After watching the livestream,I noticed that the gameplay was very much,'I saw you first I hit you till you die'.The mobs would just rush towards the player and touch them to death.I thought that stealth mechanics should be implemented to make the game more interesting and add different approaches to combat.

1)Adding a visibility meter, which is affected by lighting, movement, stance and blocks cover.

2)Enemies should not just rush you to death. Some sort of sneak mode to approach enemies.

3)Adding assassinations where attacks deal increased damage but you must be unnoticed. As starbound can have towers and stuff, leaping down from a tower and backstabbing enemies appeals to me

4)Enemy AI tweaks.enemies would just be alerted when you approach them and only charge at you when you are infront of them.

These are just my opinions and feel free to add any suggestions to it.....

I heard this was previously a planned feature, but has since been removed.

It may later be added, but I personally feel stealth mechanics are strange in 2D games like Starbound or Terraria.

In 2D stealth games like Mark of the Ninja the environment is pre-developed with stealth mechanics in mind, allowing for places to hide and paths to flank the enemies with. In Starbound, the terrain is randomly generated and very open, so I don't think these mechanics could be implemented very well; nothing past line of sight aggression.

The only working "stealth" here could be an invisibility

Perhaps you can build some sort of ninja gear or something that's rather high tier where you can use energy to do like some kind of smoke bomb ability. The gear set could make you "harder to detect" by either simply making the detection radius of nearby enemies smaller for you.

Monsters can have different sight cones depending on the type of monster and/or the monster's specific head. IE: a monster with 20 eyes can see more than a 2 eyed monster. Monsters on the ground can see straight forward and a bit up whereas flying monsters can see forward and down. Monsters with an eye on it's tail can see backwards.

Weapons, monsters, falling objects, etc. can make noise which could attract nearby monsters to simply run over to it and if it sees you it attacks otherwise it leaves.

Low tier stealth could use a bow & arrow or a melee weapon from behind for silent kills. Maybe attacking unaware enemies applies a damage multiplier for a chance at stealth kills.

Mid tier stealth could use silenced weaponry or even something like poisonous darts.

High tier stealth could include the previously stated ninja armor and/or other gadgets that can provide temporary cover/invisibility, negates fall damage, wall climbing, etc.

A lot of these things could be used for more than just stealth kills as well, like simply having fun. Fall damage negatable boots could be used in jumping puzzles or something too.

Dude, totally agree with you! They NEED THIS!!! For a game that cries alive and immersion, not having this would kill me. You even need this in PVP but only by using cameo or being invisible or MAYBE Implement a awareness level of other players, like if they don't look your way, your harder to see. Like some how less visible to other players not noticing you as you crouch. Or blend in with the dark and loss your name. Also in addition, if you are in a close space in a room with no way for light to get in, you should not be able to see the outside like everything is dark until you have a window or something like that.

I think it would break immersion if other players are constantly fading in and out of sight every time I turn around.

That's just because the Yogscast player are fail gamers. Starbound's combat is actually focused on defending, dodging, baiting out attacks and counterattacking. It is all about maneuvering around your opponent and reacting to their moves, not rushing in and taking unnecessary damage.

I kind of wish sips wasn't there. If someone else played with them, perhaps a developer or someone from a different channel even, it would be much more fun to watch. Sips just doesn't take anything seriously. Shjin's adorable (and I found out from the stream for the first time he's quite manly) and he can play a good role as the "new player" in the experience. Duncan tried his best to keep the ball rolling so I'd give him some credit honestly. He also seemed to be interested in the game at least to the point where he understood the basics of showing off some of the stuff you can do.

I haven't been watching I49 all that much so I don't know if the following happened or not but: I think it would be better if they set up at least someone with a camera watching fans who played it there. But I agree with you about the Yogscast not doing a good job.

I'm no brit, but I can still call them wankers. :proper:

Watch the part where he uses up all of the medkits. I swear it was intentional.

Seriously, he was told that Q drops items, and he even did so by accident while holding a gun. He then goes on to use the left click instead, which he somehow confused with the Q key because...? IDK, maybe he forgot that the left click was to use an item, since it wasn't like he had been using all sorts of items before that during the previous whole hour. :sarcasm:

Or maybe it was just the pressure of the intense boss battle that was raging on inside the house. Maybe he'd have felt more safe if they went outside before trying to heal up. Yeah, that makes sense.

On top of that, Sjin comes and tries to give Duncan one of his medkits, but Sips ends up picking it up right before using ALL of them. At that moment, I swear I practically died from the suspense. It felt like some damn monkey just grabbed baby mario and ran off the screen with him. :monkey:

And that monkey's name was Sips.

Lets find the guy and beat him up! :viking: (Just kidding. I'm not evil.;) )

    Back to stealth mechanics.
When you said players would vanish in an out of sight, did you mean in PvP? If not I'm sure they would be translucent rather than completely invisible. At least for our eyes. But when I think about it, invisibility doesn't seem like it would work out all that well. It seems too much like magic if you ask me. But I think it would be cool if you can break down a bush or something and make some sort of camouflage where if you were in front of foliage and stood still creatures wouldn't be able to see you. Then if you had a silenced weapon or something, only the creature getting hurt would notice you.

But if you meant PvP then invisibility wouldn't work at all in my opinion, and stealth would be tricky too.

If it were up to me I say forget PvP. But my opinion is strongly biased so whatever.

I did. If you fade from other player's screens when you go stealth or if they are looking the other way, it would be pretty jarring in my opinion. Just imagine it: you are in a room facing away from the door, with the adjacent room clearly seen on your screen. Suddenly, the door opens by some unseen force. You turn around to face that direction and the enemy fades into vision just as he begins to stab your face.

Now imagine if you both had PvP on and he decided to start moving furniture around in your base. You'd see disappearing and reappearing furniture for no apparent reason. The more I think about this, the bigger my headache gets.

Anyway, they already have stealth. It's called using a sniper rifle to hit them from off-screen.

Guns that have a scope mod will allow you to pan the screen to the sides, so that you can see further than the normal range.

Of course, other than that it is just a normal gun and there aren't any head shots in Starbound.

In other words, you don't have to worry about instantly dying to enemies you had no chance of even seeing first. You might take the first hit, but then you can run for cover or put up your shield and charge forward. However, the player who uses a scoped weapon to get in the first hit will still have that advantage. It is a nice way to have some stealth without being over powered, but it doesn't really give you the same feel as back-stabbing enemies in melee.

Well, as I said, maybe clocking. You know I think that there needs to be a system as to where you can hide. Like maybe hide behind rocks, bushes, stuff like that.

What needs to be added is an item that you use and it changes your appearance into a grouping of blocks or maybe a bush(probably even a cardboard box, for fun!) I think it would be pretty fun to be able to recon an area disguised as a inconspicuous bush!
