Starbound vs Terraria? Not exactly... (I hope)

So it's pretty obvious from the way that the fanbase is accumulating and the way that things are going that there's going to be a bit of a rivalry between Starbound and Terraria. We're all wondering how Starbound will stand up to Terraria... but I'm gonna call it now: It won't. I'm not saying it will flop against Terraria, I'm saying it won't try to be like Terraria, and so neither will really be "better." Everyone will have their favorites no doubt but you don't have to have an exclusive fandom for one game while hating the other. Much like how Terraria made an effort to be different from Minecraft, Starbound will try to be different from Terraria.

See, I like Starbound's idea of procedurally generating almost everything about each planet, from the monsters to the terrain. However, for everything that it gains from this total randomization there's also going to be some loss. When you play Terraria, every enemy and every boss is thought out and designed to do its own thing. This means that you might get the same thing twice, but it also means that the experience is more tailor-made to suit the individual. Starbound won't have that advantage, but it'll have the advantage of increased variety and endless replay value. So while you might have tons and tons of awesome and unique discoveries, you might not ever have a comparable experience to your first fight against The Wall of Flesh or your first venture into The End.

Starbound shouldn't try to correct this difference, it should embrace it. Make it a cacophony of emergence with all sorts of enemy traits that might flop when put together but ensure that every world plays differently. Bosses, if they exist, should mix up patterns and shapes and sizes and difficulties. If the devs try to make just a few tailor-made enemy and boss types then the only variety will be in graphics and drops and the replay value will suffer quickly. Just thought I'd throw that out there, hope you understand.

I don't think Starbound will want to create some rivalry with Terraria, it's diferent games. And anyway, Terraria is "dead" in terms of being produced, so, I don't understand it having some rivalry.

Still, there's always the side which will see Starbound as a threat to Terraria, just like minecrafters seen Terraria as a threat to Minecraft, and this will create an unintentional rivalry.

All I know is that Terraria won't be having any more updates, I felt the world was big yes, but there wasn't a wide range of monsters to fight, bosses were great ofcourse, but just the average monsters were.. Eh. Items.. Too little for such a big game really, I didn't like the whole tier thing either, this made it feel like every other weapon or armor I acquire is useless because there is only that one item everyone is trying to get, I'm hoping Starbound won't have that type of thing and have EVERY weapon have a good side to it and a bad instead of just having that one godly weapon that out weighs every other one, I really don't want tailor-made monsters, I would very much enjoy them to have as much variety in attacks as possible.

But with both, the only similarity the games share is that is a 2D scrolling game, I like starbound because it is set of in the future. I'm not even sure in what timeline Terraria was based in seeing it had rifles crossbows and laser weapons.. Strange but gave it a bit of variety.

And I do want tons of awesome and unique discoveries, why would I ever want to have to compare experiences? I don't want that, in my opinion I wouldn't like to fight the same boss twice.. Over-all I'm in it for the loot, I think like many others I love exploration aspects in Terraria, mining endlessly until I find a big space filled with monsters guarding a golden chest, that's what I loved.

This is all my opinion though.

TL;DR I liked Terraria because it gave me that feeling of exploration through caves to get loot almost like a dungeon crawler game, but I feel like it had too little items and had god armor and weapon which made everything else look like poop, I wish Starbound makes every weapon have a good side and bad so there is no best weapon or gear.

I don't see how these threads get created. Yes terraria was a good game. And yes, starbound will also be a good game. But terraria is dead so it can't really be compared anymore. Starbound has more potential than terraria, adn has tons more content. They're both good, but terraria's dead and starbound has more to it. ;)

Honestly these games are completely different, like you said none will be better. It would be like comparing TF2 to Minecraft or Doom 3 to Dig doug ;)

I don't think rivalry is coming out of this the way you put it. Most of the community here actually has played and enjoyed Terraria. As put before, lots of people don't like how Terraria has 'died' and are moving on, so it could be a friendly past competition with an old ghost.

Starbound is very ambitious and expansive. There's a bunch of clear cut differences like quests, a universe of generation (rather than one world, every world following the same sort of restrictions; one jungle, bunch of corrupt zones, two oceans), combat, monster pets, 'research' with information on life forms, and a binding story. These are great on the argument for Starbound.

Even then though, Terraria has a place in my heart, and so does Minecraft. Really, I think Starbound is still going to take the cake because I'm not following the same structure every time I play.
In Terraria you explore the surface, mine the basic ores, explore some biomes, kill bosses, mine some advanced ores, then kill advanced bosses.
In Minecraft you can live a creative life of building, but the basic tiered progression structure is still there.
In Starbound we're going to be true explorers with thousands of varied tools, and we'll always be challenged by the level 100 planets.

Note: replayability makes you play more.

redigit is making another game though:rolleyes: and i hope theres no rivalry. i sense that the terraria players are coming here too, while still playing terraria. so we have a balance of both games;) hopefully its nothing like twilight

The majority of people here came from terraria, and know how great it is, so I doubt there'll be rivalry anyway, because most everyone has already played terraria.

personally everyone/ALOT of people (including myself) have been comparing the game to terraria when in truth the most I can see thats similiar about them is you can get gear, build a home and kill monsters.
That is NOT alot of similarity beyond that the 2d style is the only other thing that links them but that doesnt create alot assessment value between the two so I think alot of us need to let go its links and looks that side with terraria and look at the picture more of a person instead of a child under a fathers shadow because the game looks far too good to be treated like that.

I think the Combat that i've seen so far for starbound crushes terraria's combat.
in terraria, you get hurt if the enemies touch you. in Starbound, the enemies has to go through an attack-animation before they can hurt you, but you can block theese attacks with a shield and counter-attack them!
    terraria.....i'm sorry.....

I go back and play minecraft and terraria from time to time, just like I go back and play all my games from time to time.

More games = better, why bother with rivalaries or ill-temperment towards other games of the like ;)

People who compare the two obviously have no brain. And HOW can you compare a game that isn't even finished to game that is?

Tiy left Red for the seemingly sole purpose of screwing him over. I imagine Tiy will revel in any victory Starbound gains against Terraria. Also, no one even think about saying Terraria and Starbound are two different games that just happen to be about the same thing like there's no competition or constant comparison going on here. It's almost like saying Ash and Gary are just two different people who happen to have the same hobby.

I don't think there will be a lot of rivalry between the two communities. That would be kind of pointless. But comparing Starbound to similar games in the same genre, Starbound is more ambitious. It's probably going to be the best unless something better comes along.
