When I choose to buy a game, one of the first things I look at is the user reviews both just all positive, and then just all negative. I like seeing what the very best that can be said about a game, as well as the very worse. But I pay most attention to that little image here; the aggregation of all those comments.

There was some comments before that mentioned most reviews will be negative. However I have a firm belief that the masses are generally right. I have this same approach when I choose to watch an anime, by looking at their overall rating, rated by thousands of users. In all those anime I've watched I generally agree with the ratings given to them by the masses.

Also, "Everything leans towards negative reviews" can't explain stuff like:

However, it's true that this game is still in development whereas Terraria is already completed. Unfortunately, even with the Early Access warning, most Steam users treat it as a finished product. I expect this rating to change once Starbound is released, and given an extra buffer of a year or two for players to either update their reviews, or submit new ones.

However, I would still like to note, that if I never followed Starbound to begin with, the 68% negativity would be enough to sway me away.

  2. I highlighted an important word in that definition. One company/groups definition does not represent "every other company"

Thanks for posting picture evidence to back up your point, it helps.

I've "heard", it was a great time. Kind of like the Wild Wild West.

From what I understand, if a group of people made a concerted effort to spam a site, the victims of that offense would then band together and attack them.

But "attack" is such a pejorative word; maybe "retaliatory defense" would be better.

Of course, that all depended on how motivated people were to protect themselves.

Ah, so StarBound is a special snowflake then? Because generally 9 out of 10 companies would have labeled this as an Alpha, or a tech demo or a Proof of concept. Labeling this game as a beta when almost every part of it is a placeholder was a clear overstatement of their progress, how is this even controversial?

This really doesnt say much, though.
Many people buy stuff, play it a bit, and then drop it and do something else, be it finished games or early access titles.
An exception might be purely multiplayer games like Dota 2, LoL, or TF2.
I also havent really played SB in months, doesnt mean the game has lost popularity for me^^.

Come on, you *still* going on about this? Enough already, just accept that your definition differs from Chucklefish's definition of the word.

Hey, this stuff is great. Where did you find the overall percentages like that? I'd love to compare StarBound with a more well received Early Access program like DayZ or Wasteland 2.

It is the Enhanced Steam Plugin.

Meanwhile, Minecraft still isn't feature complete and it's all the way to release and beyond! Fancy that.

Either way, it's already been pointed out that this is an off topic semantics argument and requested that it be dropped.

Yesh. The argument has pretty much shown to go nowhere, neither side has said "Well I guess it is a beta" or "cripes, your right, it is an alpha/tech demo/prototype/proof of concept".

There are other aspects of why the game is view negatively on steam then just "it is an alpha with a beta tag on it." Let's move on to one of those so things can progress.

  11. Because you're being belligerent and insulting to try and get a mediocre point across? The point is, they have every right to say its a beta build, or pre-alpha, or it's in the "waffle-hamster" portion of development. It's their call. I'm sorry you disagree with an arbitrary label but I'm sure you'll get over it... or you won't.

    Overall Drop: Around 43%

How about Skyrim, since apparently people stop playing games fairly quickly this must be very low, right?: http://steamcharts.com/app/72850#All
    Peak players: 78,420
    Current Players: 32,557
    Overall Drop: Around 58%

StarBound isn't popular anyone, period. It went from the Steam top ten list all the way down to low sixties because of complete mismanagement by its developers.

  13. It looks like a lot of people got some things out of their system -- and for the most part the understanding and concerns regarding the negative reviews have been discussed, answered, debated, and (unfortunately) argued.

Locking her up. If you still want to argue or debate a point with someone -- take it to PM. :coffee:
