It could simply start before your planet was destroyed, and then the attack would begin, you would grab a weapon (You will be able to choose between a sword and a shield, or a plasma gun), and then you would proceed to evacuation ships, and then the game really starts.
Thanks They could also give you "sort of a backstory". Miner - Hardhat with Lamp, Lowlevel Mining Laser Prospector - Laser Revolver, Sonic Pickaxe Raider - Hockey Mask, Buckler, Hatchet Ex-Fleet Officer - Phase Pistol, Uniform Ex-Spacepatrol - Plasma Carbine, Helmet Rebel - Rebel Rifle, Bandana Space Hobo - Bottle o' Scrumpy, Ragged Clothes etc (These items should of either not be able to picked up by anyone else or worth nothing/be really crappy to prevent farming by constantly creating new characters)
Interesting, I love this idea. The first level is you trying to run away from the enemy attack and running for your life towards a space shuttle where there are guns. In the background, you'll see your world getting attacked, a-la SNES games!
Maybe the player should start with both, it would give them the chance to experiment with basic fighting styles and master the game earlier, or at least master the fighting styles.
Im actually hoping you start with nothing, and you could just beat the snot out of people with your fists. Then maybe you can craft a pointy stick out of wood.
I love it! If only it had some kind of specialness to it that makes people want to keep it Otherwise it's really epic! Keep 'em coming! I like the idea, it seems fresh and new! ~ Thank You! John Devince
Yeah, kind of like when you choose a starter Pokémon, this could be the same thing. Heh, Flamethrower, Waterthrower and Grassthrower =P
xD. I mean like you can choose from a sword, a gun, and axe, a hammer? Or how about a crossbow that shoots exploding birds xD
You need a knife to carve said pointy stick, and while I'm at it I'd rather just stick 'em with the blade. Many woodsman never go anywhere without a pocket knife at the least and they are often included in some form in emergency kits. Hell military Strykers have Tomahawks for self-defense and for chopping through sheet-metal or glass in case of a crash.
Never really gave this any thought, though it is an interesting topic this seems like the most logical way to go
Seems as if the suggestion part of the forum is my primary home Ok but seriously here's what i imagine could play out well. Does anyone remember/know "Star Ocean - The second Story". For those who don't. You started with some plasma gun that did a great deal of damage, but you stranded on an unknown planet, far far away from home and shortly after getting there and some fights later it got drained of it's power and you had to make some kind of weapon for defence...guess what...a simple sword. From this point you worked your way up. So basicly the plasma weapon was for introduction and as a symbol that you are from the future with advanced tech but wasn't able to recharge it in a far away place. I find it rather brilliant to introduce a way of giving your main character a cheap weapon. Fit's perfectly and is a good way of telling the player why he suddenly isn't that powerfull although he is from an advance civilization. Something similar should be done for Starbound to make some sort of interessting story that explains why the player starts low and isn't wielding super destructive weapons from the start.
A metal sword (made of such an unspectacular metal as to be undefined) or a pistol and some ammo. Then you go out and do something. Maybe both.
I'm ok with giving the player a starter pack but it should include basic ranged, melee, shield and armor, instead of a "class" pack. Would be even better if it has a tutorial level that show the new player how each play style works. Setting fixed class sets may give a certain depth to your character, but it kinda defeats the point of freedom Starbound seems to be aiming for.
No. i think you shouldnt have a starter weapon. you would go on an escape pod on a hurry so really you shouldn't start with a starter weapon. if you did then you should get like a butcher knife, machete or baseball bat etc. and they would have random buffs like terraria like sharpened butcher knife, blunt machete, polished baseball bat. if you start with a laser revolver or whatever you can survive without spending time on making weapons. but you would start with a bad weapon, like you were trying to go in a hurry and grab the first thing you see for defense.
Not so fast, my fluffy friend! Recall that weapons tend to use ammo. If you had a plasma pistol, you would have until the energy ran out to find some gear to replace it. As for a plasma sword? I think you'll be forced to use a melee weapon after your blaster runs out, so no problems. In-game coding could also have it that your weapon was broken upon crashing or reposessed when you landed, depending on how the game starts.
