Starbound knock-offs?

personally ive always wanted to know why people were hating him so hard. for me it was like walking in a small town with people beating each other saying the other is bad but i have no f***ing clue as to why.
as for fan wars, its inevitable and part of human's nature, its often just a scaled down version of why people do wars and kill others.
they want to defend what they believe in, and admitting that what they believe in is flawed would be a spiritual defeat, and therefore unacceptable. people are narrow-minded and uncompromising when defending something they like most of the time.
sometime its the other side too who is just instilling a self-reinforcing cycle. they passively bash the other because they are insecure of theire position, then the other side hates them for this behavior which makes the other mad and so forth.

even as i write those words of wisdom i must admit that i somehow like bashing edge of space because i dont like the game for all sort of reasons, its just natural.
hell, even if they might not admit it openly, even the goody-sayers in this thread could prove guilty of this in some form. (goody-sayers is used here as wrap around term for people "preaching" against fan wars, no offense meant)

it might sound like a conspiracy sometime, we so dont want to look/sound narrow-minded that we will try preaching that this or that isint what most people make it look like even tho it might actually be.

[warning : the following is purely hypothetical for the sake of example]
Hell, we might be missing some info here, maybe that when terraria spritiually expired and that tiy built a team to create starbound and then revealed it later, someone wanted to capitalize on the idea and made up edge of space to do just that.
Conspiracy adepts might interpret edge of space hasty beginnings on kickstarter as a quick set-up to catch-up with starbound and the fact it reuses some of terrarias assets/engine as another way to quickly make up for "being late" behind starbound.

no closing words here, people simply are passionate, and create theyre own reality/understanding based on what they see, learn and hear and "knockoff" is a wide term just like "balance" and "cheap" are used in other games.
my "created reality" is this one : i feel like edge of space is project hastily putted up to tap on starbound's popularity/potential

Wait. EOS is using Terraria Assets/engine? Isn't that illegal, or did they get permission?

Now that is true, what they have done in previous games, does matter (at least it should) for example the a draconian DRM system that only allows you to instal the game like 2-3 times (Cough.. Spore... Cough heh). But I meant on a personal level, of I dislike that guy cause he is a jerk or he did X in the past.. Some people may use that as an example why not to buy his game, and (IMO) I think they are missing out because that has nothing to do with the game itself.

Now DRM's.. (Let the rant... Begin!!) I agree those are Evil. They say they are to stop "Piracy" but really it doesn't. But they keep paying more and more for this stuff, and all it does is keep inconveniencing end users more and more. Its like a vicious cycle, but the problem is the whole "Intellectual Property" state that games are in. You never own that game, even if you buy it in full you still never own it, and are only "Allowed" to play it from their standpoint. This is wrong in so many ways, but they have the law on their side so they can usually do whatever they want. Everyone seems to be jumping on the "Class Action Lawsuit prevention in the EUSA" (At&t, Valve, The playsation people.. did something like it for Playstation 3).. So as you have to start signing your rights away just to play a game.. Have fun with that. Note At&T went to the Supreme Court over this, and they decided 5-4 that they could prevent Class Action Lawsuits in the EUSA... Just to be clear. They have gone beyond protecting their own game, to "Punishing" people who just want to play it..

That is why I like Indie games so much. They don't have the "Big-Time" lawyers to do all this bogus stuff the large companies can. It makes evens the playing field making them a bit more honest bout it, and I think the whole "Game Maker Community" needs something like this cause it has all gone way to far. I truly hope Starbound doesn't have a DRM at all.. It has been shown that a game will be "Taken" with or without a DRM, and games without them do as well or better then games with them anymore.
    /rant

Edit: I realize they are prob going to have some kind of DRM, and as long as it is "Non-Intrusive" I really don't have a problem with it, but I really don't think it is necessary, as any DRM like this is only really going to stop only the very lazy or people just discovering the internet.

And just remember "E.A. games.... Ruins Eeeverything" :p

to be taken with a grain of small, there was a warning that the following content might not be entirely accurate. i can confirm i saw someone mention this on a thread on this forum, but since i cant verify it myself, its to be considered hypothetical. dont forget the whole paragraph is mostly a figure of style to give an example that Edge of space or other similar game can be knockoff and that the possibility shouldnt be pushed aside under the banner of narrow-mindness

To further your point, there's no way to stop a hacker or a pirate if they really want to pirate the game. Given time, all DRM's are broken. Sometimes it's a day, sometimes a week, sometimes a month even. All Pokemon games have anti-piracy measures, Yet they get broken within the first hour of the initial ROM dump. DRM is more or less entirely useless.

I have heard.. though I don't know if this is true.. that what they are looking for is a week without piracy, they consider that a "Win" and move on. They don't take out the DRM at that point.. Heck some games never turn it off, even after the thing is so old no-one wants to play it anymore. To be fair, some do, or at least lessen it a lot (EA for example after the only people who could play SPORE/Assassins Creed/etc were using a pirated version.. now that is messed up)

Edit: The top worst companies IMO EA (#1), Ubisoft, Capcom.. those are the worst of all the offenders.

Oh yeah, its hilarious, they spend THOUSANDS developing super insane DRM to stop people from pirating the game, then there are cracks for it in under an hour.

I really don't have a stance on piracy, because no matter what the companies do the issue will still exist, so I only hate the people who hurt me the most, those people being the corporations who design DRM so intrusive I can't start up my game without bending over backwards so far I can lick my heels.

Ya know I use to flat out, for sure be against piracy. I mean the people would put a lot of hard work into it, and they deserved to get paid for it. And I still think there is no reason to Pirate Indie games (Come on... these are hard working independent people just trying to make it ya know). But after DRM's like always on connection, or limited instals, or malware that searches your computer for other files (It existed, but I think they got sued for that one), or just plain crappy games they hype to try to get people to pre-order just so they can get their money and get out (not to mention the money they cost.. $60 for a game that is an hour long, that is like $1 a min.. I rather just call a 900 number, would prob get more out of it heh :p (Kidding))... One is almost forced into Piracy anymore.

I still don't like it, I mean I understand these people need to get paid, as they have put a lot of hard work into it, but I am not going to be punished because of what some other people are just going to work around. I still think if you like the game you should buy it (Unless it is something like spore.. No-one should buy that game.. what were they thinking.. 3 installs.. *Headshakes*), but I also believe is there is some kind of restriction that they try to force on you (Other then something reasonable.. Like "Log-In" and there ya go.. or if anyone remembers.. Cd-Keys? heh) that you are not to blame for downloading some crack, or even maybe... Maaaybe the game and try it out to see if you like it before purchasing (or maybe because it is the only way to get past some super stupid DRM). I hate to say that.. I really do, but it has gotten to the point that if you want to play a game you have to swear your life away, and the only other option is just not play it.

I understand that camp don't get me wrong.. "What if you don't like the DRM, don't buy the game", but I am willing to pay for these games, I just don't want to be screwed by the gaming company... Again.

Edit: There are people who will pirate a game just because they can, and they never pay a dime to any developer ever... Evaaar :p. I don't agree with this nor do I condone this. This is just wrong, and greedy but that is just IMO. But if your boycotting (Lets say EA for example) and you try out the game piracy wise.. why not send the developers like a note with some money? Don't say why.. cause you could be held liable, but just tell them to eat a nice dinner, thanks for the game. (I have actually done this before lol.. Got a letter back saying thanks lol.. but it wasn't because I pirated the game ;) cause that would of been legally wrong heh)

Came top this board to catch up on news a bit and saw this thread. Really a bad impression of this community I must say reading this. The pettiness of this and threads like it blows my mind.

We're gamers. If someone makes a good game we will play it. If it sucks we won't. Claiming a game is ripping off Starbound is beyond silly. Especially since about 99% of us are here because we loved Terraria. Newsflash: this game doesn't define your life, or the video game universe. WE aren't a "team". We're consumers wanting to play awesome games. The more the better. Some of the best games ever made are knockoffs and revisions of other games. Everyone has their own style and plan for their game. IF they can realize it and make a good game that's good news.

I am sorry you feel that way. I am going to just assume this is a troll(ish) comment and skip the long explanation of why a community isn't a couple people who think a specific way, or how they have the right to express their opinions as much as you do, and skip to the actual part of the post I agree with heh.. :iswydt:

I kinda of agree with ya here, and although we are not a "team" we are a group.. a group as you said of consumers. And if you want to sell the game it is best to keep that in mind. I am not saying the "Rip-off" people are right nor that we should cater to them, just that consumers as a whole are something you should keep in mind during development not to be pushed off as "There will always be more". I think this is one of the problems of the large companies we talked about, but the rest of the post I do agree with (other then the first line of course)

  12. Why, when someone says something like this, is there always a person who calls it trolling. You can't really say that "everyone has the right to express their opinions" and then dismiss NoGod's opinion as trolling.

  13. TheRev

    TheRev Industrial Terraformer

umm.. I didn't actually dismiss his opinion, if you look at the rest of the post, I actually respond to it, and not only that I agree with most of it. NoGod could of made their whole opinion without this comment there was no relevance other then what it looked like (To me) as inflammatory.. So that's why I said what I did.

Lastly I do believe that everyone has the right to express their opinion, and true saying something inflammatory, and even trolling is an opinion, but there is no reason to go there to express what you think, and you are "dismissed" as you are only trying to start an argument... Not discussing your opinion.

  14. I think that's definitely true of most trolling, but I just don't think that this is an example of that. As far as I can tell, NoGod came here, and this was one of the first threads they saw, and in their mind, the thread read as petty, on the whole. That is an opinion.

The reason I come to this conclusion is the line "Newsflash: this game doesn't define your life." It's really common for people to get really defensive when they perceive something (in this case, knock-off games) as attacking or lessening, or whatever, something that they like. But NoGod is right; preference is subjective, and if someone doesn't like the same things as you, you shouldn't see that as a slight.

I mean, I just think that you're being a bit uncharitable, by attributing a motive to NoGod's opening line. You don't know that they were trying to start an argument. Maybe they were just trying to get some of the people who are saying things that might come across as petty or defensive, to stop and think a bit about what they are doing.

  15. TheRev

    TheRev Industrial Terraformer

He didn't only talk about this thread, he was talking about the community, and threads like it. I don't think they left anyone out of this vague, wide spanning inflammatory comment, and as I said I think does more to just act as an argument starter more then anything else.
Actually this is one of the points I agree with lol.. I never ment to disagree with this point, as I have been just saying similar things myself. When it comes to this I really don't see where we disagree at? I mean I even responded saying so (Though maybe I wasn't clear, or something?)

Your right I don't know for 100% sure, and as I said it was IMO. Listen I understand where you are coming from, there are a lot of places where everyone is "Glad-Handing" each other and as soon as someone comes in and says something different everyone calls them a troll and ignores them (or worse). Also, I agree with them more then I do those people who are claiming rip-off, but if someone comes in and insults everyone else talking about it, and then the whole community they are in.. that is a bit excessive. I did respond to the rest of the post (Not ignoring it because of the first line) because they moved past the negative comments into a point that was what they thought.

I am sorry, but I am on the opposite side of you on this one. True they might of not done it on purpose, but it is what it is, and I responded why I thought it was Troll(ish), and none of them were about how wrong he was, or that I disagreed with them (Totally). If someone reads this and decides not to read any of the rest of it, then that is on them. Other then that I really don't know what else I can say about it.

  16. Fair enough. I just took the "this thread and others like it" to be more focusing more on the content of particular threads, rather than at the community as a whole. Although, while I suggested that you were maybe being uncharitable, I'm probably being too charitable :).

No, you were clear. I was only citing that line as I was using as a reason why I was interpreting the person's comments that way I was.

That's true. I don't want to try and 'convert' you or anything. I think maybe I just don't like when people accuse someone of trolling, when there are so many more crystal clear examples out there. Saying they sound inflammatory or too harsh is fine, but calling them a troll just doesn't seem productive, I figure.
