Starbound Isn't Playing In The Sandbox!

    I have great idea for everyone here...Why not scatter all the parts or requirements needed for the players to build/craft a boss spawn across the same sector this way players would have to go in search of it in the current sector..until he is able to find all parts or recipes to craft boss spawn . I'm pretty sure player would have dug/explored/blasted/killed many through the same sector in-order to get there...:laugh:

    I see your issue and I understand that starbound is a sandbox game or said to be a sandbox game. I like your ideas of giving good gear by completing quests and dungeons.
    I can also agree that the ore on the top can make it more like surface graze every planet you come across. I think it would be cool that if in the later tiers of the game you have to dig to get the ores you need while keeping copper, coal and iron close to the surface.
    But that is still no reason to dis Starbound completely.... I mean its still in its first phase of the beta.

    I compiled my ideas, but am thinking of posting them (or working with one of the delightful folks I've been chatting with here) to post them as a separate thread.

    • Pixel Gates: You pay pixels to unlock more stuff.
    • Create Gates: You unlock teirs by creating specific pieces of equipment. This may require anything from mining to farming.
    • Search Gate: Each gate is unlocked with a specific mission.
    • Treasure Hunt: Various pieces come together to make equipment/summon bosses and you have to find them (A bit familiar, but)
    • Tech Tree: Manufacturing certain items/finding certain items unlocks new things that in turn unlocks new content. Of course you have to do certain things/go certain places.
    • Boss Beater: Go old school, have to kill a boss to unlock a teir.
    • MultiGate: Each teir has 2 or more ways to unlock it - pay pixels or find an artifact, make a gizmo or fight a boss, etc. Fits with most of the above gates.
    • Warning Signs: The universe is all teirs at once, but missions and worlds have clear warnings of limits and what you need (and what they have) so you can navigate. Works well with Tech Tree and Treasure Hunt - and most anything else.
    • Cluster Buster: Worlds are spawned in clusters of difficulty, and thus you can be assured that A) the worlds you're in are safe when you start, :cool: you can get a pretty good idea of how the rest of the universe will kill you. Fits with "Warning Signs"

    You know this thread started hairy, but it made some good designs. I've actually pointed at Chucklefish (and Wildstar's) methods of fan engagement as an example for others to emulate.

    So you want to take away the tiers?
    How fun would it be to go straight to sector x and mine all the perfect ore and beat the game in an hour?
    That is not even a game.

    Starbound is not defined by its gameplay, presentability, nor its linearity.

    i dont think anyone wants that. it is confirmed that all tiers will be on the same starmap anyway. what seems to be desired is more than one way to progress through the tiers than "collect pixels, unlock boss mission, beat boss"

    The way you formatted that text is just awful. I had to paste it into Wordpad to read it.

    Anyway, the restrictions on sectors exist to keep new players from getting insta-killed and raging. It's not really dampening the sandbox.
