First off, before you start reading, this isn't a bashing thread. Yes I have some questions and will say things not everyone agrees with, but I still think the game looks pretty cool.

Down to business, the weapons. I've been watching a few streams now and the weapons that have been used so far and I'll be blunt. The weapons I've seen in the streams and videos seem like the exact same generic weapons albeit randomly generated with different levels of damage. I could be wrong, but from the weapons I saw there was really only a few categories, and the fact that the "weapons" section of the roadmap is almost 100% doesn't reassure me any.

I mean they look great, but I personally was hoping that there would be things like Plasma whips, or Spike cannons, liquid nitrogen spritzers, ect.

Basically, I think that the weapons were pretty generic "Here's your assault rifle, shotgun, and rocket launcher, go kill stuff" I'm still giving the benefit of the doubt and thinking that's a fraction of the weapons, but I'm a bit concerned.

Here's a poll to see how everyone else feels. Again, not bashing the game.

  3. Idk man, the weaps looked pretty B.A. to me, also who's to say they're not holding out on weapons? They don't seem to like to share EVERYTHING with the community, which I respect. Maybe they're trying to keep certain gameplay aspects fresh which is why they only show us little tid bits.

I wouldn't read too far into the only few snippets of the game you've seen.

Well, of course they're not going to show you the coolest stuff. That's for you to find out for yourself. I was a bit bored by the character outfits until the Easter Eggs started popping up and the races were shown with really cool accessories. Then I realized why things seemed so boring; most of this was beginning-of-the-game content. Of course not everything looks amazing right away; if it did, you wouldn't want to go hunt for armor and cosmetic items and things like that.

I imagine weapons are along the same line; there's the common stuff you get at the beginning, and then the really cool stuff you have to earn. Of course, the random generation adds a bit of variety, but that doesn't mean the overall quality isn't going to get better as you progress through the game.

  5. Far I saw till now, they really could be better. Not only in the Weapon aspect itself... IT'S EFFECT, Projectiles, are really generic.
They aren't like Terraria, some weapons with unique effects and types of attack.

I guess that's the problem of no magic stuff in Starbound. It becomes Generic, still there is potential and I hope there's unique stuff to show us or to we find when the game is out.

I think they've gotten a great start, but coding things like plasma whips and liquid nitrogen spritzers would take a lot longer than re-skinning a shotgun or plasma rifle. I know they have a billion other things to do before this game gets released, so I'm hoping they address this with a post-release update and add some weapon classes.

By the way, plasma whip and liquid nitrogen spritzers are both things I now want in real life. Christmas is going to be disappointing.

They've probably executed their ideas better than I could have. I'm not sure if they have fun gadget-y styled stuff sci-fi guns could do some crazy *. Take R&C and their Morphing Gun or Plasma whip. Now a Plasma Whip that'd be awesome.

Let's see what people come up with for that crazy pre-order bonus. I might just design a weapon for the lolz one day when I get bored. Would be good since I'm doing Creative Media Production anyway and I gotta make concept art and stuff... Fun!

They're not showing us everything. I'm expecting mothafuckin' Energy Swords. Watch. It'll happen.

  9. I hope so, I want that JEDI Stuff, Lightsabers? And Rainbow weapons (rainbow ore in), the Rainbow Bow of Terraria was EPIC, the lighting effects just awesome. If there isn't anything like that, as Terraria had It's... Madness.

It's hard to vote honestly. (I didn't ) Mostly because we haven't seen all the game has to offer. So far we've seen alot of run of the mill stuff. No doubt about that. I'll wait to judge the weapons until I can see more of them. Then again. I'm not a big gun fan, or ranged weapons to be honest. So My judgement will be pretty harsh on those two aspects. I am a melee sorta guy, we'll see if they have enough cool and varied melee weapons to keep me amused and interested. :)

  12. Yes it's really hard to vote, for me far I saw in videos, it's there is variety of visuals, and types of projectiles, but when the question comes to an really Unique.... eh...
Since what we saw, surely isn't final/only that, we can't make any Fair vote, for now.

I would have liked an official Laser Gun that shoots in a constant stream. Also, the amount of weapons that had the splitting property really annoyed me, kind of like it was the only mod they had and it didn't seem as pratical as some other mods I could think of.
Other than that they could have actually been bad weapons, and if the mod is a problem i'm preety sure I could just take the splitting function off :)

I don't get how people are already judging the game by just seeing bits and pieces of it.

how do you not get it

its pretty simple seeing as we have nothing better to do and need something to talk about

why is it we're not allowed to discuss Starbound opinions until it's fully released

We can only judge by what we saw, but I guess we know how non-final everything is

As said above, Tiy spawns the weapons for the streams, meaning that only a very particular type actually show up.

I was just kind of like 'ehn', but that's not necessarily bad since I'm very hard to impress and have seen a lot of different kinds of weapons over my time playing video games. There are a LOT of different weapons, but the best are those that are made from the game itself. For example, Command and Conquer's 'Telsa Trooper' which took lightning towers, then made them into units that could shoot lightning or power those lightning towers. A very unique thing for it's time.

I don't think there are any good choices in your poll:

Your poll equates familiarity with bad and originality with good. I personally don't like over-the-top, ridiculous weapons. In Terraria I always thought the magic weapons and stuff like the megashark were overly silly and kind of stupid. I mean, I can't think of any other game that had a weapon like the megashark. That would make it a unique weapon, but does it make it a good weapon? I don't think so. I liked the look of the shotgun and clockwork assault riffle much better---which are fairly similar to weapons in other games. I really don't like weapons that have a bunch of unnecessary parts and features that exist solely to make them look "cool". A sword is really just a sharpen piece of metal attached to a handle, and that is what it should look like. If it looked like a dragon or a falling star or anything other than a what it is, it would be absurd. Plausibility is key so far as I'm concerned. The meat cleaver type weapon Tiy was using in PvP video didn't stand out as a unique weapon, but it's pretty damn "cool" looking in my opinion---simple in design, purpose, and intention, a mean looking, bone cleaving, flesh destroying blade.

That being said, there is plenty of room for interesting weapons that have a Sci-Fi feel to them, and I seriously doubt that they have shown us all of the neat weapons in the game.

Back, I kind of had to abandon the thread and it was hastily typed in 5 minutes, on account of the need to leave shortly after it was posted.

Thanks for everyone's input, I half expected them to be holding out on weapons, but I was a bit unclear.

The poll is asking if the weapons are unique or not, not necessarily saying that unique = good. I like shotguns as much as the next guy, and I agree that a half shark half machinegun is a bit too much, but as long as we have a wide range of options, everyone is happy. I can't agree with all of your post, but you make some excellent points. I think that the key here is to get a fine balance between normal weaponry, to keep the game from becoming one of those games where nobody takes it seriously, but yet have a wide range of unique weapons that keep people's interest.

If they can achieve this (Which judging by the info I got from this thread they will) then they can create a game that everyone can enjoy.

All I want is a weapon that shoots something other than bullets, if I can have that I'm happy. Once again, thanks for everyone's feedback
