    Both are different games.
I, personally, would rather test it out and then say if its good or bad.
For the time being, I have nothing bad nor good to say about it, and I wouldn't say its a rip-off.
though I admit the HERO part kinda hit me...

    Agreed.

Yeah, the whole thing is getting ridiculous, with fanboys thinking that their favourite dev-team should have some kind of monopoly on certain ideas.
As long as they don't hack into Chucklefish's computers and steal the source, but code the game themselves and put their own effort into it I'm basically fine with everything.

People, that's how stuff is created in any culture- one creator/artist/developer borrows ideas from other creators.
Terraria and soon Starbound took part in creating a new interesting genre and you should be happy that there are more games of this kind to come.
Not to mention that: more competition = highier chance of finding a product that suits you.

Yeah not seeing EOS as a rip off, in fact it looks quite unique, kind of like Starbound, or Terraria, or Minecraft.

    unique, different, not the same.

    you know, like most games.

I could not agree more. I think you pretty much nailed it, at least I can't really add anything without getting the feeling that it's already been covered.

Are you sure they were working on Starbound before they started working on Edge of space? I am just saying since they are both bassed of the idea of Terraria then who knows when they actually started developing the ideas or the code to put up on the "Kickstarter". Maybe Starbound is the "Rip-Off" (Note: I don't think either are actually a Rip-Off of Terraria or each other..)

I think those who won't look up the information or anything about the game because they think there is something they don't like can be considered a bit crazy. But not spending money on it is not only understandable but should be something everyone does. Too many people jump on these bandwagons on pre-ordering to just end up with some game they will either not be playing in a week, or that they just don't like. I am just saying that giving money something should be the last thing you do.. not the first thing you are assumed to do.

Most people seem to misinterpret rip-off, with inspiration it seems. I could go into examples into how most games are in some way just copies of other games from the past (Heck even Minecraft has been linked to Infiniminer..). That is just how the system works.. someone sees these other games.. says hey this is awesome I really liked it, but it would be better if X was added.. They then change it and it comes out so different it is literally a new game. I am not saying this is bad, this is actually a good thing, it not only brings more games out, but encourages Indie game designers to do things they find interesting for us all. Maybe if we were less picky about it, and embrassed it a little more, other interesting games would come out.

Finally... When it comes down to who's better then who.. I think Starbound has my vote, they haven't asked for money for nothing, and that is alright in my book.. Anything other then that you can only compare pictures to pictures. I guess it is wait and see which will be "Better" and even then it will prob just be up to personal opinion.

    Tl;DR..
    Too bad.. :p

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. even you with this one. I don't agree with them, and hope they see the logic behind it.. But some (Not all) just think it is the best way to show their "Loyalty" by sticking with the original (One they found first). To each their own.. that's why we have discussions.

I think Edge of Space is too similar to Starbound. Terraria has too many differences to be a rip off of Minecraft, and Starbound being too different from Terraria. Sure, there is no universal definition of what's a knock off or such, but I just see there being to much similarity and less uniqueness with Edge of Space. Age of Empires is different than Starcraft.

Perhaps if Egde of Space wasn't based on space, didn't have terraforming, and offered something different than it would be more of a different creation. If someome wants to take the time to mention similarities and differences then go ahead.

Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor: A.A. were three different games made at roughly the same time. All three had a "realistic" aesthetic, were First Person Shooters, and were set in the Second World War. The market for these games supported having three very similar appearing games. Now take a look at Starbound, Edge of Space, and lets throw CREA in there too, just to spice things up. EOS has a radically different aesthetic from the other two, both in its graphics and gameplay goal. Crea is focused on fantasy and modding. Starbound is about unlimited experience potential via procedural generation of pretty much everything.

All this to say: The gaming market can easily support more games in this genre of digging, building, exploring. I love them, and can't wait for more of them to come out. Can we please stop bashing these other games. It really makes our community look like a bunch of exclusive jerks. As gamers we should look forward to more games in the genres we enjoy, not bash them before we've had a chance to see them.

I have to disagree with ya on this one.

First I think it is way to early to start saying something is way too much like something else. All we have is the information they have given out to compare, and that is the first problem. Much of the questions about what is similar or different can only really be guessed at, but given time I am sure both will be a lot clearer. I am just going to try to point out a few things that don't seem right from what we know now.

So what they are both in space? Spore, Sins of a Solar Empire, Endless Space.. All are in space, and even some of those have terraforming . That does not mean that they "Ripped Off" Starbound (Actually since some of those were out before.. It doesn't mean Starbound "Ripped Off" them). To say they have a couple different systems that are similar so one must be "Ripped Off" is a generalization. It is like saying there are spaceships in both games, so one must of been "Ripped Off" from the other (I am not saying this is what you said, I merely mean it as an example of such generalization)

But for argument sake lets say they did look at Starbound, read that they had terraforming, and said hey thats cool lets implement that idea in our own way. There is nothing wrong with this.. Everyone wants to turn ideas into some sacred thing that shouldn't be imitated in any way, but who is to say that Starbound has the sole right to implement space and terraforming into their game? And if you think that where does it stop? Will implementing any form of Dynamic weapons always be known as "Ripping Off Starbound", like people say all digging, building, exploring games do to minecraft?

I think it is clear what is "Ripping Off", to copy code, images, sounds, or generally resources from a game and implement them as your own.. That is "Ripping Off" someone, to take an idea, and make it work (Which unless you did that above your going to have to re-write it and most likely change it to fit your own system) is as was said inspiration.

The only way to keep an idea for only yourself is not to share it, and then no-one will ever know about it so it is yours and only yours forever.

honestly i couldn't care less for EoS mostly because I dont support HERO in the slightest for reasons I wont go into as i dont like to defame people.

but ITT: a good example of a ripoff is WarZ, which is clearly ripping from DayZ in nearly every sense. guess what EoS aint doing?

  13. Ghoschief

    Ghoschief Phantasmal Quasar

I honestly can not see a huge similarity between EoS and Starbound. Besides the block based terrain I see a whole different game. I don't think the gameplay will be anything like Starbound's. It's pretty much the same as saying Starbound ripped off Terraria, in a way...
I'm not trying to defend Edge of Space, though. Personally, I think the game will not be very good. And I find Hero extremely boring :l
You do have to be fair to it though. Just because it features blocks and space does not mean it ripped those things from Starbound. Wait for the games to actually come out, and try them, before accusing them of things like that. Unless of course, it's really obvious, like how "Diggle" is an obvious ripoff of Terraria, but terrible.

You can't copyright ideas last time I checked.

Just to be clear.. this is from a release from the U.S. Copyright Office.. Note if your not from the US I am not sure how it will work.

"Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work."

To copyright it needs to be a Tangible idea.. which is a medium that can be reproduced or otherwise communicated.

Now someone seriously has to PM me what is wrong with HERO. I haven't really watched his videos but I would like to be at least an educated consumer about the guy. I mean if no one "Defamed" EA for their horrible business practices then no one would know. Knowledge is power as they say.

Does it really matter.. I mean look at Notch, I really dislike that guy for numerous reasons (It should be obvious why if you have looked into it at all, but I won't go into it). But.. He had a good idea, and implemented it well so I will give him that. The person doesn't matter, who "represents" it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is if the game is good, and that is something that is hard to tell so far. I mean you can guess from what info is available (and who knows ya might be right), but till there are actually real game play videos (etc) you can't tell for sure.

But this is off topic from the OP, so.. any other questions/comments bout copy-writes or shared ideas between games?
