Starbound isn't Terraria - so why does everyone compare the two?

Maybe because the only game worthy of comparison is Terraria. Terraria & Starbound are the only quality mentions of their kind.

i think the main issue here is that it looks the same and that the dev groups are similar.

For example, Bioware created both DragonAge and Mass effect, and untill both were out and standing on their own, while in development they were often compared to another; of course that was only until the games release, and i suspect this will be the case as well, as with DragonAge and MassEffect, both terraria and Starbound seem to have combat systems with fundamentally different abilities(blocking for example) as well as different universes in themselves, and lets not forget different sprite sizes on the screen(i have a feeling that this will be important).

I think that the Dragon Age 1 - Mass Effect 1 analogy works quite well for scope and differences of system, of course terraria and Starbound have their own goods and bads respectively but the phenomenon remains the same, and we will only truly be able to tell with the beta and the final release.

Honestly, as far as we can tell, they really are quite similar games.
Pixel graphics, 2D, mining, procedural generation, monster combat, resources, tile based building, sandbox adventuring..
How different they really are will only be obvious as we play the game. Be a double's advocate and try to see both sides.

  4. This is all true. When people compare the two games, there is no reason to get upset, because terraria was great. Someone else said in the other thread like this, that it's just human nature to make comparisons based on similal features or traits. I mean, I don't think CoD is the same as BF3, but if a friend asked how one was, I would use my knowledge of their experiences to make a helpful comparison.

Anyone who would hear me say that and respond with "no way. They aren't exactly alike" is both not thinking critically, and treating me like I'm an idiot.

I don't mean to be that girl, but the expression is "play devil's advocate".

I'm not sure if this was a joke, but I was going to say the same thing.
    Terraria is a great game.
    Starbound will be even better.
That's why people compare them (at least, until they realize how much better Starbound is/will be)

No I was serious. Terraria was awesome & I spent tons of hours playing it. When it comes to Starbound there truly is nothing else to compare it to other than Terraria. With that said I believe Starbound is going to make Terraria look like childs play. Which is a good thing actually because many fans of Terraria wanted so much more out of it & realized the possibilities of a game like this. Then Terraria gets abandoned, Tiy branches off, & puts together his own team to create Starbound. I am so grateful for these series of events because we fans are going to get one hell of a game. When I first set my eyes on the "list of announced game information" I was blown away.

Redigit advertised the game, for one. They're in a VERY similar genre, for two. (Procedurally generated side scrolling platformer.) For three, their graphical styles are vaguely similar. (A retro feel to them.) And for four, a member of Terraria's team is working on it.
Any sane man would look at this and say "Oh, it's like Terraria!" In a similar manner, one might look at Age of Empires and say "It's like StarCraft!"
Comparison of the game is not a bad thing. It's not ignorant, either. It's utilizing one's knowledge of another similar creation to assist in defining another.
However, that's no excuse for assuming things such as "StarBound is a sequel to Terraria!" or saying "If you have Terraria, don't bother buying StarBound." The first shows severe lack of understanding in the game creation's background, the second shows lack of understanding in the differences between the two.
Main point? They've got more than a few differences, sure. But at each of their cores, StarBound and Terraria are quite similar and certainly comparable. I, actually, find it quite surprising that some seem to be puzzled as to why they're being compared, and even more surprised to see some say they SHOULDN'T be compared.

I like my version better, but you're right.

Another point I'd like to make is that Terraria was and is an awesome game, if this game can meet and surpass, let people think what they want.

everything i have seen so far looks like that starbound is gonna be terraria 2.0
(tuned combat /lightning etc/ more randomness)

iam fine with that ;) .. cause terraria was great fun ... even if i wish they should insert some new bosses into the game ;)
(how long do you need to do so 1 week 1 boss ?... if you cant do it way way faster ... it would be totally awesome if the decide to do so ;) )

all i hope is that re logic takes much more care about the starbound game (aka more bosses + end content via patches ;) ).. then iam fine with it
if they decide to go the easy way again (same bosses just hard versions) than iam really mad ;)

last but not least GO GO GO I WANNA PLAY THIS GAME i even bought wanderlust to support you guys :)

For me, a big part of it is that since Terraria's development has stopped, those who play it feel a little... orphaned. What I mean to say is that Terraria had a certain playstyle, aesthetic, and group dynamic that made it -incredibly- fun. So, when updates stopped coming and we all had wings and harps and whathaveyou, we naturally started to look for something else that would soothe that itch.

Starbound is, by and large, the clearest contender for that spot, no matter the intention, and that's definitely not a bad thing.

I try really hard not to be bitter about the whole Terraria thing, but I sincerely hope that Starbound doesn't do the same thing. It looks too good and has way too much potential to leave us hanging a year or two down the line.

My guess as to why so many people compare the two, is that Terraria is one of the most well-known 2d sandbox games, and Starbound is looking to be an amazing 2d sandbox game.
Or, in a few peoples cases, it is simply because they are both 2d side-scrolling games (I have seen people compare games like Super Mario World to Terraria for that reason, even though they are ntohing alike.)
Some people just overly generalize games I guess.

@ britefire .. look @ the videos on the main page .. come on it IS terraria 2.0

as i said before this isnt a bad thing 4 me ... as long they take much more care about the game on the long run

my ass it is terraria 2.0 you can't just call a other game a 2.0 version of the game. just cause it is sandboxed and it has some things of terraria doesnt mean it's 2.0 why don't you understand :fireball: you can't call terraria minecraft 2.0 with monsters either get the idea D:

It's just the terrarian community i guess. we all know that maybe 75-80% (probably wrong but oh well) of the community came from the terraria community. i can understand them comparing terraria to this game but what i cant understand that people being aggressive to each others community(the 1st reason why i was confused that the terraria community would be arguing to the other bit of itself which is part of the starbound community(like a terrarian-starbound community))

Heads up, NEVER make the mistake here that Re-Logic is a part of Starbound. No one takes it lightly and you can expect aggressive reactions.
The developer team creating Starbound is called Chucklefish. Not Re-Logic. Not the same team, not the same people, not the same game. They are completely independent.

oh my mistake ... :poo: ... sorry 4 that fanboys and chucklefish :)
awesome :) .. i think i can expect better support then xD

never the less i havent been this pumped for a game since carmageddon reincarnation announcement (pure nostalgia in next gen clothes xD) ... really cant wait to play starbound

(then i must say i really hope it plays like massive tuned terraria and not completely different ... cause the vids look like this to me and i REALLY hope starbound delivers me that gameing experience ;) )
