As of the current nightly build there are three difficulty modes: Casual, Normal, and Hardcore.

    Casual mode eliminates ore-drop-on-death.

That sounds great. Glad Tiy and Co. put that in and settled the whole to do.

Can you tell us more about the remaining 2 difficulty modes (normal and hardcore)?

Well here's hoping for the stable build t have character wipes then, because all my characters are on normal difficulty and seriously, screw ore-drops-on-death... even though I intend on abusing the hell out of farmable ores.

Personally, I'll be starting a new character, even if there will be no world/char/ship wipe after the update...

Besides, it's not like a whole bunch of people were saying to make ore-drop-on-death an optional setting like permadeath for months now! Jesus, Tiy's a good artist, but he just digs his heels in and he's trying to make this game all super hard on normal and crap. I've got Call of Pripyat and Demon's Souls/Dark Souls if I want a nice challenging game that kicks me in the balls for screwing up.

So I see no reason why I should rejoice at all. Being told I'm a casual for not wanting to lose finite resources when starting out is hardly a casual thing and oh my god you do not have any idea how often I have to backspace the amount of profanity I'm constantly putting into this post.

I don't think you should take the word "Casual" offensively, at least in this context.

It makes sense. If you want to play casually, you don't want to worry about losing resources. You just want to have fun.

Well, there's a considerable amount of changes coming in the update, so even if our ships did make it in one piece, the character would be plain overpowered anyway, which is why I'm starting anew myself. (Will have to see if My pre and post weapon aiming combo still exists though, that was beautiful.)

There's nothing wrong with playing a game on an lower difficulty setting.

You can have fun without the risk of losing resources, it's called Normal as it is on the current stable build. Casual is like, regenerating health, no fatal fall damage, lava just slaps you with burn and not melting, no meteors, no oxygen, that crap right there is casual.

Why put in so many complexities for a lower difficulty when you can just change what drops upon death? Its much more effective.

Am i the only person who gets a kick of people saying starbound is as hard as dark souls?
Have any of these people played dark souls?

  13. Starbound; It's like Dark Souls... in space!

I would love to see a Dark Souls difficulty option. Just to see the pure horror on the faces of players who opt into it.

Lemme check my PS3 achievements... yup, Dark Lord ending achievement, the Titanite Slab upgrade achievement. Yeah, I got a good idea of what Dark Souls is, and the ore-drop on death trying to be like getting your bloodstain back doesn't even translate. DkS has handcrafted levels that are semi-linear with open paths that loop via shortcuts, and you usually know the exact spot where your bloodstain is and can get to it (bar falling to your death in some spots during the Iron Golem fight) if you survive the trek. Starbound has huge worlds that are for the most part, procedurally generated, no mini-map to compensate, not even a device to map things out that gets more detailed the more it's upgraded, like the tiers of detectors in Call of Pripyat where the bottom tier just beeps and lights up in the general direction and the top tier is super-freaking detailed for both artifacts and anamolies. Tracking down the spot where you have to collect your ore is at best, time-consuming and boring, and at worst, mind-numbingly tedious because it was in one of several caverns far away from your spawn point.

Also, invaders in DeS/DkS can't steal your bloodstain like PvPers can gank your dropped ore and bars, so I see even less people willing to engage in servers that aren't full of people they absolutely trust.

It'll need more old crones. How good is the team on adding in old crones?

    Praise the Kluex!

But yeah, I also believe its not like the souls series, having played Demon's Souls, myself.

I certainly don't feel the need to tweak my stat build or regain humanity.

    According to the descriptions:

    Casual: lose pixels on death
Normal: Drop all items on death (they still are recoverable)
    Hardcore: Permadeath.

So essentially the way it is in the current stable, but the names have been changed. Except for hunger. No changes yet with hunger, but according to Molly, hunger will be added for the normal/hardcore modes.

I'm not sure how I feel about that... especially if THIS is true:
Why can't normal just be a pixel loss? I really don't want to lose my items every time I die, but I also don't want all the hazards and challenges removed for me...

All items on normal are dropped, not just resources?! Jesus take the wheel, man, that crappy idea had better be able to be countered via mods because losing all items on death? Oh yeah, ain't no one gonna go to any planets with meteors or even touch PvP on multiplayer ever again. Magma planets, planets with lava sub-biomes, etc, I just don't see people going to if it means there's a risk of losing all their items on death. I had enough of that garbage on Everquest back when Necromancers and Monks were the only classes that could handle corpse runs due to pets and Feign Death skill respectively.
