Still No Key Rebinding?

Even as a righty I feel your pain. Games should always offer at least limited key mapping options. Not every gamer is a righty or has the same control/dexterity.

It is somewhat concerning that rebinding keys is apparently such a difficult addition. Even a temporary rudimentary implementation that essentially masks the actual inputs with different keys the way outside applications do (in layman's terms) would be fine for now.

    Thank you for the update.

I wonder why, when you originally decided on the control scheme, the controls weren't configured to coordinate with the settings on an alterable config file. I don't know a lot about programming, but if keybindings are something you want to eventually have, wouldn't it be immensely easier to put them in at the start?

Yes, it would be easier... I am going to assume they used variables instead of constants for the controls, and that the problems is creating an interface, creating key mapping, bug testing the interface, creating support for different controllers and minging about with compatibility.
Patience (and the ability to read that the game is in the first stage of beta and understanding what that means) is severely lacking in this community* it seems. Also, entitlement is a problem..... Apparently everyone* is an expert on how to best make a game but the devs. I guess I can understand how the community feels as I personally have made and published 5 open world-sandbox-mmorpg's already this year and made $100 000 000. In beta state, the games I made were perfect and %100 complete when I released them to the community. The alpha state was me releasing a complete expansion for each game, and the expansions doubled the performance my games even though they were perfect to begin with. Really, I cant understand how chucklefish is so incompetent at making games, they should swing by my igloo in Canada and get some fakkin 'puter lessons, Deutschland will supply the beers as they know what they are doing when it comes to beer, but I wouldn't rely on them to successfully invade England....

*when I say 'community' and 'everyone' I mean 20 people out of 750 000. I probably don't mean you, the reader. But if I do mean you, you know who you are as you are a complete arsehole and you need to get some perspective. The rest of you are fantastic people, and I salute you.

You act like charging people for games still in development is a long time established concept. The whole "Pay for the game, play the developed game until it's finished" is a new thing. It's not really a matter of entitlement when you've already paid and found features lacking. It's likely that a lot would have opted not to purchase at this stage, had they known this feature was missing.

People make the same assumptions they would have made on any retail release, that it's playable and have certain features and given how new this business/development model is, I can't really fault them too much for it.

Expecting the game to be feature complete in early beta is erroneous. But expecting it to have the bare minimum of user preference settings, like mappable controls? I don't think it's that unreasonable thing to expect.

It doesn't though, but now we've made the developer aware that it's a feature we want and they have it in development. Which I think it a good time to stop mindlessly complaining about the developers just as much as it's a good time to stop complaining about the people requesting the feature.

The latter honestly serves no other purpose than satisfying your own ego at this stage.

Forget "still" this is an early access game. It's pretty unnecessary to open threads like these. It will happen once they start to work for it.
Being patient will solve this problem, since Chucklefish has way more potential then any other indie game developers. They are obviously working on this game.

^ This is why it IS necessary to open threads like these. The "early access" gimmick is played out. The game is in beta, period. "Early access" is irrelevant regarding the topic of discussion. Had you read the majority of the thread, you would understand why.

LOL! I'm not sure if you are serious about this statement and that you now believe I have 5 games published and currently have $100 000 that I hoard in my igloo, or that you are taking a part out of context because of reasons. I am certainly having a laugh, but satisfying my ego I am not. My ego is never satisfied.

    Also....
    indeed.

Asking for features that are present in nearly all games is hardly a matter of entitlement.

Asking for features to be added to a game we've paid for seems perfectly reasonable.

Asking for additional features while the game is still in development seems well timed.

Expecting those features to be added instantly or berating the developers for not having them in the first place (Questioning it on the other hand...) or adding them quickly enough is not reasonable. If you want to belittle someone for something, those are probably the thing you should single out. You know, when those things are actually present in a post.

I'm perfectly capable of recognizing that the rest of your post is sarcasm. Why you felt the need to write a sarcastic and incoherent rant though, I do not understand. To make yourself appear knowledgeable and superior? Very likely.

Not everyone feels a need to appear superior, some people just like to use humour instead of snarky remarks to make a point.

This is true, but in my case I have incredibly small male genitalia so I need to take out my frustrations on the internet by trolling forums of games I really like and beating dead horses. Wait.... I was supposed to PM this.... where is the edit button....

    The point being?

Don't ask for features that are standard in just about every single PC game? Because if you do you're an entitled twerp with zero respect for the developers and no understanding whatsoever of software development?

Guys, seriously... People will ask for features they think are missing. If they're civil and patient when doing so, there's no need for you guys to jump to the developers defence. The developers are perfectly capable of providing their own snarky responses.

    See?

But you know what, if you can find me a quote of a developer explicitly telling us to stop asking for features, feel free to post it. Until then, I'll keep waiting for this feature and keep asking for other features in the most civil possible way.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that it makes it very hard for some people with disabilities to play, it definitely really effects me whenever I can't rebind keys.

We should have key rebinding now, though in an editable config and not with a UI.

Where is this cfg file? All I can find is "starbound.config" which doesn't seem to have anything relevant to key binding in it. Info please... thank you.
