Closed Steam Pre-orders?

The name is a bit misleading, but the point I'm trying to get across is that if I pre-order Starbound, will I only be able to access it through Steam once the game is out? And if that happens, what about the beta?

 

I'm pretty sure they are planning to release the beta with the Early Access feature on steam. And to answer your other question I don't think you'll need Steam to play it, only if you want to.

 

You get both the drm free version of the game and a steam key, so you can use whichever version you prefer.

 

If you preorder it now, you will get a steam key, along with a DRM free version of both the beta and the final release (when they are available). However, the moment the beta rolls out on steam, preorders will stop, so you won't be able to preorder it through steam.
