Do you think sportscasters pay for their press passes to view professional games? They are supporting the game by getting video of it out to the public which just feeds the Hype Monster even more. And of course they are in it for the money - that's how businesses work! I know we are all excited but grow up a little bit.
Except that these LetsPlayer's aren't really properly playing the game or demonstrating it, and are spending more time talking about their personal lives and talking over the actual gameplay that's going on. The amount of people recommending it to their friends so they can play multiplayer is going to be a much larger group of people. Put it this way, yes these streamers might have a thousand or more people watching them, but for every person in the beta you're going to have their 25-150 friends seeing them play Starbound on Steam. And they'll want to buy and play it to, which ends up in an exponential gain. They'll get much more off of this than they would off of any of the youtubers/streamers. People that watch live streams are not typically people who actually buy and play these games. They only watch to see the people who are streaming, not the game itself. Also, the staggering amount of people who are saying they "can't wait" on the forum yet don't have a pre-order badge is sad, they'll be the ones illegally downloading the game at first chance.
That's just my job bleeding over. I'm an editor, so I edit. I can't really switch it off and when I see an opportunity to help someone improve their use of English, I sometimes take it without thinking too much about it. Hope you're not offended. It's set up so that it automatically converts the release time from UTC to whatever time zone your computer uses.
They don't need to demonstrate it, they just need to play it to give the game more exposure, and that's what they're doing. The guys I've watched didn't talk about their personal lives much but played the game, most even explained some things (or at least stumbled upon things and pointed them out). This exposure brings in thousands of new people who then follow the pattern you described, thus this exponential gain you're talking about is even more pronounced for Youtubers. It's interesting that you know so much about the people who watch let's plays and live streams. Is there a study about their behaviour? Now, I don't know most of the Youtubers on that list, but I know that Northernlion and TB do more than let's plays, they provide first looks and reviews, thus their crowd may very well try out the games they are shown. I pre-ordered the game and I don't have a badge. I know I'm due one, but I have no idea how to get it. This might go for many others here, too.
Personally, I don't like it when people that have a bit of popularity on YouTube or Twitch and get every single new release for free because the devs want to promote the game. I would have expected this more from EA or Activision but not Starbound / Chucklefish. I (foolishly) thought they would allow their biggest fans and largest supporters to play the game first but I guess popularity is just more important to them.

I like it, I can watch plenty of enjoyable videos like that, informing me about the game, and people that have never heard of the game can get a pretty good idea of how it will be like as well, which translates to an even larger player-base... It comes out in less than a day anyway, it's not that we'll never get to play it.
Well, yes, it is at some time PST. The converter should've given you that time if your PC is set to PST, but if I recall correctly, it's 10 am. Lol I don't have preorder badge but I've preordered, anyway they have to reach as maximum people as possible and that is not an expensive option, I would do the same. Better with it than without
but thats just not right. -all prominent youtubers would have made videos anyways -> same publicity as now -if 80k+ people will start playing it on steam all their friends will see it -> more publicity -more people which are not that famous could do streams/LPs and stuff -> more publicity -everyone who preordered could it finally show his friends and convince them to buy it and play together -> more publicity the only reason to give it to "famous" people first is..... well i dont know. only thing i know is, that they can earn more money(the youtubers, not CF) EDIT: I just remembered that nearly all indi games get a small discount when they release on steam. so there might be the chance, that it will be cheaper than for all the preorder people (just to prepare yourselfs) and CF should start sending keys out. about 80% of the kickstarters i backed failed with the key delivery in time (mailserver problems and all the like) so it happens often, that early backers need to wait way longer than people who buy it on steam at 10 PST
The pixel tier pre-order doesnt give a badge, and thats the one I, and most people, bought. So just because you forked over 50 bucks more than most people doesnt mean the rest of us are all pirates.
