Starbound On Funnyjunk

Earlier today, I saw Starbound's very own penguin GIF uploaded to funnyjunk.

The image made into the website's front page, and yet the uploader didn't give any credit to starbound, and nly 1 person in the comment section noted that it was from starbound.

This probably doesn't deserve investigation, but it does serve as a sign that Starbound is starting to get some recognition world-wide, so that's pretty neat.

 

Pretty much the same thing happened on imgur recently, same gif and everything. Only a couple of comments knew, and they weren't highly "upvoted" either, not reaching high publicity.

 

Who mentioned it? lol.

It sickens me when people take credit for others peoples art.

 

Welcome to the internet, where images get passed around.

 

I agree completely. People sometimes gets bent out of shape about images being passed around, but it's a sign that the image is getting famous. Starbound still have a ways to go before becoming the brand-name in space sandbox exploration, but we're getting there.

 

Funnyjunk has a history of stealing/borrowing/taking/using work and images without the artist's or creator's permission.
There was actually a big legal debacle last year with a webcomic creator, Matthew Inman. If I remember right there was a lawsuit about many of his comics being put on funnyjunk with no recognition given to him.

Eventually the comics were taken down.

I like the idea of a growing fan-base, but I don't want it to be too young or too rude.

while I support the freedom of expression, I have to agree with your arguments. I just hope nothing big comes out of this.

 

The post on Imgur yesterday basically said "Saw this guy waddling around the gallery and figured I'd repost it for my own use since the other post was deleted." or something, and then boom - front page.

 

Heh, the internet is unpredictable. Since none of my items have ever gotten stolen by someone else, I don't think I understand the pain artists go through when they found out that their art has been used without permission. I hope Tiy, Omni, Molly, Rho and the rest of the fine staff at Chucklefish aren't angry at the internet for using their content wihtout permission; the internet can be a bit shrewd at times.

 

Nothing big will come of it unless you make it big. People don't realize how important a part they are in silly debacles like this one. Just by posting this Thread you're going to make someone (most likely a younger individual) sign-up for funnyjunk just to thumbs down the image and scream about stealing stuff from Starbound.

Anyways imo it's just FunnyJunk, it's a community with image sharing site, no difference from Facebook/Imgur/Reddit nothing wrong if you ask me I've seen plenty of Starbound junk on other sites with comments and no link back to the original. It's the internet it will continue to happen until someone locks us all up in a big box.

As someone who browses Reddit too much, why do you use funny junk?

 

I don't really know. I never really got into reddit, and funnyjunk seemed like a more... picture-filled site. But I can be wrong on that, since I never really browsed reddit, just glimpsed through it.

 

I saw the Imgur post, got annoyed that so few people knew what it was from and that the comments mentioning it weren't upvoted at all. Starbound needs more recognition : (

 

Reddit's default subreddits are the most cancerous things on Earth, but I'd suggest checking out the other subreddits dedicated to things you like.
