no, the money is to get the quest to fight the boss.

    think about that.

Ah, I misunderstood then. Still, you could just give yourself the items need to progress with a mod if you didn't want to go with the tier system.

To be clear, I do have a bit of a slight issue with bosses being required, but I have that same slight issue with that in both Terraria as well and I get the impression that most other people are fine with that (though perhaps not?).

On the other hand, pixels/money I can understand. Sure it's *groan* money, but like I mentioned earlier money doesn't care where you get it from or where you fight it very much.

shouldent have to mod a game to make it playable, especially when we are talking functionality the promotional material says we'd be getting.
only having to fight 4 out of i dont even know how many bosses (wassit, like 10, not counting hardmode?) furthermore, in terreria, you can fight most of the bosses in any order you please. the indication from tiy is that "for story reasons" you will always fight the same bosses in the same order.

It's not about ppl fine about Terraria bosses or not. It's about Terraria being is all about fighting and gearing up, so bosses with gear reward are natural form of progression, while in SB where Devs especially made a lot of alternative routes besides fighting and still placing bosses at choke points forcing ppl to fight them for the sake of some "storytelling".

"In the finished game you’ll be able to earn pixels in a multitude of different ways, essentially allowing you to play through the game the way you want to play. If you’d like to become an intergalactic farmer, growing and selling crops, keeping livestock and so on. The farming feature will be fleshed out enough for that to be your means of pixel gathering. On the other hand, if you prefer to be an adventurer, taking quests and gaining pixels as rewards. That route is just as good. Perhaps you prefer to be a builder, charging npcs rent based on the quality of the homes they inhabit. A pirate, robbing towns and ransacking villages. A tomb raider, gathering rare artifacts."

Will be more than one route to get money, as stated by Tiy, not just Quests/Bosses.

EDIT: Nope it appears you still have to buy the boss quest regardless of how you got your pixels.

close, but no. there is more than one route to get the money, to buy the quest that leads you to the boss. you will still have to fight the boss, no matter what. even if you want to play a "civilian" lifestyle, you will still need to fight bosses to progress.

i suggest you read the transcripts of the AMA, this is all covered in there, and why i and others are upset.

Hah, I opened a much less angry and aggressive thread about them steering away from Open World to Set In Stone... and all the fanboys immediately jumped down my throat saying, "IT WAS NEVER STATED THIS WOULD EVER BE SOMETHING REMOTELY OPEN WORLDZORS!!!!!!!!!!! IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!"

Why did the same thing not happen to the clearly deranged OP? lol

I'm with you on this one. I still don't get what all the fuss is about really... We've already covered the fact that "open world" and "sandbox" are appropriate classifications for this game. There is no false advertisement or anything like it. Of course, as has been stated earlier in this thread, there is a subjective continuum that is merely personal preference. Even the TES games (for example) don't give you all the skills and equip up front, so why aren't people up in arms about that? The OP seems like just a rant to me.

Another thing that may be worth pointing out is that a player that does not wish to fight "bosses" might just opt to stay in alpha then? I mean, it's a big place with plenty of room to explore and build/farm or whatever. So what if they can't go to beta w/o fighting a boss... I don't know maybe I'm just not hip to the scene, but it seems a pretty shallow argument.

And I'm sure nobody that wants a more open progression format actually mentioned wanting all the skills and equip up front.

being able to use better materials requires you to tier up. staying in alpha locks you to just 1/10th the available content in the game.

Actually, I wouldn't doubt there were a couple people that wanted everything up front with no effort in having to get anything. Though with Skyrim and also Fallout, they have more of the issues with areas blocked off with things like overly steep mountains/invisible walls.

Alpha Sector doesn't include everything though. There are various items, weapons, and biomes that cannot be obtained/reached until the further sectors.

bethesda post-morrowind has rushed every game out incomplete. it is because of this and the wonderful modding community over there, dedicated to finishing and fixing their games, that the idea seems to have taken hold that "it's ok to release incomplete and buggy games... the modders will fix it!"

Actually, Bethesda games have always been buggy, so have the GTA games, and others. I also wouldn't really call Skyrim incomplete, granted they don't nearly have as much stuff as some of the older games due to audio for voices/graphics taking away from how much they could add to the game (that mainly has to do with making the game playable for a large consumer group).
