Pause feature?

  1. Yes. I leave my computer sometimes and plan on coming back to the same game sometimes.

  2. No. I don't ever leave my computer or fall asleep playing games because I'm awesome.

Optional pause in single player sure thing... Just save us from pausing when alt tabing in other window.

We NEED a pause at the very least in Single Player. I hit escape a lot because I'm often interrupted when I'm playing and need to pause the game to answer the door or let the dog out or something. If I'm going to be away from the keyboard for more than a minute I need to exit Starbound completely sometimes loosing a lot of travel time if I'm deep underground or far away from my spawn point on a planet. I'd really like to be able to pause my game for a few minutes then take all that time to get back to where I was. It's seriously annoying not to have a simple ordinary pause in single player mode.

I can see not being able to pause on a multiplayer server as you can't pause everyone, but for single player not having a pause is kind of inexcusable considering just about every 8-bit Nintendo game I can think of back in the day had a simple pause feature.

I dispute that. Mining a single block is 2.5x as hunger intensive as walking a block, breaking excess blocks is more draining. And I've done math, the most block efficient way to mine is actually just straight tunnels, or at least tunnels spaced fairly far apart from each other. For efficiency you want to wrap it around a bit, to reduce the travel time to get places afterwards. I have mathed this extensively. Digging out 1-block side tunnels to check into the wall reduces efficiency.

Really? I could've sworn I've starved on my ship several times. Even recently.
I've actually done this a few times as well, just sucks for when I drift off unintentionally. Starbound has been keeping up too late. Haha.
    I'm sorry? I don't understand? Explain please.

Maybe I'm just seeing things - but it appears while sleeping, on my ship at least, that hunger either moves very very slowly or not at all. Never stuck around long enough to find out.

Ultimately - if you know you're going to leave the game long enough to starve to death, just quit the game. Its not the games fault you left it running...

I old days of Terraria there was an automatic pause when you alt tab. So the game could not work in the background. This is what we do not need here never ever. Pause must be optional, not turning on unless player pressed dedicated "pause" button.

I don't think we need a pause feature in single player. If you want to "pause", carry a bed around with you. Place down the bed, and then make a nice safe little bubble of dirt. Assuming you are on a temperate planet, you should be safe. You may also need to place a torch, or campfire, if you are somewhere that gets chilly at night.

Yes, because when real life demands attention, my first priority should be creating a campsite.

We are talking Vanilla minecraft right? If so strip-mining isn't the most effective way to mine at all, vertical mine shafts are. As you can see more around you, it's just more dangerous. That's neithier here nor there. If you stand still, you're losing less food mining,t hen if you walk forward with each block as well. My statment is 100% true, I never said you don't lose hunger while standing still if you're mining, I said you lose less. Which is completely true, and your mineshafts look more or less like strip mines, just done in a different fashion when you're done with this. Having played so much Vanilla the game is pitifully boring and easy to me, I'm glad you've done the math, I've done the in-game testing. o_O

While I normally bring along a tent, campfire and marshmallows for nighttime and occasions like these, I wouldn't mind if I could pause the game as well for reasons like what Mystify just said.

Vertical mineshafts give horrible diamond returns. Hunger is a silly thing to optimize for anyways.
While you will lose less hunger per unit of time, you will get less resources per unit of hunger, and less resources per unit of time, and less resources per use of your pick.
I have done in game testing too. It matched my math nearly exactly, which is easily explained by the random variance.

When the offline world wants your attention, you should balance that against the few seconds it takes to put down a bed, spray up a dirt wall, and maybe set up a campfire/torch.

If it is urgent enough that you cannot take a few seconds to do that, then the game has lost the match of attention and your character deserves what it gets.

Perhaps there should be a carebear mode for people that don't like the difficulty curve, and want things like "pause", cheaper fuel, and the like.

I think you can not die on your ship anymore even from starving since one of the recent updates changed it so your character could not die on your ship, but you had to create a new character after the recent player wipe for that to take affect. That is, if you created your new character after the wipe but before the update that made the change, it did not affect your current character.

PS, your food bar will still go down to nothing but my health bar never dropped and the beeping stayed going until I ate some food.

If you're going for just diamonds, then hunger and effecient mining fall apart, every seed spawns with an algorithim in it that will yield an exact number of diamonds in the same spot of every chunk, or roughly therein. This may have changed recently, but I haven't seriously played Minecraft since 1.5.X

Everyone wants a difficulty slider, the "hardcore" people the "casuals" and everyone in between, it's the only way to satisfy all parties sadly, or at least most of the parties.

I would love to see a save feature. Or even better, for the game not to beam you back to your ship when you quit, but rather you return to your previous position.

I've gone away for my computer for hours and didn't die from starvation as long as I was on my ship. The second you port to a planet you die, but I don't think starvation will kill you on ship.

Nothing sad about it as it is perfectly logical that some people want to walk through a field of wild flowers and eat marshmallows, while others want to walk through a field of burning marshmallows and eat bee-infested flowers.

To each their own, and hopefully as the beta buds further, we'll get a chance to have our cake and eat it as well.

I know this is cheating but I hate the Hunger feature, so I reduced the "foodDepletionRate" in the "player.config" file. It only works for single player.

I can at least do other things in game beside obsess over having enough food to keep my toon's belly full. :)

You think pause is an easy mode feature?

Okay. I don't think you know what you're talking about. You've been playing too much Dark Souls.

Pause is already going to be implemented apparently, so trying to say it's a bad thing in anyway is silly.

You know you could just play your silly hard mode by choosing never to pause. At least give some of us the simple choice.

Pause, beaming down, FTL travel, eating, and being able to save are all easy mode features.

Already mentioned, so I'm not really sure why you're bringing such silliness back up. That'd be another thing in easy mode only, of course.
