. One line of chests along the top of the chest on wood planks, and machines below that. I still have 9 empty chests, and ~5 halfway empty chests. Also keep in mind ships will be upgradeable in the real game, I believe up to ~6x larger.

With that said, I still agree. I don't think it should be early on in the game though. Every tier we should unlock slightly bigger chests. Maybe something like 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, etc.

Screenshot please. I think you could fit ~40 chests in there assuming you are using planks or other types of shelves for chests to sit on.

If you did that, I'm only assuming you are mining every single town/village/dungeon you come across. This game is definitely not for hoarders, you'll never be able to store all that stuff. :O

Use Apex Lab Lockers. They are the same size as chests, have 4x4 space, and stack on top of each other. The inside of the ship is ten blocks high and will fit five lockers every two (full-height) tiles.

you know that you can make a home planet, whit the navigation systems, pick the biggest one and make your vault there, you should have a good amout of space.

i have some of those but not many, i still think storage is an issue for tomb raiders like me who tear a place down after killing everyone. so i can take the decorations back with me to use in later date.

I understand that some people are not pack rats.. I wrote this post because a lot of us are hoarders, while still wanting to maintain a nice house / ship.. And I'm finding it extremely difficult with the amount of crates, lockers, chests that I need to keep everything.. I'm just glad I'm not the only hoarder that is having a hard time with it all =)

it is only a house, me i talk about the whole planet.

joking aside, i read on preview devs talk that storage chest will be bigger at higher tier.

I think that the issue with larger storage (if it is solved) presents a new problem. We are going to be in desperate need of a efficient interaction system that makes 'transferring storaged content' easier.

    IDEA !
I already like that you can destroy a chest with contents inside it (opposite to terraria) but wouldnt it be more awesome (with these amounts of volume due to huge amount of content) to be able to 'replace' a chest without removing the contents? Like a 'gravity beam' tool or something lore-fitting, that can move chests around with their contents. Makes hauling and 'resettling' to new storage places so much easier.

I just dread the idea to have to relocate my storage at some point with the current interface. And i know i will want to at some point.

i think if you stack lockers and such maybe they should make one huge storage
it gets a bit clustered with my current setup

I agree with that. Also, I think that chests of different sizes should have different storage capacities. Big chests are twice as big as normal chests but can't contain more items.

To get rid of the problem, I have a suggestion I've been thinking about for a long time : Shared storage.
In the current version, Starbound suffers from the same problem Minecraft and especially Terraria have : Containers are independent entities. This means that you have to make all the sorting by yourself. This is not a problem in the early game, as you'll mostly use only ~5-6 chests plus the shiplocker, but later in the game when you have access to more items, this is much more noticeable. Special mention to multiplayer servers : On Terraria, my friends and me agreed to have a common storage room to avoid farming something if someone else has piles of it. The problem is, everyone has a different sorting logic, but also HATES to throw or sell stuff. As a result, chests are an undescribable mess, and while I tried to sort everything twice, it was useless after 3 days as more stuff came in. Moreover, as more items come in, people forget in which chest is what, and begin to place items in other chests, resulting in split stacks.

One solution for it could be to have a central storage unit. Basically, it's a craftable furniture items that, when placed, acts as a central for storage in a particular zone. How to use ? Simple : Just place a chest somewhere and then wire it to the unit to connect both. You can connect as many as you want. The unit has an UI similar to the scanner and has several elements :
    - Re-link button : Links all chests that are wired and unlinks those who aren't wired anymore. Linked chests can't be accessed but only them can be used to store stuff using the CSU. Re-evaluates total storage space accordingly (Sum of the capacity of all containers). If the stored amount exceeds the new maximal amounts, items in excess are dropped. What items ? Up to implementation. Destroying linked chests may result in this too so be careful !
    - Quick stack : Terraria Quick stack. Nuff said.
    - Retrieve zone : The UI is similar to crafting UI - Items are shown as a list with category/rarity buttons and a search feature. Choose an item, enter the quantity and press "take" to take the item.
    - Store zone : 16 cases like chests. Place items inside and press "store" to store the items. Not enough room ? The CSU will still store some items, and will return the rest to you.

This has been conceived with a Map implementation in mind.

See.. this is what I would love to avoid.. currently my ship looks like this.. And I'd preffer to keep it that way.. (This means more frequent trips to a storage planet though) I know.. but I'll suffer..

And a Gravity beam for moving full chests sounds awesome =)

One of the issues with a home planet for storage is that there is no bookmarking sytsem in place yet, so when you go back to your home its very easy to loose where you were.

This is made worse by the fact that as you progress you essentially have to abandon the galaxy near where you started in order to find higher level enemies and gear.

Yes, a planetary bookmark mod would be awesome..
Right now I'm not personally bothered by your problem as I'm playing a server and just relog to singleplayer where I have my storage.. But yeah, I get your point.. We all want bookmarks for different reasons =)
