The one downside of Shockhopper is that with a grapple/rope, you can take him out with literally any 1-handed ranged weapon. Just grapple into the top left corner and he can't hit you.

Yeah, I guess I was thinking more of games that are somewhat open-ended in terms of how you play them, much less actual sandbox games. A game where there is only one way to complete it, really ends up dealing with this problem by design. Games that let you finish/advance through them them in a variety ways always have this issue with becoming trivial due to mix maxing etc. One solution is play them blind when possible I guess.

This game has never been hard fighting monsters game, it's been a fun space exploration game , I don't see how you to expect things to be hard when they are just monsters and random villagers, we find legendary weapons, craft legendary armor and guns, we literally defy space and time and travel across the universe, we can manipulate water, earth, poison, LAVA, we can build worlds or destroy them and all those poor NPCs are equipped with is normal guns and swords. The mission fights aren't meant to be extremely hard they are meant to steal there Tech so we can explore further inventions/deeper into space, and they are quite fun going through. This game isn't about making the fight harder it's about mapping the galaxy and finding differnent items/planets/biomes/tomes, building homes, or like I said destroying them, with the new 1.0 patch exploring in-depth dungeons. You choose your path in this game but if you build/craft the available items you are a God to basically everything, so if anything use basic gear and swords and armor so you're on there level. If all else fails they should add pvp so you can fight me and not those poor NPCs, because I won't go down that easy. c:<

God forbid someone who only has time to pick up a game once a week or month wants to enjoy it. I've gotten to the point where I just want to have fun playing a game. Dying over and over and losing crap is not fun to me. It's not a challenge, it's a chore. This is why I don't play games like Dark Souls or competitive games.
As it turns out, there are games for people like me and Starbound is one of them.

Sometimes I just want to build a glass castle on a flower planet and fill it with gay rainbow robot warriors, man. Let us live. If you want to go join a competitive circlejerk for another game, go for it. Don't try to bring that mentality to something people already enjoy.

No one ever said that you can't do that?

We're talking about a game that has a whole universe to explore. Why can't there be planets that are for those that seek a challenge in coexistence to your glass castle? No one ever said that you HAVE to walk the hard path , you can stay with your soft gameplay, no one's forcing you, BUT it's just a thing that there are some that like a challenge and this challenge isn't available at the moment.

It isn't like people are asking for the game's difficulty to be raised in all areas, just have something for the crowd that enjoy games like Dark Souls or more competitive games. If you take a look at MMOs, they tend to have content for every type of player.

Taking Final Fantasy XIV as an example (since it is the only MMO I play at the moment), the game's PvE content can be generalized and separated into 3 levels:

    • Hardcore: World First 8-Man Raid Clears - Just what it sounds like, racing to clear the new raid content first. The people who attempt this are competitive and are the best of the best.
    • Midcore: 24-Man Raids, Extreme Trials, 8-Man clears at a leisurely rate - The 24-man raids are easier than the 8-man raids but still include a certain level of mechanics and coordination greater than dungeons. The Extreme Trials are a singular boss fight with plenty of mechanics and require plenty of coordination but are still not as difficult (for the most part) as the 8-Man Raids. While obtaining the World First Clears for 8-Man raids is designed for the hardcore crowd, clearing them at a more leisurely pace, slowly learning the ins and outs of the raid and progressing further with each attempt, is something the Midcore Players can do quite easily (except for A3S, that just broke so many people).
    • Everyone Else: Everything else, story quests, dungeons, non-Extreme difficulty trials, side quests, etc. (I am not counting crafting or gathering in this, because I don't consider it PvE content but rather its own thing.)
The majority of the content is in the Everything Else section, since it contains the most players, not only because Midcore and Hardcore players are almost always going to be a sort of minority, but because Midcore and Hardcore players are also counted in the player base for that content. However, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be content for the Midcore and Hardcore, SE does make sure to give content specifically for them (whether or not they give enough is another topic for debate).

There is no reason why Starbound can't so something similar and have the majority of the game at the current difficulty, letting you build in peace but have those areas where the game's difficulty spikes up and of course give those players some nice rewards for their efforts, rewards that help them progress in more difficult content (and/or trophies, having trophies to display is nice for some players). A game doesn't have to be solely designed for a singular mentality, in fact, it is generally better game design for it to be made for multiple mentalities as it tends to add more depth to the game.

No need to call it a circlejerk either.

I like how they made the survival mode with hunger and tougher night creatures. It's a big step towards Koala-like survivalism.

Hmmm. I haven't played the game for awhile. I tried the unstable, seeing that the release is soon. One again the game practically had me in tears. It doesn't consider older players with slow responses. Found the outpost, quest for dash? Obstacle course, pressing "E" then double tapping "A" is ridiculous, then going back to the beginning every time you fail? I wish I could play the original game again. As it is I will stay on the first planet and farm.

Well, there are going to be outliers who won't be able to handle some things due to age or disabilities, not much you can really do. They can't really set the bar too low without making the game too easy for the majority of their players. Video games that operate in real time tend to require reflexes and decent response times as it is supposed to challenge those areas. For the base difficulty, they have to consider the majority of their player base.

Like I can't really say much since I don't have issues with my response times, so I can't put myself in your shoes—can't really do it when I have no idea what it is like. The best I guess you could do is to get it down to muscle memory rather than response times, maybe set up some macros, or have someone do that part for you. It's just a sad and unfortunate truth.

I am guessing you don't have a 3 button mouse... Meaning button 3 would be scroll wheel button; at least the one I have. Middle mouse button acts as E for me. Can't expect everyone though to have it since it is on multiple OS. I found those tech gaining level a little tricky, especially that one you mentioned.

I don't use dash really all that much, and it usually gets me into danger more than helps. >< (Now only if there is a way to turn that thing off. Didn't spend too much time looking, but didn't see a way.)
I can understand why some would have trouble it the E key is only they have. Have you tried rebinding to like a further away key or something more comfortable? Most keys are rebindable.

I think my experience of the game is that it hasn't been too difficult or too easy through out the many versions I played. I am not so well at the combat, but I do my best. Not as decent as I use to be anyway. More into the building aspect anyhow; which means I have been spending most my time with the lovely little colony system and farming mostly. :nurutease:
