Would be great to play the same character on multiple pcs for those who can't use their main "starbound gaming" pc all the time but still have something to play on. Steam as their own Cloud wich they use for synchronizing gamedata of each persons account on the pc that person is logged on and has the game installed, maybe us it for Starbound aswell?
While I generally wouldn't want to use a feature like this all the time, it would really really be helpful, especially for playing on multiplayer servers. Then you could have your stuff on the server even if you lost your local install or were using a different computer.
Could add an option button if you want to enable this or maybe a slider per character for enableing or dissableing synching. Maybe have 2 sets of lists: "Synched characters" and "Local characters"
Yes to this. I use Steam cloud on other games all the time. I would totally play my character on other machines.
I don't particularly like that the players are stored locally just because that means that people can edit them - does steam cloud actually store the data there, or is it just keep the save files in sync? I would vote that storing them on a starbound-based service would make the most sense. (But also be the most costly for them, so there's that =/)
I totally get what you're saying. I think it's much more important for multiplayer servers that they be allowed to store each player on the server as part of that world as cheating of the type you're describing would be affecting other players. If someone wants to edit/cheat up their own game/character I mind much less. It's when it starts to effect other people's game experience together that it becomes an issue.
Yeah, and I really love that you can play on the same character in both single and multiplayer - that was a big complaint for me in Terraria. Anytime the server was down, or hadn't been updated yet, you were SOL. This is great, because now i have a totally portable experience. However, if you want to maintain the integrity of that portable experience, you've gotta store those profiles on a reliable, external source. I know from experience that running a service like that isn't easy, but it really would make a huge difference to anyone who plays multiplayer.
I registered for the forum specifically to make this same recommendation. Cloud sync would be awesome. I have a PC I primarily play on, but I'd love to be able to jump on my Mac laptop elsewhere from time to time.
Yeah, that's why I'm so for it - I swap between three different machines on a regular basis, all of which have the game on them now. I haven't looked in to it yet, but with Terraria I was using Dropbox to keep them in sync - just move your savegame folder somewhere in dropbox, and then replace it in the game folder itself with a symbolic link. Again, I haven't tested this, but it's definitely worth looking in to for the near-term.
Some kind of optional linking to Dropbox/Google Drive/SkyDrive besides Steam Cloud (game will be DRM-free also) for characters saving in game options would be really awesome. All of these services should have open API that would do the job :]
I would like this as well. I switch between two computers and would like to keep my progress from one game instead of playing two completely different games.
I would really appreciate if you would implement Steam Cloud. A second wish is to store the Savegames in da different folder than the gamefolder itself. Maybe My Doucments/My Games, like Terraria
There are a couple other threads about this. I personally have one. I'm throwing my name in the hat here, as it seems to be the most active thread on this topic.
