I think that at some point before the final release of the game, Chucklefish should implement a class system that dictates your starter weapons and possibly also armor, that way it's not just like "Oh here you go buddy a sword...your on your own in the universe so good luck!"
I'm thinking there could be Seven Classes
    Crusher 1 2-HMelee
    Berzerker 2 1-h melee
    Warrior 1-h Melee Shield
    Spec ops 1 1-h melee 1 1-h ranged
    Riot Control 1-h ranged shield
    Bounty Hunter 2 1-h ranged
    Infantry 1 2-H Ranged

    Any thoughts or input?

I disagree, although randomizing your starting items might be interesting. Perhaps make it an attribute of the difficulty level, as well?

    Special ops sounds pretty overpowered.

I really don't like classes in a sandbox game, it's to limiting for such a grand game.

    Pie4Pigs and Mansen like this.

Could make for a pretty decent RPG-esque mod.

I disagree with this lol. I think difficulty should be set so one cannot just simply get all the way to endgame.

I like this though....randomization is always fun!

Classes will affect nothing but your starting weapons and maybe clothes...did you even read my post? It is giving you more options in the beginning instead of just slapping you with a sword and throwing you onto some planet.

So then the game will have to be fairly easy, otherwise you'll have countless people cluttering the forums demanding/begging that the game be made easier.

Variable difficulty allows everyone to have their cake, and to eat it as well. Or wear it, depending on the person.

Indeed, it'd be more fitting with the game's design.

THIS, I don't agree adding classes, it it a sandbox game after all, but a mod about it should be pretty easy to make.

Excuse me but you forgot a bow based class, "cough, cough".

Back on topic, it is not a good system for a sandbox game like Starbound, nor needed, you can craft desired weapons fairly early, and acquire guns later on.

People will complain regardless of what one does. They will always find a subject.

You're the second person to say no because it's a sandbox....Maybe that is legitly a thing.... How about if we don't call it classes and just call it picking your starting weapons?

Lol I'm sorry but I don't think bows are viable at this point...

Yeah I guess that's true...but we want guns to start! This is the future lol....Gimme a bb gun at least :p

Given that logic, why balance anything?

    Fair enough.

Indeed, although thankfully modifications can smooth out the difficulty curve when needed.

O well, picking starting weapons is different from picking a starting class you see? Why not bows? Can be a high-tech bow, maybe shoot energy arrows to compensate for bullets. Bows take more skill than guns IRL, if you ask me of course.

Alright everybody! Forget about making starbound balanced! In the first 5 sectors it will be easy mode! last 5 sectors...HARD MODE! The not so skilled players as myself will never make it past sector 6, whereas those who are space ballers will beat everything and have gangster lasers and whatnots.

Well yeah, but as stated in my OP it only affects starting weapons and possibly (starting) armor....
That would be awesome! Like Chewies Energy Crossbow! Yeah bows are difficult @_@

That's my point, exactly. Balanced for you is likely not the same as balanced for me. That's the reason difficulty modes are used.

If all classes do is determine your starter equipment, we could just as easily start players with a 2H, 1H, Gun, and Shield in their locker and call it good.

Nice suggestion, but it's obvious starbound will not have a class system.

No i would not like that either, it could run into the problem that one weapon is stronger than the others, and you either way get a new weapon relatively quick.
