i like pastel colors, they give more of a "post apocalyptic" feeling, rather than a "fantasy" one :giggle:
plus, vibrant colors could easily be added with some shaders

Looks perfectly fine to me, the style fits very well, imho ;)

I definitely prefer dark borders on my pixel art. But overall, it will affect my like for Starbound only in the slightest way. I won't like it any less because of that small detail.

  4. From an artist's point of view, I agree that the lack of separation of foreground to background can lead to a bit of pickles.

Not to mention the pastel colors, having itself already muted, can mess up the environmental perspective.

However, I haven't even played the game yet, so I can't really truthfully say that it will lead to a bit of a pickle, or it will mess up the separation of foreground and background.

I honestly don't know. I think the sprites look fine, and fit in well with the wider art style. Mind you, this isn't the first time people have brought it up. Some people seem to be less accepting of it.

i had a big problem with terraria sprites; the weapons where detailed but the character was clunky and just didn't fit very well(in my opinion) but the sprites we've seen show their own style that fits starbound and pulls away from terraria. sooo the further we get away from terraria the better, people get these games mixed up enough.

I don't mind the graphics as I look at it from a person who's moved on from Terraria and so it's really just moving from one similar graphic style to another.

I can understand where the OP is coming from and I'd say wait and see how the game actually turns out. Seeing is one thing but actually playing and seeing how the graphics look and feel when you're actually playing is a whole different experience.

Oh, good, I'm not the only one. While I think the art for Starbound is fantastic, I agree that it lacks the bold definition that Terraria had. That said, I also think the art style works well overall. It gives the game a little less of an intense feel - I think it sets the mood up for a more relaxing exploration setting rather than Terraria's combat-oriented setting.

I don't agree. I like it. I'm not worried. My only small complaint would be that character eyes aren't detailed enough. It would be nice to be able to choose an eye color & stuff. But it's not really a huge deal.

Honestly I felt that way too. Felt like there's a lack of distinction between things. However I've seen screenshots of dropped items, they have a black border around them.

Juice Box feels where you're coming from... you have a right to be worried, but Juice Box is *almost* certain that they will find a way.

I get what the OP means. But it's best we wait till the game is finished to pass full judgement.

But yes I understand your concern OP and it's occurred to me a time or two as well.

I agree with the OP. I am a little worried about the lack of borders creating a kind of washed out look, with foreground and background sprites all blending in together. We are not going to really know for sure until we actually see things when the game comes out. I pre-ordered and have no regrets. The concepts regarding the game design look incredible and I truly can't wait. But yeah, I will hold my final judgment until I play, but would have probably liked a different visual approach.

Thanks for keeping it classy folks, and just to re-emphasize the game is going to be amazeballs no matter what. :D

Terraria looks a lot worse. A LOT WORSE. Both are in a 16 bit retro style, but terraria does look a lot worse. I have no idea what you're talking about personally.

I don't see what you're saying... Maybe add pictures to help dummies like me understand. But seriusly I haven't noticed anything bad about the art yet.

The main thing that sucks in SB art are those tiny dot-eyes of Humans.

  19. It looks perfectly fine to me, the art style seems to be clean and is working well together.

I didn't talk about YOU, I talked about ME and MY opinion, okay? I hate those eyes. I want a refund.
