Starbound knock-offs?

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by Pacific, Sep 1, 2012.

  1. Modding is different. Portal 2D is not a mod, it's a different game built on different code. I would never call a mod a knock-off, because it't just something added onto an existing game.

Don't get me wrong sometimes I like those games with a different ideas and some i don't but i think we can all agree its a game and somewhere a developer is gonna think what if this was in that "Game" and do it and possibly like it enough to release it. Either way if its good its good if its another bad knockoff well you fill out the rest :)

No, Edge of Space is not using any assets from any other game. It is programmed in C# in a heavily modified Unity engine. One should not believe everything one reads on the internet. If you do, you will find yourself also believing in sentient rubber bands, killer pretzels, and ninja squirrel armies attacking Canada.

I didn't think so. But I asked the questions anyway to try to shed light on possible Fan-Hate.

They should but then the naysayers will just make another thread that sinks into an off-topic conversation that manages to be more intelligent then the OP topic. So yeah... EoS, not really a rip-off (at least no more then Minecraft and Infiniminer,) nice to see more sandbox games, but otherwise the jury's still out. So with that... Fortnite now has an official website. What do people think?

Animations for that "Edge of Space" look crude, but otherwise, it looks nice so far.

As far as the art direction in EoS, the only thing I don't care for is the look of the foreground environment, basically meaning the blocks and walls. The backgrounds, characters, and enemies seen in the screenshots at the steam greenlight page look amazing.

So many people seem to dislike the artistic style. What specifically are people finding bothersome?

More to the topic, It's not fair for people to condemn EoS as a second rate carbon copy. Numerous posts have already explained how many games, Starbound included, gain "inspiration" from previous games. Just count me as one of those who cares more for the experience while playing the game and not how similar or dissimilar it is to another. Sure, a genuinely "new" experience can be fun, but there are elements of the 2d sandbox genre that I would love to see incorporated in many games to come!

Actually, HERO isn't a developer, he just supports them by making videos so that people will know about it.

Yeah, it does look like a knock-off, however, the game also looks like it sucks. I watched a gameplay video and literally laughed at how terrible it looks. Starbound looks 500x better, so it doesn't matter if they knocked it off or not... Although they did get 35,000 $ in donations using that kick-starter website.

Yeah but they are in production of a game around the time of Starbound. It would be bad for Starbound's business if they took some customers away by fixing things people don't like about Starbound. Of course, Torchlight is similar in that fashion, but the dungeon crawler is a genre. Just like Mindcraft and Terraria are kinda in their own genre.

It just looks less polished than Starbound (less fluid animations, rather low-res textures), but I DO like EoS' art style - it looks less cartoon-ish than SB, and this, in my opinion, is better.

I suppose people here just want everything look like a Pokemon anime.

Well when I watched videos of EoS it looked like complete s**t. Really they showed nothing intresting.... Starbound forest video of them running around the forest is way more interesting that anything i saw from EoS I wont buy EoS it looks s**t(BEFORE INSULTING ME YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION).

AND PLEASE NO MORE THREADS LIKE THIS you guys are just advertising potential rivals to starbound....

Sure Starbound is slightly cartoon-ish, but what's wrong with that? If I'm going to play a game that has non-cartoon-ish stuff, I want it to be REALLY good. Edge of space just doesn't live up to that standard. Yes, it's cool they made a non-cartoon 2d sidescroller game... But at the same time, they didn't do it too well so it looks a bit ugly.

The way I found out about starbound was when I was looking up edge of space, then I told myself "this game looks terrible."
Then I went to the comments and someone posted a link to starbound, so I checked it out.
And now I can hardly wait for Starbound. :)

Well, some people - people like me - have different tastes regarding visual art. I will bear with current art directions, sure, but I would be way happier if SB's art style would be, for the lack of better words, grittier.

Still, when you have low resolution, the best you can do is cartoon. If you try doing something realistic, with a low resolution, it ends up looking bad.

  20. See, I don't think it's about resolution at all. I just think the devs are going for a certain aesthetic, and that this is it. It doesn't look like "pokemon anime," whatever that means; pixel graphics existed way before the creator of pokemon started inventing improbable pet monsters.

I mean, criticizing the graphics of this game (which, in my mind are very deliberate) is like watching something made by Joss Whedon and saying "man, I mean, it's alright, I just wish the dialogue wasn't so quippy; it's not realistic." In both cases, if these words escape your lips, you have succeeded in missing the point.

    Furthermore...
    Competition makes everything better, comrade.
