I really enjoyed Last Exile, and it does do Steampunk well.

The other day I was checking for Steampunk anime and there aren't that many.

Steampunk villages would be better not a race.

The Viking Elves should be steampunk.

That wouldn't work too well because there were no Vikings in the Victorian era. But having the Viking Elves use steampunk-like tech is a pretty intriguing idea

Maybe not the next race, but it would be neat.

Steampunk would definitely fit somewhere in the game, but as a race? I doubt it. Maybe old factories with steam-powered machines that have Steampunk enemies and loot? That should satisfy the Steampunk-junkies.

To me steam punk is more an art style that applies to everyday things than something that would fit into a game like Starbound/Terraria.
I love the steampunk laptops I've seen, but how would the devs incorporate that kind of detail into a pixel centered game?
Steampunk style would require a whole game that revolved around the details involved in the fantasy. A whole new backstory and less emphasis on space.

Just change everything to brass, add a bunch of pores with steam coming out, throw a few top hats on top, and boom. You are now the proud owner of something that can be Steampunk.

    NO NO NO
Steampunk is far more than that!
There are books and shows and stories...
You need to go deeper to unlock the awesome.

The Golden Compass is one example that comes to mind although the movie was so-so.

This is a concern of mine as well. Steampunk items tend to have a lot of detail and it's hard to present that properly in low resolution sprites. If you take a look at the steampunk helmet that will be in game from the hat contest and compare the artwork with the final sprite, you can see how much of that intricate detail is lost in the transition. Don't get me wrong, I love the hat and am definitely looking forward to seeing it in game, but there really needs to be more visible detail to get the full steampunk feel and that just isn't possible with these tiny sprites.

  11. I suggested a steampunk race, hoping it would be added post-release. I saw another steampunk race suggestion too, but I forgot which one it was.

We got a hipster over here, guys!

Haha, I do the same thing sometimes.

I recently discovered Steampunk. I mean, I always LIKED it, but it wasn't until I decided to write Steampunk fiction that I realized how great of a genre and community it is.

A Race wouldn't really work with for the addition of Steampunk. At the same time, I don't really want or need Steampunk in Starbound. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, but Starbound is a game about space exploration. Industrial-Age technology doesn't really fit in very well...

  13. How so? What difference does it make if there were a civilization based on a steam-powered society? Why does a culture that is often based on the middle of the spectrum "not fit very well", when those cultures on both ends of the spectrum [ancient and futuristic] fit well?

And to add to that, how is a race's culture in any way obstructive to the catch of the game, which is to explore?

Well how does that explain how florans got into the space age. They are war like and by all of screenshots we've seen they look fairly primitive. The Glitch are different because they outcasts have unlimited knowledge. You worded your argument fairly poorly.

The primitive races were all introduced to Space Travel, and advanced technology. I understand that.
However, Steampunk is essentially defined by the use of outdated, Victorian technology.
I mean, there IS an aspect of Victorian style and fashion, but the other races all just have primitive Societies and Steampunk isn't really a method of society and organization of said society. Although I might as well give up on this; one of the fundamental laws of these forums is that Suika never loses an argument :p

  16. That still hasn't answered the question. How is it still any different from the primitive species, or better yet, the Glitches?

The Apex are based upon a retro-futuristic WWII culture, which, despite having numerous space programs, has the lack to explore past the moon. Not to mention the only times when they actually had a man in space is during the 1960's and beyond. Taking the vastness of space in consideration, they are almost similar in limitations as a steampunk society.

You could argue that primitive societies are exempt from this "not fit very well" rule due to the outside source introducing space travel to them. But why is the Steampunk society exempt from the introduction to space travel? There isn't a halt in technological advancement during this era- It's pretty much the age of enlightenment. That means discoveries and introduction to advanced technology is indeed possible.

You could also argue that "steampunk ships wouldn't fit well". Wooden spaceships don't either. There goes the Floran race. Stone spaceships don't either. There goes the Glitch and Avian race. I'm assuming the reply to that would be "But they were introduced to space travel, so they get the spaceship things!". The counter-reply would be the previous paragraph.

PS: Steampunk != Victorian. They just fit really well together. It also fits futuristic worlds wherein steam has [re]claimed the throne in technological advancement, which is the situation for the Parfelians. Steampunk isn't simply retro-futuristic machines either. It's not strictly based on steam-powered machines. It can be related to fashion and design.

I love the idea of steampunk vehicles, such as blimps/airships, small cars, etc, and even weapons. I feel like it would fit more in the game as a tier of technology the player can access with required materials, but the idea of a race focused around it in particular sounds interesting to me as well. I like it. Also, on a side note, I really don't see any relation between anime and steampunk. Coming to a judgement on one based on it's affiliation with the other seems a bit ignorant, in my eyes. Just saying.

  18. The word "Steampunk" is overused, not Steampunk itself. Honestly, it's very unusual to see decent Steampunk setting nowadays.
(calling it so not making it so, ya know ;))

You all made good points. Those who say steampunk shouldn't be a race, I meant theme for a race not an actual race. The race can be cat people or whatever.

  20. I have avoided the use of the word 'steampunk' in my thread OP because of that. However, by definition, they are indeed steampunk, so I used it to describe them.
