One thing that ends up being irritating in many games is the storage system. In most games like Starbound (i.e. Terraria) storage is often annoying and nearly unusable in the long run, as you have a large amount of material that needs to be stored, but the storage system makes it easier just to carry stuff in your inventory! So, I had a couple of basic possibilities. #1) a 'chest' like system, with decent organizational tools and ability to assign 'chests' with clearly visible indicators of their content. could be anything from lockers to complex storage machines, even having both kinds in game! #2) a centralized system based on your station, that can be accessed via special repositories, and pretty much teleports stored items to the location. would make the station even more important, but allow easy sharing of items between station and homeworlds. #3) something else? (will edit this post with any good ideas people come up with)
I didnt like the storage system in Terraria, i couldnt remember in which shest i wanted to store certain items... I like the second option with your staff being teleported to you from your station. But i'd say that you should be able to teleport only few items at once and teleporting items should be i some way expensive(costs lots of energy etc). So in conclusion: you have huge stores on your station which can be accesable personally or via teleprter when you are on the surface of the planet. There is also disscusion about personal inventory: http://community.playstarbound.com/...ment-features-functionality.6374/#post-127363
Your first two ideas are awesome, though the chests indicators (if its a name or something) could clutter the screen so it should be a setting in options whether you can see them. I disagree with the third option tho :P
#1 seems fair and balanced, but #2 could possibly make getting things a little too easy. Possibly #1 mixed with some kind of mobile storage that you have to manufacture, like a truck/cargo spacecraft, to get large amounts of stuff to a location for whatever purpose you have for it.
also i want a backpack that you can place it in your tech slot that increases your carrying capacity.(also adds a visual backpack on your back)
i like that. But what tech slot ? I think, that it would fits the devs idea to place your backpack on the back slot instead of a jetpack, oxygen tank ect.
A 'sorting machine' could be a useful tool to have. Basically a machine that you can assign which chest/containers you want to send particular items (or item genres) to, and when you 'deposit all' it will automatically sort the set items into the required chests.
Actually I like the way to store items in Terraria. But I really wanted to place item icons on the chests (or on the signs above them - right-clicking on 'em every time is annoying). Hope to see this ability in Starbound.
You actually like the Terraria system? wow, you must not have had as much stuff as I usually did. The problem with Terraria's system is more obvious late game, when you have tons of resources you don't want to get rid of, and storing them is a hassle unless you want to spend 10 minutes looking for each individual item you need.
I got so annoyed with having so much random crap in all of my chests in Terraria that I sat down for half an hour and rearranged everything into categories. Then after 10 minutes playing it was all mixed up again. I think a sorting machine like the one mentioned above would be an awesome idea
My brothers and I didn't mind the storage system in Terr; We made signs for each chest and devided it out that way. Worked for us :S But I do like the idea of making it easier, for sure!
oh wow, I really like #2. A centralized storage system perhaps with an automatic sorting feature or something like that. Adding to this idea, I think it would be nice if while you were exploring a planet, you could somehow send your excess items back to the station without having to leave the planet.
Mainly hoping to adress the 2 key problems with Terraria's storage system. 1) everything got messed up and cluttered in minutes, no matter how much work you put into organizing it. 2) you almost always had to either a) check 3-4 chests, as the needed item is in that 'group'. b) check the one chest for that one item type out of all 120 of your chests.
No matter what they do with the storage system, I really hope it is an improvement over Terraria. That was just a problem. I made a really organized storage room but within about an hour it was a mess again. I think a centralized storage, especially with a search/organize feature would be nice.
I definitely agree that chests need to have more organisation than Terraria. When you get so many items it becomes ridiculous trying to store them logically and remember where you've put everything. I'd love some kind of large storage area that you can put items in, with options to resort the items, or view specific items via tabs eg weapons, or crafting materials. I think the devs vaguely mentioned something about allowing items to be accessed from both your ship and on the planets surface via certain storage items, but we'll have to see. I also made a thread a while ago about a vault use to store items if you fancied a read
I hope there are chest in this game like that. i just used 'quick stack' on all my chest and see what i was left with. but I see other peoples problems. I had the same problem in minecraft ...that was until i installed the buildcraft mod and made my own sorting machines! wahahaha
the automatic sorting machine would be great, but OP unless its expensive. I have an idea also: if you want to have more space in inv. you could build a chest with legs attached to it and it will act like a mimic except it wont attack, only follow you and carry your stuff. This is just a small idea.
