"Players and youtubers will get access to the beta at the same time." Very very rough quote, but it's basically what was said.

Logging on for the first time in months, and what do I see?

Youtubers getting early access. It seems like a desperate business plan to rake in more useless dollars, but what do I know?

I really want to say I'm shocked, I really do, but... Come on, what'd you guys expect? They've done the same shit before, and they're gonna do it again, because old habits die hard. :)

    Live with it.

Lots of ups, lots of downs and lots of all-arounds. Still, Starbound beta is coming out. This beta looks more polished than many indie games look when complete, which means a lot for the reputation of a new studio. Chucklefish should do the happy-dance.

Also, as mentioned by another well-informed user, why did Chucklefish decide to round up every slightly popular youtuber and chuck them all in a single hole?

I'm more interested in watching community-made videos that mark the beginning of an epic adventure, one that involves discovery, building, and gradually unfolding and exploring every inch of the offered product.

I'm not interested in watching people that pump LPs out like water fiddle about with a game, repeating "this is great fun" or "omg i died, lol!" every few minutes until the video comes to an abrupt, and dissatisfying end.

I may not know about the holy grail LP, because I refuse to spoil the game for myself, but it's just a thought.

Apex. Their females look distressingly human. I hope my Starbounder never gets too drunk at an Apex bar - things might get hairy!

I absolutely love that the human ship is TOTALLY a KOTOR/SWTOR design. I think I have an unnatural fondness for DEM STABILIZER FINS

Be that as it may... I for one am still going to try. Never streamed or Youtube'd before, but Starbound is going to get me to try. I'm not looking for fame, and for the reasons you cite I'm not likely to find it on Youtube - except in that I might still be playing Starbound long after the "personalities" have moved on.

I've got 566 hours in Terraria. I would not be in the least surprised if Starbound winds up far surpassing that.

Now, I am still irritated at this move, partly for sheer personal agitation (dangling in front of me the present that I can't open yet), and now partly for the reasons you cite. But don't underestimate the enthusiasm of the community. Just because we can't be the Next Big Name over it won't keep absolutely everyone from putting out content anyway.
In fairness, what was actually said was that an early release for press would not delay the game. If it was in a state that they could release it in advance to some outlets to drum up hype, they never said they wouldn't - quite the contrary. Only that they wouldn't delay US getting the game so that THEY could get it earlier - that if they only got it to a showable state at the same time it was ready for release, THEN the press and the preordering public would get it at the same time.

(Apologies Sorry for the alliteration there.)

Given the delay in Leth's stream... last night?... I can believe that it's still being hammered on urgently to get it into release state.

Hopefully, the viewership won't have moved on. My prediction is still dire, but I am (as is well recorded elsewhere) a bitter old man with a twisted, blackened, root-like heart.

Bartwe certainly hasn't stopped bashing away at the netcode, that's for certain.

On a more personal note, I hope that one day my reputation will have grown so solid that I can, myself, simply substitute in {cogent arguments} rather than writing pages of text =) Made my day!.

I honestly don't think it will impact the future of the game very much.
While it may make some people unhappy, annoyed, or ruin the chance of investing into the community with independent video/content creation it will only be for a few days and I don't see it having any real long term ramifications. Most of the time Chucklefish takes into consideration the opinions of the majority here but it was a sound decision on their part it's almost necessary at this point. They needed more fuel for the fire and now they have it, if you haven't noticed the number of newcomers and pre-orders starting to roll back in.

Indie developers have to compensate for the marketing budget that they don't have these 'YouTube personalities' are a cheap efficient way of doing so. It helps in many more ways than it hurts maybe not by investing into your community but getting the word out quickly about your game to a vast majority of people that might not have even heard of it. Let's be honest they probably need the cash at this point even more so if Tiy wants to move them all to one central location and rent a building for them to work out of.

and thus the avians sang out in an immaculate chorus while starbound descended and kicked away chuck norris.

I think it's also relevant to say that, while people here are complaining about youtubers getting early access, people in Leth and Bartwe's streams were complaining about the lack of gameplay videos! :cautious:

Can say I am also annoyed by the popular youtubers getting into the game before the rest of the community. For it does seem like a "We have it, and we got it because we are more famous than you." I can see why they did allow the popular LPers into the game.

Still going to play and still going to try and help in the growth of the community. Regardless if this move would have a negative or a positive effect on the long-term life of the game. Like many other games, after the polished shine wears off and the popular names eventually move on, there will still be that rock solid group of committed members of the community.

    Gotta buckle up folks!
