Quoted for truth, and with peoples suggestions about restricting block placement near npcs and such, that also removes their ability to say... build in/add onto town and the like, which restricts honest players because people can cheese things out, not really a good thing to do imo.

So then what is a good penalty?

because there are so many people posting the argument "I will play the way i want to play, its not affecting anyone else"

That is what CHEATS are for. so that people who want to ruin the balance of the game can. BY KEEPING IN EXPLOITS LIKE THIS, YOU ARE RUINING THE BALANCE OF THE GAME. I cannot stress that point enough. you should be requesting cheats, as that is what you want.

No respectable developer wants to release an unbalanced game, it is simply not fun for the majority. This exploit allows you to get tech and resources far beyond your means, so how about instead of defending the exploit, you ask for the devs to put in cheats. this saves you time and allows the devs to further balance the game a create more enjoyable combat. If you want to be able to easily kill everything, thats what cheats do.

Dying and losing pixels, maybe having a house ripped up and require repairs.

I'm a little confused why this is such an issue for people. How does something that someone does in their game affect you in any way? I think it would be incredibly stupid to jeopardize other systems like building, just because you don't like that other people use an easier way to progress. The complaint makes very little sense to me :\ if you think its too easy, don't do it yourself.

I wouldn't enjoy if it happened to me, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be included in the game.
That's like saying "people dislike their characters dying, you should leave that out" or "I don't like that things cost currency, leave that out"
Losing Should Be Fun. Having your structures see battle and take damage, this is emergent and fun. It's change that you yourself did not cause, and that alone makes it interesting. Leaving it out because players don't want their structures to get damaged, seems kind of weird. It sacrifices a huge gameplay opportunity, so finicky folk can rest easy knowing their structures will remain as they left them, safe forever. That mindset is absolute poison to the sandbox genre. In my opinion anyway!

If you really don't like the idea though, that's fine! I'm only suggesting it is all.

To be honest, I'm not going to go back and read 7 pages... sorry lol

Why not just make it so attacks can't go through blocks or doors? It makes perfect sense... Does it not?

Being one hit KOd when wearing the strongest armor in the game ruins the balance of the game far more than using a legitimate defensive strategy to prevent being one hit KOd.

We don't police your gameplay, the game designers do. That's their job: to give the player a challenge and a carefully balanced range of tools to solve it with. And our job as beta testers is to tell them how that balance is working out.

Walling in enemies isn't "wrong," but it is imbalanced. It renders combat irrelevant. It renders all other gameplay strategies irrelevant. It renders entire tiers irrelevant because the optimal strategy to beat the boss is *always* to fly to the highest-level planet in the sector, wall off every monster on the way to the dungeon/bottom of the earth and get top level gear. It cheapens not your game, but the entire game, and huffing that you should have some right to do it simply because the designers didn't realize how exploitable it was before the beta is silly.

If you think walling enemies in enhances the game, then make your case for it. Tell us how being able to neutralize any enemy by drawing a circle around it with your mouse improves the game balance. If you can't, it no more deserves to stay in the game than attacking through walls.

and yes that is also a problem. both need to be fixed.

    No

The thing is that if somehow a container got broken in the fracas and its contents spilled out, they can despawn, and that's a deal-breaker

If items on the ground didn't do that and a monster tearing your house up just meant you had to fix it, that would be fine

i strongly suggest you go play 7 days to die. you'll learn extremely quickly why NPC block damage is a terrible idea, when you start realizing you're spending half your playtime repairing your base every single day cycle, just to have it get wrecked again the following night.

"I don't understand why people feel the need to police how other people play."

I see this quote or some version of it a lot. It is always prefaced with some version of "I don't understand why..." or "I don't know why..."

If you "don't understand why people feel the need to police how other people play", I've got great news for you. WE REALLY, REALLY, DON'T FEEL ANY SUCH NEED. That's not the focus of the argument.

Some of us just prefer a challenge, that's all. And asking our crowd, the type of gamers that enjoy putting our skills to the limit, to voluntarily fight with one hand tied behind our back, is just never going to fly.

There is a HUGE difference between Exploit and Imbalance. Exploits are voluntary, if you want to use an Exploit it doesn't matter to any of us at all (except in multiplayer contests, of course). Imbalances, however, hurt many of your fellow gamers by detracting from the core experience of overcoming obstacles through experimentation, persistence and panache.

Please, oh please tell me that you see the difference.

He suggested it could be destroyed FOR A SHORT TIME AFTER YOU BUILD IT. So basically, maybe the blocks could be destroyed for say,30 seconds after they've been placed. Not permanently. A lot of people has reading issues here.

I have played 7 days to die and it's annoying to have your stuff destroyed, but this is completely different as it is only temporarily.

Once the balance is figured out we won't have to 'cheat' to kill high level monsters.

I hate when people spout the dominant strategy theory as if it were some absolute truth because apparently humans are incapable of things like the leather whip challenge.... oh wait that IS a thing! In the first castlevania you could cheese EVERY BOSS barring the giant bat with the holy water and this was the easiest way to do it as it stun-locked them into oblivion. But not everyone did it that way because not everyone wanted to. To me this game should be balanced around the single player as the primary focus with multiplayer as a extra bonus to mess around with and that if people want to exploit and cheat let em. This isn't LoL or some other game designed to be purely competitive and doesn't have to be treated as such. Block destruction is certainly not something I want to see in enemies. At most make certain flying bosses phase through blocks like basically every terraria boss does BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE MANUALLY SUMMONED. To me when the hard mode bosses were made to be able to spawn randomly on their own took away from my enjoyment of the game because at the time they can begin to appear you more than likely aren't even close to being ready to fight them. I also happen to think bosses that deal massive damage and cover large portions of screen with attacks need to be slow, clunky, and easy to outrun or dodge because this isn't a bullet hell shooter where you die and just jump right back into the fight exactly where you left off with the boss still at half health he leaves and you start it over. Especially with the games death penalty in place and no way to store pixels for safe keeping. On another note hard for the sake of being hard is a terrible idea as well as a game isn'tt good by virtue of difficulty alone. Sure I loved Ninja Gaiden and Journey to Silius but Karnov was harder than either of these and was one of the WORST games I've ever played. Some challenge is good but it still need to be do-able by us lesser mortals. If the designer puts in a way to make the fight easy I personally, even if I wouldn't use it, think that's just cherry long as it's not the ONLY way to beat the enemy/solve the puzzle or whatever because it allows for a hard way to please the people who want it to be hard AND an easy way for those who don't meaning it caters to a much wider audience than just one or the other.

But just like EVERYTHING ELSE EVERYONE ELSE HAS SAID HERE this is just my opinion and not some absolute truth.

Unfortunately this seems to be the case with many people. I and several others have already provided perfectly good reasons explaining why having broken dominant strategies in games is a bad idea, and why the argument "if you don't like it don't do it" is terrible, but then on the next page someone posts the same argument that has just been refuted. So it's a big cycle of different people repeating the same arguments to each other.

  23. ThunderPants

    ThunderPants Yeah, You!

    I firmly disagree with you.
But to be fair, no one knows if the developers want it to be this way or not at this point.

I would love to see one of them comment on this...

why not just have it that aggroed monsters will attack back and through walls and be able to hit the player? Or remove the ability to attack through walls altogether?
