The correct sentence would be "You can use the reply button to quote people if necessary", unless you try to be as haughty and unpleasant than possible. Although in that case you could add a comma between "people" and "right" to sound even more of these two.

Just posting that for the sake of being informative.

Since this is an incredibly easy way to make a giant wall of text, I'm going to keep this as simple as possible (most likely won't be keeping that promise).

There are really millions (not a space reference) of ways that that Starbound is not anything the same. First, it isn't even made by the same people (one person doesn't count, it's a different company), second it actually is a different style of graphics, the hair styles look smoother, the armor is completely different too. Another thing, this game isn't boss after boss fights, it's more into exploration and such. There will be more than one world to go to with a creative kind of mode (haven't really looked into director mode, I won't go into detail here). The worlds will be circular instead of just a giant rectangle. This is futuristic and Terraria was kind of medieval-pre modern, which could make people think this is a sequel. This game also has realistic water instead of blocky water that moves correctly in some way. Another thing, on the topic of water, as shown, you will be able to swim. On to the topic of the videos. The dynamic lighting video showed that there will be amazing lighting in this game instead of a circular torch light, another lighting thing, you will be able to have a flashlight instead of only torches and glowsticks. I think that I already said everything about the water, going to skip that one. On to released news and pictures. The pictures they have shown would be the randomized creatures and weapons.

All of the stuff after the water is mostly about how Starbound is different and not about how Terraria was different (meaning that how it changed and not what they took out).

So you think that Starbound is more like the left image, but want it to be more like the right image? I see your point differentiating between visual fidelity and style. You are correct. However, I don't see where Starbound has sacrificed visual fidelity. All of the sprites that we have seen have been massively enlarged. like this one. and these...
If I were to take the sprites above on the right and blow them up like we see in the previous links, then they would have low visual fidelity too.

When I played Terraria it was no doubt a great game that had challenging enemies to begin with but after I played it for a week+ hardcore style I felt kind of bored. I had all the best stuff basically and it just wasn't a challenge anymore, I also had nothing to do, running into the same enemies over and over who died in one shot, farming bosses. A terrible inventory & chest system, no matter how many times i'd say 'This chest will be for potions only' It would end up cluttered with cobwebs, seeds etc.
Starbound is basically what I wanted Terraria to be and funnily enough I wanted to explore space in Terraria. And of ALL the features I absolutely love the fact characters can just run up some blocks instead of that pesky jumping!!!

I'd like to say that Starbound does strike me as a sequal. My question is why is this a bad thing? Terraria has nothing but a good reputation (barring the cease of updating, but if this is the reason it's a damn good one) and Starbound should be proud to have that title, given in error or not. Let's look at what a sequal usually is. A game modeled somewhat after the predecessor with the same things that people loved about it, while expanding on things the old did not have or possibly did not think to have. That sounds like starbound to me. Instead of a world, we now have whole planets. Now we have vehicles, more advanced weapons and tools, better art styling, better physics, more everything. If you hear someone say SB is a sequal, and your first instinct is to come back with something on the lines of "But now we have..." Then you are pretty much saying yeah, it's a sequal. Starbound brings MUCH more to the table. It's an improvement in just about every way imaginable. Plus i believe it's safe to say if you liked terraria you would love starbound. It also helps that most or all of the developers (i don't follow developers closely) for terraria are making starbound. It would be more accurate to call starbound a successor rather than a sequal, but the latter is often used for the former anyhow.

In the end, my point is if people want to call Starbound a sequal then let them. In the case of Terraria it is far from a bad thing.

This is actually incorrect, Tiy is the only carry-over and he simply did some art for Terraria, hes not even the main artist for Starbound now I don't think. not to be rude, just wanted to clarify.

    So. much. THIS.

I cannot count how many times me or one of my friends remarked on how annoying it was to climb hills in Terraria, then you have Minecraft where the blocks were a bit big anyways, so basically every game similar to Starbound in recent years you had to jump to get up 1:1 hills.

Starbound has surprisingly many people working on it considering that it's an indie game.
Also that page doesn't even list everybody!
For example some of the awesome people who made music for Homestuck are making music for Starbound. :)
Anyway as you can see only Tiy is from Terraria. (...And he's the lead dev this time!)

Redigit holds the rights to Terraria, so it'd actually be infringement to call Starbound a sequel.
The influence is obvious though. :p

In case you are curious about what Redigit does these days he's actually working on something.
It'll probably be a long time before we know what it is.
He probably wants to avoid leaks at any cost after what happened to him the last time.

I would argue it is more convenient that typing the opening/closing quote tags every time, but I guess you would disagree. So even though might not bring you any convenience, it does help other people by
    a) letting them know who you're quoting
    b) providing a link back to the post you quoted

The fact that that is a game from 1991 is to be taken into consideration. Starbound's actual look is closer to the one on the right. The point I was making is that you could make starbound's sprites 4000x4000 pixels and it would look marginally better while keeping the same aesthetic.

  14. Zellman

    Zellman Existential Complex

Some of the greatest games in the world have 1991 graphics. Sure the Starbound devs could add more pixels. They have added more detail than Terraria had, but what would be the point. I think you would rapidly hit a point of diminishing returns on fidelity, and personally I think the game would lose some of its charm. I actually would be less interested in Starbound if it had "better" graphics like Valley Without Wind, or Edge of Space.

    Here's a few more thoughts:
@Tobias: Starbound doesn't need better graphics to make it a good game. Although you are right in the fact that it would be nice if they were able to, while still keeping the same aesthetic(pretty hard/time consuming).
To everyone else/creator of the thread:
Starbound does in fact strike me as very similar to Terraria. And we shouldn't freak out about it. Just because it looks like it doesn't mean it is, and as far as I know, no one has made that mistake so far.
In my opinion contrary to what the original post may say, Starbound and Terraria have a lot in common. I don't think that's anything to freak out over. But as she said, its no sequel.
A better question is why do we have another thread like this? I ask for a recent example of people saying Starbound and Terraria are in any way related in that manner.
I think what you really meant to say is:
People are mistaking Starbound's aesthetic as being somehow related to Terraria.
    Thats because it IS.
I agree with one thing. Starbound is no sequel. But we don't need to say that over and over again. It seems we are a pretty intelligent community. Lets not insult that by asking people to list ways Starbound is different than another game. There's no point to it, because its so obvious that it isn't. And I am not trying to be mean here. I just hate that we even need another thread like this. Its like asking whether Indiana Jones is a prequel to Star Wars. Same "dev". Not a whole lot else. I don't see a reason to beat a dead horse here. But I personally don't think people have made this mistake, but I also don't think you explained very well what you wanted to say.

the starbound's sprites are bigger than terrarias, i was talking to some devs on irc and they said that the character is 4 blocks tall, and the blocks are bigger than terrarias

I actually LOVE the AVWW graphics. A lot of people seem to think it's ugly, but the clean crisp HD look is music to my eyes. The combination of the graphics and the procedurally generated world and items was what sold that for me. It's kind of a shame they're now overhauling the look of the game, but the upside is they're also redoing the animations to be a lot smoother.

It's a perfect example of an old style game with good modern visuals while retaining a retro aesthetic.

It's not like we're overflowing with discussion topics on these forums. The only other ones are crap like that "what guns will you use most" thread that are exactly as pointless as this topic because we don't know what kinds of guns are actually going to be in the game or how they will perform.

We have way too many of these: "Why compare Starbound/Terraria" (If you need me to post the links I will) We even have one stickied.
I wasn't attacking your statements. Just saying they are a bit off topic. If we need a "Change the graphics" thread then make one.
I do have to disagree though. We have screenshots of the guns. And a general idea of how they work (Look in the list of announced game information). Just like we have a general idea of how the aesthetic will be.
