Yeah, I think the creator said he took inspiration from Dwarf Fortress.

I can't see ANY similarity to minecraft when I'm playing it...

watching some videos, totally dwarf fortress with a gui

there will be always someone who will say something is a clone of other thing, ALWAYS

I know, but when the two games aren't even related, it doesn't make sense. :C

I'm not so sure this should ever be on Steam Greenlight. Steam, yes. Greenlight, no. Have you guys heard about how some people are spamming it with horrible RPGMaker "games", so now, people are downvoting ANYTHING made with RPGMaker, regardless of quality? A friend of mine is being hurt by this, being forced to hide his quality game solely because of those idiots. Starbound could get the same thing by some Minecraft and Terraria fans, getting "instant downvote" comments and downvotes on claims of being a clone of those two games. :/ Putting Starbound on Greenlight would most likely hurt more than help.

Unfortunately, I think they'll have to go through Greenlight to get onto Steam from now on. :C

  6. That's not necessarily true.
We don't need help getting on Steam, you guys. :)

it's good that they still have some months before they have to "go green". don't get me wrong, i love the principle of greenlight since it was announced, but it is very chaotic right now. i mean, heck, half of the people have completely misunderstood the whole system down to its very core.
half life 3, battlefield 3, even console exclusive games... really?

    edit::ninja:
no greenlight needed for you? nice to hear! might save you some trouble...

if think steam greenlight is for small projects, starbound would be able to be on steam without the need of going into the greenlight, like any other game from mainstream companies like EA and Activision

I guess I misunderstood what Greenlight was then. Apologies.

What makes you think that? Just because it's 2D? Starbound has a different UI, better graphics, and different art. Maybe by a small group it might, but the majority won't.

I would personally prefer if the dev's decide to put their game up somewhere else then steam, if not entirely avoiding it which would maybe over the long run be a kick in the teeth since there are so many people using steam, plus the fact that steam is so convenient in making purchases, downloads, screenshots and the whole equipment of goodies within the client itself, making things considerably easier.

The only and real problem I have with steam personally and maybe other people have the same experience and thought (might seem bit off topic here, apologies) is that the client is in the way. How many times? Well, always. I hate the fact that the steam client needs to be connected to the internet even though you might wanna play single player only. What if you lose connection? What if you haven't paid your last bill? What if your router fried? What if steam itself has issues and can't connect you or entirely offline, making it impossible to access any of your games.
I mean seriously, I think it's been said and debated over so many other forums and specifically on the steam forums yet their voices seem to be unheard or unseen from what I remember (things might have changed since I'm barely using the steam forums).
To make a comparison, use GoG for example, you pay for it, you download it, no issues whatsoever. There exists no client that is needed or necessary in order to play the games you bought there, DRM free, everything integrated into the game itself no hassle, nothing at all.
Steam tend's to crash, lose connection, has maintenance or to flip the side...the persons and people using it, lose connection, having a poor and weak connection, bad ISP providers, not allowing them to connect to it and therefor, I think I'm not exaggerating with the next statement when saying that there are still a lot of people out there who don't have the best available connection.

Greenlight in of itself is a nice little community tool/apparatus/voting procedure but won't be necessary in this case here I believe, for Starbound, as already mentioned and stated from the admins and dev's.

I don't think Terraria would have had such numerous fanbase if it wasn't published through Steam.

    So yes.
We should probably Green Steamlight the sh*t out of it.

Steam is convenient enough but my point was the client itself, getting and being in the way, not only and essentially for Starbound when it arrives there but for every single game bought there. People shouldn't be connected to steam or the internet itself to especially if a number of them are pure single player games. It's a minor/major annoyance whenever steam is down or you don't have a connection, you rely every single time on the client in order to play your games on steam, regardless whether they are single or multiplayer games.

Starbound would have it good on steam, of course, that's out of the question. It becomes a problem for many people though who want to play their game but again...have the client in the way, even for the offline mode you have to be connected, which is fairly obnoxious.

Starbound will go on steam, there's no point in arguing on that but I'd love to see it also on other digital distribution platforms, sites, etc.
What could be possibly wrong with that? Nothing at all. They would only spread their fanbase and would be able to share and distribute their game through the other digital distribution sites, increasing the numbers, which seems to be pretty beneficial and would ultimately be an option for people who have slight issues with steam and the client and those who aren't achievement hunters.

I'm pretty sure you can still play games on steam, you just won't be able to play online, or have your progress saved to the cloud (it will still save to the computer itself). I know DRM is sometimes an issue, so if they do release it on steam, it will probably be available somewhere else as well.

Nomnoms is correct. You can play games with Steam offline.

  16. Rainbow Dash

greenlight is more for the people who dont have the power of puplishers *or something like that*

    starbound does have that power

its not like everygame ever is going to be put thru greenlight before it hits steam, somegames will just be put up automaticly

i dont get this... if it has differnt art, how does it have better graphics?

I think it should be released both on and off of steam like most retail games. Not saying Starbound is retail cause it's not but anyways, it should be released like that because like Dr. Death said, people wouldn't be able to access it for single player. But it should also be released on steam for multiplayer purposes and whatnot.
To make a long story short: No Steam for mostly single player and Steam for the multiplayer community.

I don't get the problem with Steam.. It can't be the "I can't play my games offline" thing, because Steam has that..

    So.. What exactly is it?

Most of the games I play on steam are single player:koala:.

    OT:
I think greenlight is a bit of a FAIL at the moment. There are a lot of fake games on it and the real games don't get noticed.

Like it or not, Steam is one of the only viable options at all.
    Reasons;
What else is there outside of download to drive, origin, or actual retail?
Download to drive, You might as well put the price tag to free because that's what's going to happen, pirating/malicious intent or not. Someone will share their copy with a friend, and that friend will share, etc, etc.

Actual retail is so unbearably unprofitable especially at an under $50 price point
A retail will always want to make a hefty profit or it's not worth while, Let's assume for now Starbound will retail for $10 like terraria. Okay, Now just cut off about 3-4$ right there because the store is buying it for cheaper than $10. Lets saying about 6.50$ as a happy median; Well. That box wasn't free to make. Let's say about .50-.75 a box. Those disks aren't free either, -.25~. Well now we're down to 5.60~. Well guess what aswell, You have to keep making copies from the master copy using a computer, That isn't free. About 1 to 1.50$ per copy to the bills, 4.50 now. Divide that among the members who actually will get paid and their bills, And you probally get around $0.02 per person per copy profit. That's assuming everyone who play starbound BOUGHT the copy, Because guess how incredibly easy it is to share disks with friends and make it not need a disk to run. You don't need pirating or malicious intent to get people sharing like with D2D the only issue is they have to grab a disk instead of a flash drive.

    Origin...
That's more than enough reason not to touch it.
But if you REALLY don't know why, Have fun basically having a legal trojan/spyware on your PC.
[And I'm almost dead certain you can't upload a game there without becoming absorbed by EA entirely, forced to make CoD 12]

Steam isn't looking anywhere nearly as bad as you guys are making it out to be now is it.
