Many people like steampunk, but so far starbound does not seem to have any of it. I feel if they add another race it needs to be in a steampunk style, or some steampunk should be included in some other way. What do you people think of steampunk? I'm interested.

A race would be a weird way to take it, I would like to see a furniture set that's steampunk. A vanity armor set that was steampunk would be cool as well.

  3. I feel Steampunk could have had some potential to be interesting, as well as original, until it spreaded like the bubonic plague and everybody started talking about it. Doesn't appeal to me anymore, to be honest.

I like ideas to feel fresh. Unfortunately, Steampunk feels overused to me.

Unfortunately no confirmed steampunk related race yet....YET.
But it would add a nice touch to the game.

It kind of gets me thinking of just how many races the devs are shooting for post-release.

Why? As soon as people start talking about you lose interest? What if that happens to starbound? Hipster :p.
    I kid, I kid.
On a serious note, what don't you find interesting about it? Just interested.
    Yeah true.
The race could be anything, but the theme would be steampunk. Just like the theme for the glitch is medieval.

And for that matter, how many races will be modded in by players? ^_^ If this modding community gets even a quarter as big or good as the Minecraft one, we'll see alot of really amazing stuff coming out.

ok, but as is the medieval theme, the modern theme the futuristic theme etc.

  10. I feel there's a difference between those three (Medieval, Futuristic and Steampunk). Medieval and Futuristic themes are much more general and may encompass plenty of different sub-types, while Steampunk is a more specific matter. In addition, the fact that medieval was an actual age and the futuristic theme is so entrenched in our culture make both of them acceptable to me. Not to mention that the futuristic genre can envelop more than one sub-style, one of them being Steampunk - And it's with that particular aspect I feel saturated with.

This is merely my opinion, of course. I'm not saying Steampunk is wrong, I merely feel it's overhandled.

You're correct that it has spread quite widely, at least the term has. Unfortunately very little of it actually feels like true steampunk to me so I'm always hungering for some real steampunk goodness. I swear half the "steampunk" games and stories I see just throw in a steam locomotive or some Victorian clothing and call the whole thing steampunk. Steampunk needs Victorian-era style, lots of brass mechanical contraptions, and mad scientists doing crazy things with electricity. To put it into perspective, the most recent game I can think of that I would actually consider steampunk is 12 years old.

As for Starbound, so far the only thing I know about is one of the hat contest winners. I'm looking forward to seeing if there's any more steampunk surprises waiting for us. Now if there was a new race introduced later with a steampunk theme that would be awesome.

Overused? Please point me in the direction of steampunk stuff.

  15. I should have used a different expression. Overhandled, is more like what I meant, as basically every community I've visited seems to have an interest in Steampunk activities.

There are several Steampunk-inspired games, of course, which support my point of view. Fable 3 seems to summon that style, for instance. Guns of Icarus being another example.

If it's like Final Fantasy VII, then maybe, I liked what they had going on there and it was believable. But generally I'd say "HELL NO" to steampunk, I have two roommates (well we share an apartment) that are obsessed with steampunk...it's saturated in anime, which I passionately hate (I do not consider older Final Fantasy games as the anime I speak of). If done well, steampunk can be cool though, but they'd have to re-think it some to make it actually interesting again. I liked the clockwork equipment you could make in Dungeons of Dredmor (available on Steam), they had a definite steampunk feel to them.

  17. I'm not really sure how Steampunk has developed there, as I avoid anime. I'll take your word for it, though. Wasn't really aware it had saturated in that area as well.

I'm only familiar with Steampunk in games and online communities, which is where I've seen it grow.

As long as I'm not off my guess, a good Steampunk anime to watch is say... Last Exile, in my opinion that's vrey akin to steampunk, and in my opinion, it also does it extremely well. (I was a big fan of season 1 of Last Exile at least) not many games implement it right though, I'll grant you that. I can't really think of nay new and recent games that really give a steampunk feel. The two that come to mind for me, are FF6 and Arcanum, but those are old as hell. And FF6 wasn't really that steampunk.

FF7 was steampunk with its own style, FF6 did have some elements too.

I got to know Steampunk through a line of very good books. Maybe I got lucky and saw the good Steampunk stuff, because it can be epic. I agree with soup in that the word Steampunk is applied to some bad things, but if you focus on the good stuff steampunk is my fav. Genre.
