Starbound Mascot

Bacon robot?

 

Nope. For example even in MMOs. As the new Guild Wars 2 the Charr "plushies" and White Rabbits are something the community itself made to be a Mascot, also Quaggans a Funny Race with a Funny Voice! They are some short of things everybody love in-game and the DEVs "tweaked" it to be so!

 

It's already a penguin.

It's already penguins for me as well. Penguins in a lot of the early screenshots and on the main page errywhere. It's kind of stuck with me.

 

I will happily take a Poptop as our mascot. They're unique looking enough to be memorable, and I could very easily see them be growing akin to the Minecraft creeper in terms of, "Oh, shit! You stay away from me!" type panic moments. The Poptop will be our Creeper, and I will wear shirts printed with the little dudes just like I have a Creeper face shirt.

That or Bacon. He could be our mascot. Penguins are just kinda meh.

 

But then everyone will scream that it's a Mawile ripoff.

How about we let the game come out, THEN let people decide what symbolizes it, much like Minecraft's creepers.

 

No mascot, the picture of the game should be the yellow planet with a sun coming out of it. Mascots are lame.
If starbound has a mascot, people who havent experienced the game will think the game is all about it. When i see people that dont know much about minecraft, they basically refer to it as a creeper game.

 

And how they know its a creeper? ¬¬

 

With a game like starbound it's not really a good idea to force a mascot since there should be more than one thing that is noteworthy and interesting.

This isn't like Mario where the game you play as one guy doing many different things. It's many different people with many different monsters. If anything, a 'collage' of creatures works best as a 'mascot' or 'background' per say, but no individual creature or person is, in my opinion, a good mascot.

 

Heh, like Notch didn't know that he was making the star of his game when he made those. They're the only unique monster outside of the Nether. You don't design a face like that, with an sneaky AI like that, and the ability to explode inside a building game and not know you're making the thing that will cause the most rage, panic moments, and laughing in your game.

Sure, the community may have picked them as their mascot, but Notch gave the choice between, say a cookie representing a zombie, and a twelve layer thick, triple chocolate fudge cake with a stripper inside when he made the creeper. The stripper also explodes, taking a chunk of your house with her after making a hissing noise that will terrify you to this very day.

There wasn't really a choice there. Poptop, please!

 

When many who've played Terraria see the guide the game comes to mind. Can't believe how many times I've visited that guy to ask for a recipe.


Also, I'm going to wait until the game comes out to decide what it is for Starbound. After all, there must be something that reoccurs in that game.

 

It needs to be 100% original.

I just want to notate that I support your argument of disgaea already having penguins.

I mean, cmon, prinnys are legendary. But to disgaea they still make them original. Its actually pretty great.


I think the poptop should be the mascot, of the things already on the table thus far. Penguins have been done.

The thing is, The creeper started out as the unofficial mascot for minecraft. When the public beta (finally) comes out the people will select something or someone they really like.

 

I think the Novakid will end up as a mascot...

For something like this to occur more organically, I doubt we will see it happen prior to Beta. At that point (if all the creature behaviors are in) the random critter generator will, in theory, do the work for us. Someone will be playing the game and encounter something <awesome/cute/whatever> and post a picture or a video of the thing. Assuming the planet & gen conditions can be replicated well enough without error (as has been described) others can then experience that specific odd critter as well once they have the appropriate coordinates.

Likely there is going to be a lot of 'noise' with people posting their favorite critters. Personally I am not too sure any of the pre-generated ones have the draw to qualify as a mascot currently. It depends on whether the developers want to just pick something; otherwise it is up to the community to 'just let it happen'.
