Still No Key Rebinding?

Am I missing something in the patch notes, or are keys still not rebindable? Since early December, we've been told that remapping keys is "coming in a few weeks." As a lefty that remaps 95% of the keys in all my games, this kind of core functionality would be appreciated sooner than later instead of fluff like "Boss Lore."

Not sure what to make of this new early access trend anymore... Seems like priorities end up getting skewed.

EDIT: Just to update those of you who care, as of the 2/18 patch, it looks like key rebinding is finally in (by altering the .cfg... no UI yet)

  2. They'll get to it when they get to it, I'm left handed but I make due as well as bunches of other lefties out there. While I'm sure EVERYONE not just left handed people are waiting for key remapping options, it doesn't break the game and therefore isn't a priority. we may have already had key remapping if people didn't cry about character/ship wipes and the devs had to spend a month rewriting the code to accomidate it.

Just wait patiently like everyone else, the less you obsess over it the faster it'll come.

I haven't until now. First thing I'd like to say is that I understand implementing key rebinding isn't an easy thing to do. If it was, there would be a mod for it available to download, so I'm not going to go off the rails like that guy because it's a little extreme. HOWEVER, I think the devs need to step up their GDD (game design document) skill and really think on what their priorities should be. As I said in the first post, "Boss Lore" should not be one of those priorities... at all. It's basically a slap in the face.

Next point I'd like to make relating to the "You guys need to chill out, it's an early access game" statement in that post, and you can find more expanded similar opinions if you watch Boogie2988's and TotalBiscuit's YouTube videos about early access, is that it frankly doesn't matter if this is an early access game or not, and as devs, they shouldn't be using that as an excuse, and I'll tell you why. 1) Regarding key mapping, they've had more than ample time to get this core functionality into the game. I have participated in numerous closed betas and even alphas for a variety of games (FPS, MMO, dungeon crawler, RPG specifically), and key remapping was in and working in every single one of those games. Many of these games, I might add, didn't have thousands of dollars being thrown at them by early access buyers like this game has, which means the devs here need to have their feet held to the fire even more because the expectation is higher. Finally, 2) an early access game dev can essentially say, "this is an early access game guys, quit complaining" forever because of the sheer fact that it IS an early access game, which allows them to have a easy out and quick excuse regarding X or Y feature for as long as they want until they decide the game is officially finished, which for some early access games, may never come for this very reason... It makes the dev's life easier, because when people ask about bugs or features, they can just say "It's early access, we're working on it." It's the equivalent of driving a POS broken car to work every morning when you have a fully functioning, brand new BMW sitting in your driveway just because you like having the excuse of blaming your old broken car when you're late for work.

We need more background decoration and different types of beds and tables that all don't add to the gameplay at all, screw keybindings.

Yes yes yes. Add key binding already!

    Come on Dev's it's 2014!

Keybinding should be a a basic fundamental for games. it's not rocket science.
And yes I've been in game development, I was involved in 2 games released on the Amiga A500 back in the day.

Seriously... whats the point working on other stuff when a lot of people still can't even play?
A lot of the threads on the Steam forums are suggesting 3rd party software, we shouldn't have to rely on 3rd party.
I've had the game over a month.... I've supported you, you promised this feature in the last update but some of us still can't play.

Making keys rebindable is something that takes code work. Making a bed is pixelart.

The people working on the code had their work cut out for them, rewriting some big parts. No doubt a lot of time went into all that. And the people doing the pixelart did their thing and made new beds and tables. If they didnt work on that, they wouldnt have been able to add rebindable keys anyway, not without delaying the patch some more.

Precisely - they draw on different skill sets, which is why "programmer art" is usually a term of derision ;)

It doesn't. I already know how to change the key bindings using programs autohotkey and glovepie. The point that people seem to miss is that we shouldn't have to (and I won't) use 3rd party software to replace a basic core function of the game that should have been implemented from the get-go. There's literally no excuse to not have it in by now other than, "Sorry, we didn't do very well planning our game design documentation," which is the truth.

It just sort of confuses me how it wasn't in the base game. Then 2-3 updates after they announce they're working on it and post a screenshot on how it'd work, its still not here. I get it takes time, but it just seems sorta off putting to me.

    Let's be fair here.

No-one does well planning their design documentation. It's miraculous enough when you get some at all.

You missed the entire point of my post. It was about how messed up their priorities are, not about how to create beds in videogames. "Pixelart" still requires implementation, before any of that the core game (including keybindings) should've been coded.

By your own statement you're aware of "early access", yet you complain about a game that hasn't all its planned features yet. Okay.

There is always stuff that's faster implemented or finished earlier. Complaning about X, because you think it delays feature Y is futile.

Perhaps you could provide one of your autohotkey scripts for remapping key binds to the other people that might want to use it.
I haven't used it for years and don't need it myself, but from what I recall it ran pretty simply without a fuss in your systray and was easily enabled/disabled.

The term, "early access" doesn't justify the fact that key remapping still isn't in this late in development. See my posts above. The fact is, the game is classified as being in beta... Again, I've tested early ALPHAS that have this feature that aren't even funded 1/4 of the money this game has collected.
