I feel the need to start off by saying I am really enjoying where the game is going. I am excited to see what all gets added as this beta continues. I read what the devs want to add, and it sounds really cool. I add that in, because I know fans tend to take critique as "bashing". So, having said and meant the praise.. It doesn't seem to matter much how high into the tier you get, Stone always seems to be just as hard to get through as ever. I have a diamond drill, and can cut out Rubium ore like a hot knife through butter. I can rip through dirt like nothing, but come into contact with stone...and it's nearly a dead stop. Now yeah, cobblestone does get a lot easier, but i'm more after the Sandstone and Magma stone and stuff like that. I think there should be a higher tier for the tools. Why not go all the way up to an impervium drill? Or, make us work for some really strong heavy earth mover equipment. I wouldn't mind having to put in the time to earn a few levels of Jackhammers. Maybe some kind of blasting caps. I briefly played with a mod that gave me an insane mining lazer that ripped through anything in one blast. Now, I'm not suggesting anything that OP, but when I'm at the "end game" it can be frustrating to be able to rip right through everything, but still be stuck for several seconds on a rock. True. I should really be more clear in my thoughts! I'm kind of lumping all that in together. I didn't say that though. I would kind of expect obsidian to be a little rougher, but to me it still feels like a copper pickaxe trying to get through it.
Off-topic, but - Obsidian... that made me read about obsidian... apparently from it are the sharpest surgical scalpel blades made of... "well-crafted obsidian blades have a cutting edge many times sharper than high-quality steel surgical scalpels, the cutting edge of the blade being only about 3 nanometers thick" (The Western journal of medicine136 (3): 265–269.).
Not too off topic really. My title here kind of sucks for the main point, even though I do harp on stone itself. Really my main idea was supposed to be how it would be cool to have higher up mining tools. You can make robots and have a ship and all sorts of other cool stuff. So why not say, an Obsidian drill?
Off-topic, but obsidian in real life is very easy to break. It places a 5 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and it can in fact be easily broken with a well placed hit by a stone.
Maybe because it's volcanic glass and shatters into painfully sharp pieces when struck we're just being extra careful. Hell, it's even so sharp and pointy even bombs refuse explode on it with full force.
