    First of all pc specs:
    i5-2320 3.2ghz
    GTX 660 ti
    8gb ram

I played starbound with fraps for around 7 hrs on the first day of purchasing this awesome game, but my fps would always stay between 12-35 fps, i have tried all fixs/ work arounds none helped, so i was wondering if was steams problem so i disabled the overlay didt help in the slightest, so i went to the extreme i torrent a copy of starbound and tried running with my save and universe from the steam version and my mouth just dropped was getting 55+fps so i played around for around 30 minutes and it never dropped below 55fps so unless the torrent version had some amazing hack to make the game run at like 2x speed, its steams problem for the horrible fps. so until its fixed ill be playing on the torrented version for hours to come.

( Just thought this post might help the devs figure out anything to do with the fps or if its truly steams fault, plz no hate or ban :) )

I too have been having problems with this. My computer is more than qualified and I have been having trouble getting past thirty.

To fix lag problems on the STEAM version of this game, you need to first close out of steam.

Right click steam icon on your desktop

    Click properties

    Click the compatibility tab

Click Change settings for all users

Uncheck the option Run this program in compatibility mode for:, so that it is turned off. (Also, make sure that the compatibility option is also unchecked on the main Compatibility Tab in properties, just to make sure!)

Hit apply and ok, Start up steam and play Starbound with perfect FPS!

I too, had this problem with I first started the game, But I played around and found that this fixed my problems. Good day folks!

I'm just waiting for optimization put into the game. I have given up after trying every solution that was mentioned in the threads about fps and still seeing no improvement.

Sure. What I posted actually has helped a large number of people, though. I posted it on the Steam forums a few days ago, and a lot of people have said it worked. So, it's up to you =P

indeed. And when I first booted the game up, it wouldn't even start until I turned compatibility mode on.

Can we confirm from someone using a non steam version if this is even the case? Why would the steam version be more laggy than the non steam version?
The overlay doesn't even work right now.

Curtista, i don't see why Steam was set up to run in compatibility mode in the first place for some people. That's not active per default.
FPS aren't that great when i use the first zoom mode (other than that it's ok), haven't tried a non-steam version though.

  11. It's just in need of some optimizing, the fps will get better.

I only get fps drops in villages.

Hmm i got steam version and its not running in compatibility mode and i have very few fps drops to be honest, maybe i am just lucky but its pretty much a constant 60 for me.
Although i am running it in windowed mode.

    Bartwe tweeted a few fixes:

    Unplug (Xbox) controllers
    Disable the steam overlay
    replace Starbound.exe with _opengl.exe

Also, try turning off any anti-viruses running in the background I've found these tend to mess with files on your computer.

I purchased my copy directly from the developers. It's both cheaper, quicker and perhaps gives them that extra couple of dollars that otherwise would befall Steam. I love the soundtrack and have it running in iTunes.

    The overlay is already disabled.
    For me anyway.
And he means run the GL exe. instead of the normal starbound one right?

Actually, I think it was more along these lines:

    1. Rename starbound.exe to old_starbound.exe.
    2. Rename starbound_opengl.exe to starbound.exe.
    3. Run the game either through Steam or the newly renamed executable.

  17. Try

    vsync OFF
fps limit 59 (monitor frequency Hz - 1)
    Max pre-rendered frames 1

    if persist try

    vsync OFF
    fps limit 59
Max pre-rendered frames 1 + Thread optimization off
