Starbound Sprite Art Has Me A Little Worried...

    It's actually because the sprites are too limited imo, which is the opposite of what the OP thinks. I mean, terraria's sprites are extremely limited, more limited than starbounds(they don't allow for much customization and changes) but look at something like maplestory's sprites. just load up bannestory. you can do so much with those simple little sprites it's unbelievable. You can tell the change in style of their new sprites tough, they look a lot worse, but still.

  2. Then get a refund or create a mod that changes that.
    Do you have a problem or something with the amount of negativity and aggression in your posts o0 ?

    P,S:I know maplestory is kind of a shitty game, but damn it I love the sprites, I used to make little animations with them xD. There's just so much customization for such small characters :p.

    I well I would say it's more of a matter of not knowing the technical aspect of sprite art, not necessarily what I "think".

    Watching some live-streams, I agree that the palette is a little bit too subdued for the sprite characters, but it works well for the environment. And there is a light source system in the game, so I think a small palette fix (e.g option for more vibrant primary colors on sprites) + light sourcing on top of parts of the sprites (allow for color interactions with sprites and environment) will probably be enough to make the main characters look more vibrant against the environment.

    Actually I agree with the original poster. The character sprites are bland to a worrisome extent.

    @OP

    My artistically ignorant eyes do not raise any flags. When I look at the game I am generally pleased. Mind you this could be the equivalent of a platypus looking at a Monet...but I feel just fine about it in my ignorance.

    I :love: the variety of sprites, especially the random monster kind. The devs are such geniuses to make them like that. I think your worried that the avatars will like blend with the background too much? Maybe like a black border around the sprites might help? but then it would make them seem like they are not part of the background at all - like funny 2d stickers. I think the devs should leave them just the way they are. I can't wait to play Floran, it's a pretty race :DD

    I am coming back from lurking to provide a less hostile riposte to your concern.

    Firstly, what you are seeing on your screen is determined by several factors that you might be forgetting;

    Your Pc & Monitor - Everything you see is based on your graphics card and or internal chipset, and depending on your monitors aspect ratio and or resolution, you are probably seeing things completely different than anyone else. It's possible the color palette could appear smudged if your resolution is low enough.

    Screenshots - Most, if not all of these are screenshots, and are never a perfect representation of the finished product in action. The livestreams are usually the same way, less look and more performance so people can enjoy a faster stream. Expect for it to appear differently as a finished game.

    If both of those are satisfactory, consider that it could just be a personal aesthetic. I too like the standard retro divide between character with a black outline, but understand this is a different game, and different art style. Some games look better with one, some without. I loved the cell shaded look of Wind Waker, but also enjoyed the dark realism of Twilight Princess. It just comes down to personal preference, and not so much what is right or wrong.

    Hopefully this helped. Back to lurking.

    Ok then, everyone aside from the guy with the ugly avatar that adds nothing to the discussion.

    Looks like Mr.Grumpy woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning! Many people in this thread appear to agree with the OP so really I don't see why people had to try and speak for everyone. Its just arrogant.

    Regardless, I don't think the original post is entirely correct (Though it is just his opinion) but I do think he has a point. Especially with how colorful this game and its characters are and can be, there are some screenshots where I have a bit of a hard time figuring out whats happening between the characters and the backgrounds themselves. Could this be fixed when the game is actually in motion? Perhaps. The problem didn't seem to be so prevalent in some of the videos, after all.
