I know its extremely early to be talking about Texture Packs & Mods at this stage, but to some people they can be the highlight of the game, being able to implement anything you want into the game, or changing the textures of something to a different colour or style.

Anyway I have a question, I'm sure it wont kick of immediately but if it does, and it does get popular, will Starbound offer Support for them? For example in Minecraft directly on the title screen there is the option to change your texture pack, and this makes it extremely easy, I know a lot of people didn't use texture packs in games like Terraria just because it was a little bit of hassle to install the correct mods, and those texture pack were absolutely amazing, and I didn't expect any Texture Packs to even be released for Terraria, same for Mods.

Who knows, the game might be so complex that adding a simple Mod or Texture Pack, will be extremely difficult and people wont even try.

Anyway, I'm just looking for a discussion on if people would like to have their say :)

*ALSO, do you think you'll be able to save and trade maps? Making it possible for "Custom Maps", they're extremely fun and the possibilities in Starbound would be absolutely amazing.

Well, seeing as Tiy mentioned long ago that Starbound is very modular and is lua friendly, I would say: yes, yes we'll probably see plenty of mods at the very least.

Texture packs may be another story, as you mentioned there's a LOT of crap in this game to change

Well, there's going to be mod support for sure, though probably only post-release.

Texture packs I'm not sure, but I hope they add support for it. Though from just the screenshots of the game I'd say there's going to be even more textures in Starbound than in Terraria! One piece of armor in Terraria needed like 15 different frames of animation to make it look nice. Now a texture pack maker is going to have to do that for each body segment of monsters - arms, legs, torso, head, etc. And that's just monsters!

I think they will be, but you have to give time to the mod developer and such to make them :p It would be sweet to be playing starbound with custom made sprites.

You had to unpack and repack minecraft.jar to change texture packs until fairly recently, and I don't think it showed in the main menu until this year. I'll ask for texture packs on the Starbound title screen in 2015. :3

I have no idea what unpacking and repacking minecraft.jar has to do with texture packs, I never had to do that to install the texture packs on Minecraft, and the menu on the title screen has been there as far back as I can remember. *and I played the Alpha

It will be easy to mod
they talked about their plans here :

(It is a litte bit old but i think that is okay)

  9. MOD API after launch with some easy tools for modders create them will be awesome enough! :D

Everyone said stuff about mod support, few said stuff about texture, but i didn't read anything about maps. I don't know how that will work though, I barely understand how the star map will work. That thing still have me wondering about it, I guess that they'll make it possible but it surpasses the way I think..

So far the game seems unique enough to keep me interested longer than minecraft without the need of texture mods. But I am sure people will make it.

I wouldn't understand why someone would wanna redo the blocks, they already look so nice. But adding a new one won't be hard since modding will be easy so they don't need to make 250 billion tiles. Some people might wanna change one thing they didn't like about the chair.

I thought the Terraria blocks looked really nice at first, but after 100 hours of playing, your eyes get used to it, change is really satisfying.

116 hours of gameplay in Terraria for me, that took me about 6 months to get regardless of how much I played it.
OT: I still don't have an issue with the tiles, I am different though. I learned to just deal with what I got to the point anything can satisfy me as long as it's not absolute poop.

Gonna have to be seriously committed to re-texture everything in this game haha

There is a lot of possibilities with texture packs, they could possibly make a "weapons texture pack" changing the particles and texture of several type of weapons. Also there could be a way to change a specific type of planet into something completely different, but only that planet.. Even in the Texture packs in Terraria a lot of them didn't do every single sprite.

modding shouldn't be difficult, and adding your own things to the game should work out pretty well.

Texture packs though, that's gonna be pretty hard and maybe not even necessary. Seeing as we can already color almost every block any color we want and that there's so many choices, I feel like it'd be easier to just make your own blocks and armors and put them into the game rather than retexture everything.

custom planets I do want a lot. There's already going to be custom quests too. It will be amazing. There will be people who make a whole planet covered with cities and quests.

Just imagine. The whole planet covered in beautiful player made things. Even the underground has dungeons specifically made, and what not. That's almost what I want more than anything. All the amazing custom adventure planets.

It'd be like Little Big Planet, except literally a whole planet

Texture mods are just cosmetic eye candy thats meh for me. Things that enhance gameplay such as creating space ship combat mods, invasion of planet mods, command army/mercenaries/pirates mods are things that will make this game beyond epic.

Depending on what direction they decided to go texture packs could be cool. I find the best are the ones that completely redesign the look of the game or are based on a theme. Like saying changing everything to look like it came from Halo or Metroid. I'd try those kinds of texture packs out.

It sounds like there will be a ton of stuff to retexture. I've done a lot of mucking around with texture packs for various games, but Starbound sounds like theres a huge amount of blocks, vanity items, armor components, weapon components, monster components, elements for parallax backgrounds, etc, etc, etc. Sounds pretty daunting.

I remember having to do that in Alpha a long, long time ago. They added the texture pack stuff in 1.2.2, about a year after development started I think? Development went something like Classic -> indev -> infdev and then the survival alpha.
