Starbound too Punishing for Builders?

Meh, I just suppose that is what a creative mode or cheating is for though.

Or if you really want to play legit just going around collecting every kind of block for a while you'll have enough for almost anything like it happens with other sandbox games.

Otherwise, another option is to maybe play on a server with a few like minded people on the forums? Or like minded friends. And trade items with each other, as long as you trust them enough to know that they probably aren't cheating to get them.

I'm probably going to do the last of these later instead of the former ones, just not as interested in it until a bit better server settings come in.

Here's my solutions on the issue:
    1. Drastically reduce printer costs.
    2. Allow the printer to scan certain building materials (but nothing like wood, which actually has crafting uses).
-This way, we can buy stacks of a certain material. Such as a stack of smooth metal.
    3. Allow us to craft some, but not all, unique items, such as pots, avian beds, tiled roofs, etc.

  3. I am just trying to push for more support in the area of building within the base game. Combat always seems to trump out -- and currency & exploration are getting a lot of attention too.

I can't begin to describe my disappointment when I first learned I couldn't craft a computer in a sci-fi building game.

Well, I don't think anything is really stopping anyone from building. I've seen some really awesome builds already.

It's just that (mainly) if you're going to play on the main mode, you're expected to do all of these things. Some people want to just build whatever they can right away, sure and for that you're able to mod the game or possibly have a creative mode later. Some want to just be invincible in combat? Same deal. Some want to explore fast? Dupe fuel, use some speed "hacks" and look around., but this is the main mode where it all of those things come together. And sure, it would be nice to not have to take so long to get to build some stuff, I agree on that. But it's hard to find the right place to balance these things. You're pretty much supposed to have to do the other two (exploring, or combat) to gather resources to build.

I'm sure Tiyuri doesn't really want it to be so that once you scan every item into your 3d printer once you have a near infinite supply of items as long as you grind away some pixels. The right balance should still give people who want to build on the main mode a reason to go out and explore and use combat.

For the computer thing, I'm a bit sad that there isn't more content building wise also atm.

  5. Yeah, agreed on all points.

I can be the exception -- wanting to build a castle that dwarfs the pre-made Glitch Castle that already exists. And there are, truly, some already amazing builds. But building and crafting in general still need to be tuned -- it's just too harsh even for casual players right now. (and worse; at time it can be disappointing)

Additionally -- there are some things that are far too limited. Plant Fiber for example, could be an ingredient in Plant Blocks/Decorative items. Various stones/sands/and dusts could be ingredients in their own craftable furniture, blocks, and decorative items -- but they're not, and it boggles my mind.

I don't mind some grind to the crafting and building -- but right now, the interesting stuff ONLY comes from looting, and then it ONLY comes from the 3D printer. There should be more paths to existing items, more craftable decoratives, and more ways to enjoy building outside of looting and the 3D printer.

Completely agree that there aren't really near enough recipes as far as I can tell for decorative blocks or even decorative blocks in general. I'm sure at least that one will be fixed over time though.

I also think that almost all of the blocks each type of area has should have some way to build them rather than just lucking out on finding them. Of course these would require a decent (but not too much at all) amount of resources to make each of them.

Some probably should be a little rarer, but mainly to encourage exploration. Having most of the blocks mainly obtainable by luck as it is now probably will get really annoying later.

  7. To recap how I feel about things now;

    1. 3D Printer tuning needed (the costs can still be too ridiculous). Needs to scan/make unique blocks

    2. You should be able to craft into most/all of the unique blocks or decorations

    3. There should be ways to find (by exploring or by cost) to make the ability to craft unique blocks/decorations permanently (without the 3D printer)

    4. More of everything pls.

I love you, I feel there should be an ability to make/buy schematics for the cool items you find as well as the blocks

Also , you partly have to keep in mind for this we are going to have 10 tiers in this game.

Only 4 are in the game at the moment. While the pixel numbers are certainly not balanced for tier 4 it's possible its much more reasonable by the time we get to tier 10.

  12. This completely slipped my mind. Good call -- I wonder many pixels we will be blessed with in the higher tiers.

However, this thread should still be on the radar, as it brings to light some concerns and great discussion.

Add to that, you'll be able to sell random items. Which pretty much mean there's no risk pixels there where you can pretty much sell the items and then go spend the pixels right away instead of worrying about any death penalty.

i actually whould change the pixel cost when scaning to 0 pixels. this just doesnt make sence. but keep the "destroy the item" thing.
then rebalance the item pixel cost.
why? because pixels are not only a currency, but also a raw material to create things if you think about it.

next: make block types scannable. but it whould be a better idea to only accept "stacks" or some sort of. so you need at least X slime blocks to be able to create them.

HOWEVER i whould prefer seeing some damage/progression balance changes before tackeling the building part because building is basicly "post-game"

irelevant. once you found them you gain them permanently trough the printer.

I haven't even touched the 3D printer in my 45 hours of playing so far, but I know what you're saying about it being difficult for the love of the build!

I enjoy building crazy awesome houses and junk but it takes so long to find what you need, then find fuel, then find the pixels to build what you need to get back home to then find you are short 3 or 4 blocks lol.

To be fair a lot of what you are asking will probably be fixed on more than one base gamemode is added. The devs did mention interest in having a creative mode in the game.

After all, that's probably where you'll make your choice of gametype so there is something else than that ??? in the "mode" section next to your character. Right now I get the feeling they want to focus on the "core" game mode where the focus will be on exploration(and incentives to perform said exploration in the form of recipes you can find around the universe and so on) and things like more creative-driven mode where there are more items unlocked from the get-go will probably come later during the second or third phase of the beta if it comes before the official release.

And from what I see "more of everything" is already getting steadily(even if possibly slower than some might like) catered to a little bit every little patch. Do give credits to a very small team for how many different things they manage to cram in every patch. It doesn't seem like much but there's always -something- to cover almost every aspects ever times. Just don't forget the devs are also humans and some of them are right now spending more time working on this than you are spending awake in the days :) (like Tiy did just yesterday with his 19 hours of nonstop work). They're releasing as a playable beta a long-awaited game but recall they're still just humans :)

(and the last thing we want is a dev that get an heart attack because they spent too long working on the game with too many energy drinks to remain awake long enough to meet the demands of the fan. It happened to a guy in my college back when I studied 3D animation for a short time)

Also, kudos for noting that you knew this is still a beta right now in your original post and generally remaining civil. Too many seem to be coming in right now expecting this to be complete while having missed the developpers' warnings about the three phases of the beta.

  18. Yeah -- the devs are pretty amazing. I thought it was important to voice these things so that they don't go unnoticed though.

A "creative" mode for building would be a dream come true.

I've heard refineries are a great way to recuperate pixels? But I haven't built one yet, can't say for sure.
