As we all know by now, this game is likely to end up on steam. And the community is heavily involved in this, and is filled with talented spriters. So my idea was, why not try to integrate starbound into the steam workshop, much like how skyrim and tf2 were? Just remember to include some guidelines for what you expect from the contributions.
I really think steam is involved enough with the game. I agree with ya there are quite a bit of the community that wants to be involved, but I would much rather general modding and other editors be made before they worry about integrating it into Steam Workshop. I mean Terraria never did this (That I know of) and they had no problem spreading sprites, and mods through the community. Edit: Though it is prob just going to be a pain.. here ya go. You might be right (Post I got this from Here) Code: @Tiy: If the game is available via steam we want to go the whole nine yards with steam support. Steam friends, achievements, all that good stuff
I think that Steam Workshop mod support would be a fantastic edition and a great selling point for the game. Yes, I realize that not everyone is so positive about Valve/Steam; However with the way Steam Workshop does mods, it's not a requirement for mods to function. So for those people who are absolutely against Valve/Steam and everything that it stands for, they need not concern themselves. It's not a requirement, and they won't need it to mod. For the rest of us having Steam Workshop support just makes it extremely convenient for keeping mods up to date, as well as organizing them. Mods are also easily exposed and distributed to the community. I remember playing lots of L4D2 with various mods, and having to keep updating custom maps and such was a little inconvenient. Now I don't even have to think about it when I launch the game. It will update for me automatically. TL2 did a great job with their Steam Workshop support for the most part, with exception to the fact that you had to have the EXACT same mod set in order to play with other people in multiplayer. Even if this is a post release update, it would be a fantastic edition none the less.
I'd like the Steam Workshop thing to be one thing and one thing only: Optional. I really don't want that to be the main method of getting mods for the game (assuming if it does get on Steam, but even then I have a good guess that it will). It can be a wonderful thing for the game as a whole like the above user said, but again I'd like other alternatives to downloading mods as well.
Just to clarify because Steam Workshop is often misunderstood by those who do not use the steam service, Steam Workshop is a distribution method for mods on the steam service. This does not mean that mods cannot be installed manually, or downloaded from other sources. Having Steam Workshop does not make mods in any way exclusive to the platform, it is a distribution method for steam users and makes it convenient for them, and never takes away mods from users who do not use the platform. Example: Torchlight 2 supports mods, and the Steam Workshop. However, I do not have to use Steam Workshop for my mods. I can manually download and the install the mod files without having to touch Steam Workshop. This is also true for all other multi-platform games that have mod support, including games that require steam. So you need not worry. Steam Workshop is never required, and is always optional.
It's a very good idea! It will be helpful for those not very familiar with nodding or the people who appreciate to automated process. But to be honest, I prefer to install my mods manually because of two simples reasons: 1)Steam update the mods automatically (sometimes older version of the mods works better or I don't like the new features) 2)Steam needs to check for an updated version of the mods which make the game launch slower. In any case, I support the idea
There was already a thread on this, please search before you post a thread. Tiy said that if the game made it to steam (which we all know it will eventually, even if it has to go through greenlight) they plan to make use of ALL of the steam features and gave achievements and server lists as an example. I'm assuming this would be sometime post-release when they release the modding API. So there you go.
BUT Tiy wants add everything to Steam... AND the non-steam version where the steam features aren't available? O___o This looks... Madness!
Probably a simple Achievements UI in the menu, and if there isn't some mod-loader in-game or released with the modding API someone will definitely make one. Server lists and things will probably also be in-game rather than going through steam. Tiy just said he'd like to incorporate achievements and friend lists and the like.
It makes sense if he will build a system for that in-game, to not use the steam ones, eh! Let's wait and see, I would love more in-game achievements than steam ones. ^^
I must point out that this thread has been dead for over a year. And while we're on the topic if you search steam workshop by thread title this is technically the first thread specifically about the steam workshop made.
